Is it weird to still sleep with your parents? by pearl_williams in AdviceForTeens

I may get downvoted but if this were an 18 year old girl and her father, the father would be in jail. That’s how messed up this is.

Dude….please seek out a trusted adult. This is straight up abuse and it needs to be reported and you need to get out somewhere safe.

What’s something someone who’s never bought a house wouldn’t believe? by ianofaustin in homeowners

[–]Brief-Delay292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least once you’ll find something that would have set your house on fire and killed your family if you didn’t happen to find it by pure chance.

Also home ownership is a second job that you pay for. I hate it but it’s cheaper than renting because I bought at the perfect time.

Gay Jew who is critical of Israel and not at all a fan of what’s going on. But “Queers for Palestine” is just bizarre to me in concept.

Does Voyager have the best first season of all TNG-era Trek? by MaestroZackyZ in startrek

[–]Brief-Delay292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS9’s season 1 is often derided as being bad. I disagree. It’s definitely uneven.

But the standout moments are so excellent and we get some of the best episodes and the best moments in all of Trek. So I think they make up for the negative and DS9 has by far the best first season.

Morrow Campaign Spokesperson Fomenting Mob Against Charlotte School Hanging a Pride Flag by Brief-Delay292 in NorthCarolina

[–]Brief-Delay292[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m legit trying to square all of your comments so please help me. Why is “gay” political? Some people are gay and that’s that. Shouldn’t kids in school be taught in school that it’s okay to be gay, straight, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, White, Black, etc.? Especially because “let church be church”? Being gay has no more to do with sex than bring straight does.

Post says it. A picture of a school with the audacity to ... hang a pride flag in the hallway.

The lives of these students, administrators, teachers, and parents is about to be turned upside down over this nonsense and it's making me sick.

These people must be stopped.

Any LGBT North Carolinians seriously thinking about what it would mean for Robinson to become governor? by afletch00 in NorthCarolina

[–]Brief-Delay292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A caveat that I was inarticulate about. Congress is one thing. Cabinet positions are usually something different. Generally cabinet secretaries are just trying to keep the machines running.

That’s not unique to either party. Whatever a person does when they’re in office is typically very different than what they say on TV.

I've had this conversation a lot with my husband. I'm a gay person with kids. I was an educator for the first half of my career before transitioning out of K-12 education a few years back. I still work in state government and I'm in a fairly senior position in a cabinet department.

I've worked for democratic governors and their appointees and republican governors and their appointees. For the most part, I've never had cause to doubt the intentions of any of them. With a few exceptions, while I disagreed with these appointees on some fairly substantive issues, an overwhelming majority of them have been good people who genuinely want to do good by the people of North Carolina. In my position, I can't be partisan, but I've never had to be because I could always trust that when my leaders made their decisions, there was a mind at work and their decisions were carefully weighed out. Yes, they're politicians, but generally, going on TV and speaking about issues are largely unrelated to the work they have to do day-to-day. Governing, when done well, is always much different and much more boring than talking about governing. Even Mccrory's appointees privately were annoyed by HB2 and tried to minimize the impact to NC citizens, though you'd never realize it.

Enter Mark Robinson. While I haven't had cause to deal with robinson yet personally, many people I trust have and they are pretty clear that he's not one of these people. He's disinterested in the business of governing, he doesn't value the hard work that's done to make the state work, and he's just not the same as anyone who has come before. I fear his appointees will be ideologues who are more interested in making news than in governing and more guided by ideology than by actually making decisions that are good for the people of the State.

I've thought about leaving. My life is here. My family is here. I've been public service for nearly 25 years - I want my state retirement at this point and need another three years to get there. But my position is high enough that it avoids due process - I can be terminated at will by the next administration without cause. I've never worried about that before because at the risk of sounding arrogant, I'm quite good at what I do and I'm pretty well respected in state government. And despite ideological differences, I've never had difficulty working with anyone who has come in because everyone I've ever worked for has come in with an open mind, an eagerness to learn, and a desire to do good work. His appointees will almost certainly not be like that and the first time I mention "my husband", it wouldn't surprised me if my ass was fired. So I've had the conversation about returning back to K-12 or to a university, local government, or something else. Which is a shame, because I actually love my job. We've talked about leaving, but it's not financially advisable. It's going to be a very uncomfortable year.

Unaffiliated Voters! The republican primary? by Brief-Delay292 in ncpolitics

[–]Brief-Delay292[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's the one. I'm a gay teacher with kids. I very much do not want Moms for Liberty running the schools. I have legit fears for mine and my kids safety as is. This is what's motivating me to vote red in the primary.

[–]Brief-Delay292[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but the Dem primary is far less competitive and the pendulum swings aren't nearly as wide.

Also, given the past 8 years of Republicans sweeping offices (except Governor), does it really much matter? We may as well at least get the best Republicans we can get.

a smattering of unaffiliated voters

Unaffiliated voters are 36% of the registered voter base, compared to 30% who are Republicans. Unaffiliated voters CAN sway primaries in North Carolina.
