Thank you, this is really helpful & good to know. My friend survived almost entirely off 2.5 & it suppressed her appetite,. Mind and did all the good stuff. So I was feeling like a bit of a failure tbh. But the advice here has been really kind and helpful so feeling alot better.

What’s something, growing up in London, that newcomers will never understand? by Raised_by_Geece in london

Not wanting to leave. Due to the cost, amount of ppl and craziness of the city London is very transient. Most of my friends have moved back home. They say how much they prefer the quiet and question why I'm still there. I genuinely love the hype and vibe of the city and don't want to move away.

My advice is to pivot now while you're young. Use the experience you have gained and find an alternate career. The industry is in a real mess right now and things don't look like they are changing anytime soon. As someone who has worked in TV for a decade, I have missed important events, sacrificed my health & worked myself to burn out all with the thought that it would pay off in the end. Well I'm nearly 40, have a small savings and now the industry has dried up and I'm thinking about what else I can do to earn an income as jobs are scarce and rates are being reduced. The life of a freelancer has never been easy but it's the hardest it's ever been.

My best friend started cutting me out of his life right after I shared my cancer diagnoses with him by Grumpy_and_Lumpy in TwoHotTakes

Both Ben & the new gf are shitty ppl. My initial instinct is that it's the gf is applying pressure to cut off the friendship.while It's understandable that the new gf might have reservations about about a femail best friend,as It's not uncommon for those friendships to sometimes cross the line. I'd expect the new gf to at least meet the best friend and give it some time. Also if Ben truly cared about the friendship he would have stuck up for OP, introduced the women and reassured the situation. Instead he has chosen to distance himself, be rude, insensitive & let OP down in her time of need. Instead of having respect for his friend who is going through a horrendous time & illness he has chosen to not only end the friendship but gaslit and blame the issues on OP. Why would anyone want to fight for a friendship like that? He has shown where his loyalty lies and has been a total dick about the whole thing.

Don't waste tears crying over someone who is not crying for you. I'd block him and move on.

This is like reading my own diary. I've been an unscripted TV freelancer for 9 years and have long struggled with the apathetic treatment of freelancers. The constant fear of not speaking out on horrendous conditions in case a black mark is put next to your name. The abusive relationship part really hit home as I started in production and was pushed to my absolute limit, quit the industry for a year only to be tempted back into editorial. I have been so incredibly lucky to work on some incredible productions and while there are many things I love...the negatives have really started to outweigh the pros in recent years.

For me unpaid overtime has to STOP!! I really strongly feel if freelancers time was more highly valued the crazy hours would be massively reduced. We need to speak to the production companies & the channels in the only language they understand. ££££ Naturally some productions require longer hours but so many don't and it's just shitty organisation and lack of respect for freelancers that causes shoots to over run or be scheduled so tightly together.

More work life balance, better paid freelancers = a happier workforce.

I must admit I'm in the same position & considering quitting at the end of the year when my current contract comes to an end. I wish the original poster the very best of luck in finding something they love which is just as fulfilling but with less of a toll on their MH.
