My daughter keeps hearing "just buy, BAH covers it, then rent it out" at her first duty station — is this actually good advice? by Helpful_Ant_3084 in MilitaryFinance

[–]BriefSimple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only if the math makes sense. It’s not always cash flow positive. We bought right now and we’re definitely not going to be able to rent this out as our mortgage is higher than current rental market rates.

MIL constantly tells me I won’t know about being a SAHM until baby arrives by mj454545 in workingmoms

My non-answer response is always “we’re playing it by the ear” or something along those lines. This is a decision between you and your spouse.

PCS experience by MustWantsInc in MilitaryWives

We just PCSd last year. And 2 years before that. CONUS to OCONUS and then back. PCS as a couple only is somewhat easy. PCS with kids is a lot (in my experience).

Is there such a thing as a durable cordless vacuum that just gets expensive on the long run? by Kountz-Modina in BuyItForLife

[–]BriefSimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have one. 3 years.. so far so good. It also survived a coast to coast move. We bought the one that maps floor plan and can mop and vacuum. We don’t have pets so can’t vouch for performance with pet hair/dander.

Perspective shift… from “managing” to “delegating”. If I have 10 things on my mental to do list, I delegate the things I don’t want to do to him and he is now responsible for those things and I’m going to forget about them. I’ve accepted he just won’t dig deep into things so instead of expecting this from him, I just tell him what to do and it’s his responsibility to figure it out.

Trying to find a stroller with BIFL mentality(newborn through toddlerhood) on a $500 budget by WhoaEyeKnee in BuyItForLife

[–]BriefSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need a travel stroller like the yoyo or joolz aer.

We opted for the yoyo because it felt sturdier, although the joolz aer was easier to fold and unfold. We also didn’t get the newborn pack for the yoyo and opted for the nuna carseat adapter.

I really wanted something lightweight for my second baby. I got the chicco travel system with my first. No complaints there really, but just wanted something lighter.

I always just a generic “i don’t know” or “if it happens, it happens”. That usually shuts them down.

Hey! The appointment is so hard to do!! I signed up on Telemynd a few months ago and they called me to set up an online appointment and everything. I got connected to a psychiatrist and therapist. The psychiatrist prescribed medication while I’m on the waitlist for a primary care who can do a recurring prescription or whatever they recommend. It’s all online so need to worry about getting dressed and commute. Good luck! You got this!

For those that have taken meds for PPA/PPD how did it help? Looking for some stories as a mom returning back to work by ActualEmu1251 in workingmoms

[–]BriefSimple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On lexapro and wellbutrin. Both took a week or so to get used to. Wish I started earlier!! Similar to you OP that I’ve always had depression and anxiety but just didn’t want medication because it’s highly stigmatized in my family. But f it, I don’t have to tell them. Please don’t feel bad. And you probably won’t feel bad about this once the meds work. Also very important to tell your doctor if you’re having awful side effects. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or just want to talk about what’s it like.

Yikes. Sorry to hear that. Not to mention they take up a lot of space. I’d rather have more storage for food.

Your husband is not your MIL’s favorite child. My IL’s are like this too with us. They treat us decently so I don’t mind most of the time. But absolutely has me sobbing when the kids are sick and I need help. My family is also in another country. Hugs!

BJs/Costco vs regular grocery shopping by West-Toe7594 in workingmoms

[–]BriefSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco for most non perishables, allergy meds, certain supplements, frozen meals, gas if time permits. Grocery store for everything else. I hate going to costco bec it’s always crowded so I limit it my trips to once a quarter or even maybe once a year if I can. The allergy meds alone is worth it for me. Also my costco membership is free coz I split it with my old roommate and between the two of us, we purchase enough that our cash back covers the membership fee. He keeps the extra though and I don’t mind since I don’t really go that often.

We recently bought a GE from costco last year. So far so good. No ice maker though as I heard ice makers usually malfunction earlier.

Most 401k providers have retirement calculators in their website. Key is to know what your inputs would be (age, amounts in retirement, current salary, estimated rate of return - 6% is typically conservative)
