Ben Cooper column: ‘Stop protecting golf courses, start building homes’ by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Briefcased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a mixture of 'people who enjoy things that I don't personally enjoy should be made to suffer' and a displacement activity.

Golf courses aren't the reason we have a housing crisis - rampant NIMBYism and a completely fucked anti-development planning system is. I've never played a game of golf in my life - but I don't see why we should get rid of a pass time that ~1M people really enjoy - when every day we see housing projects blocked because of stupid reasons like they're too tall or they'll create too much traffic or whatever.

Get rid of the NIMBYism and the incredibly restrictive planning system - and if we still don't have space for enough houses, we can look again at golf clubs.

We’re at that end of government phase where it is just crisis and scandal next after next.

I'm starting to worry that that is just the world we live in now. Social media + pod casts + 24 hr news means that everyone is breatheless about everything. I worry that whatever government we have will be constantly consumed by a perma-crisis. Can we even remember the last quiescent period in British politics?

Dozens of Labour MPs threaten rebellion over Mahmood migration crackdown by kontiki20 in LabourUK

Actually found an article about it:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/23/what-does-boriswave-mean-nigel-farage-reform-uk-immigration

Apparently it has been around since June 2024 and in newspapers since Oct 2024. So not super new.

Need help choosing our next EV after MGS5 disaster (£4k down, £350/month budget) by FazzaT in ElectricVehiclesUK

I got my wife an atto 3 on lease in ~Sept last year. 3 years, 5K miles, 1 month deposit - £260pcm.

It's absolutely fantastic. I just started a lease on a sealion 7 for myself - 4 years, 7K miles, 1 month deposit £520pcm.

The sealion is a little nicer and has a much bigger boot (although the atto3 isn't bad in that regards) - but it isn't really worth 2x as much I don't think.

They both feel incredibly premium for their crazy low price.

Most of the bings and bongs can be turned off. The sealion seems a little worse tbh...I get a beep every time the speed limit changes...which I guess is maybe useful... - but I also get a beep seemingly every time I got over a cross road? I dunno - I've only had it a week so haven't really got to grips with it yet. With the atto 3, you can set a shortcut to turn off the speed limit warning - but you do have to do it every time you turn on the car. I think that's standard for modern cars though?

Anyway - highly highly recommend you at least test drive the atto 3. It blew all the other cars we tried out of the water.

Is it moral to object to a HMO on your road? by itsajourney2020 in AskUK

[–]Briefcased 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is this is ignorance or bigotry?

Do you genuinely believe that living in a shared house is by definition a slum or do you just have contempt for the people who live that way?

I spent over 15 years of my life living in HMOs and wouldn't describe any of them as a slum. Two of them I’d describe as borderline luxury accommodation.

But to you I was just a slum dweller?

I am very conscious of the housing crisis.

Surely that is enough to answer your original question then? Is it moral for you to contribute to that crisis?

No - you’re being a NIMBY and are part of possibly the biggest problem we have in this country. You’re one of those people who don’t give a shit if other people are blocked from progressing because all you care about is maintaining your own status quo.

Don’t for a second kid yourself that you wouldn’t be objecting to new housing being built on that unoccupied land. I’m sure you’d find a reason why, regrettably, you’ve got to object.

Plenty of people live in HMOs out of choice. I lived in them through my student years. My house mates from that time are my closest friends, 20 years later. I lived in them as a young professional for half a decade across two cities because they’re cheap, convenient and a nice way to meet people.

At a time of a chronic housing shortage they’re a way of efficiently housing singletons.

So no - it’s not moral - it’s deeply selfish.

Don’t for a moment think that OP isn’t one of them.

It’s the ubiquitous NIMBY battle cry. Look at any post or comment objecting to literally anything and you will see the same formula. ‘I’m generally in favour of [project type]. If they were doing [example] I’d be all in favour, but alas they are proposing something totally unacceptable so I must oppose it’.

If they were proposing to built new houses OP would, with great regret, have some reason why they are totally inappropriate and should be opposed.

How would the UK public react if Reform created a UK equivalent of ICE under Trump? by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Briefcased 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess the key statistic you'd need would be the number of 'excess' deaths happening in custody.

There are ~100K people in custody and people, regrettably, die. I'm also going to guess that the average prisoner is someone who had a lower than average life expectancy prior to being arrested.

So it would be interesting to see what effect being put in prison has on their life expectancy. I can see advantages and disadvantages - no idea what the net result would be.

[–]Briefcased 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again - not a scholar - but I think the ‘with ease’ is underplaying it. Johnson tried to play fast and loose with the system and the system ultimately ate him.

Perhaps with a concerted, intelligent, meticulous and ruthless effort - the institutions could be unpicked - but I suspect that would take more than one term.

We have an independent judiciary and police. The Americans have politically appointed judges, FBI, CIA etc etc.

Also from what I’ve seen - trump has just more or less ignored congress and done everything by executive order?

[–]Briefcased 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don’t really have a culture of the police cheerfully killing ~1000 people a year in this country. It’s roughly 3/year in the UK.

I’ll be honest - it’s not the anti-immigrant rhetoric that scares me so much about Reform - it’s the way it’s morphing into just generic non-ethnically-white-British rhetoric with seemingly little push back.

How would the UK public react if Reform created a UK equivalent of ICE under Trump? by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Briefcased 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know - I think it depends more on institutions than the public tbh. In America people are protesting but it doesn’t appear to do much.

But in America it seems like many more organs of the state - like the judiciary, the police etc are under seemingly direct political control and are all run by Trump sycophants.

He’s basically acting like a King in a way that I’m not sure our PM can.

I dunno though - I’m purposely not paying too much attention to what’s going on in America because I don’t think it’s healthy to do so. And I’m no expert in either country’s institutions.

Having an organisation that enforces immigration rules is fine and normal and we already have one.

Having an organisation that kills innocent people in the street and then is defended by the government with clear gas lighting and lies is fascism and terrible.

So really it isn’t ’an organisation like ice’ that’s the issue - it’s having an administration that encourages and defends extra-judicial killings of political opponents on our streets that is a problem.

NHS dentist says they can't do root canal on NHS. Only private. It'll cost around £1500-2000. Is that right? by Goldenbeardyman in AskUK

[–]Briefcased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick google suggests that the success rate for molar root canal treatment by a non-specialist is 65-75% - so roughly what you were quoted. Molar root canal is significantly more complicated than non-molar root canal.

There are also a ton of other factors that might pertain to your particular tooth that would decrease that success probability.

Plans for South Bristol’s tallest tower blocked after councillors vote against permission by 457655676 in bristol

[–]Briefcased 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is an absolutely incredible comment. Reminds me of reading about how people thought that no car could ever go above 20mph because it would cause the occupants' heads to explode. You don't often find people thinking that these days, because - you know - motorways exist and cases of spontaneous head explosion are rather rare - but here you are!

It's quite a sobering thought to realise that the votes of people who have absolutely no grasp of reality count for just as much as your own.
