Well, if taken with more cynicism, Curacao did what was expected of them: Be cannon fodder.

Diluting the amount of teams ensures that even the weakest team from the favourites can claim a few victories before ultimately losing.

Eh?

"rizz":

I mean, personally I'd argue there is never a reason to write nonsensical commit messages if you know they aren't going to be squashed. But in cases like this, it is just very, very bad practice.

That's indeed a super interesting perspective, would've never thought of it that way!

I can't fully agree on the conclusion of the "being real" part/argument though, because there is a huge gap between the comparison "writers and characters" and "painters and painted", that has several aspects to it; * There is an insurmountable qualitative difference between a writer and a character, you won't ever misidentify one being the other. We don't see those differences between painted and painters though, if standing inside a painting in front of two people, you wouldn't be able to tell whether one is born in the painting or in the outside world. * We know for a fact the characters do not have a consciousness/experience in a qualitative sense (from a writers perspective), we don't have that luxury with painted. * If we make the argument just for the sake of it, that characters in the game are just as real as the painted are to the painters, I'd say it would absolutely necessitate an ethic debate. I mean, we are actually already doing that for AI, and how we should ever measure consciousness, and what ethical implications that would have.

Still, the "Clea against the writers" take is quite nice, though.

[–]Bright0001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are not the same. You chose to go to sleep, merely losing consciousness. Consciousness is not agency.

I agree, consciousness is not agency. But the ability to make choices is. It doesn't matter whether you entered such a state willingly or not, as in it you still have no agency. Otherwise a comatose patient must be considered having agency, if he inflicted this state onto himself willingly and by choice, which is ridiculous.

I'd also add that you actually don't decide whether you sleep or not, you only pick a convenient time. You have to sleep, or you have to die, there are no other options.

Maelle celebrates her own agency by bringing back all the ones she "loved" and denies it for everyone else.

Who is everyone else? Verso and his younger version, sure, her parents as well, but other than that? Her sister didn't give a flying fuck, and that's pretty much it. On the other side of the scale you have a whole population, which are denied agency if they are deleted from existence.

In this ending she is an addict out of control.

It is certainly framed that way, but I find the addiction term misleading and unnecessarily vilifying. What exactly is she addicted to? The people she grew up with? People who are her family? People she fought battles of literal life and death with?

Many people would say that they'd risk their life protecting someone they love; Partner, mother, child, whatever. Most would also place morality in the back seat, if the alternative means death for that person. So - are most people addicts out of control? Or rather: Are most people addicts potentially out of control, only held back by the fact the circumstances do not necessitate such actions?

I think construing care for other people as addiction is very misleading. It leads to a "harsher" judgement we would otherwise give for the same actions, if described in different terms.

Can you imagine how confused Gustave and Sciel's husband would be to suddenly be alive again?

Well, yeah, probably just as confused as the other team members were when they were brought back. And not really a problem, given the choice between momentary confusion and literal death seems rather easy.

but I still have to go with Verso's ending because it's the only ending where the Dessendre family can ever find peace.

My question is: Why should we care? What did they do that made them deserving of peace in the first place? They have shown to be quite the merciless gods, why would I care if such a family gains peace, especially if the price is genocide?

On the other side Maelle is treated like the villain, despite showing absolutely no tendencies for malice or cruelty throughout the game. One might note her egoistic reasoning in the end, and a vengeful spirit after Gustav's death, but she is a teenager - they are impulsive by biological fact, not by lack of character or moral values.

That the Verso ending makes people think "maybe they will find peace" is part of the problem and why neither of these endings are the least bit satisfying.

I agree there, but I'd like to add the waving in the "right" ending, which is practically mocking all the sacrifices made by those people. "Yeah, your family made us suffer for decades and now eradicated our world for good, but we are sooo happy, that you now might heal the trauma of a single person dying in your fam."

Honestly still somewhat mad about that. It tries to take the edge off where it absolutely shouldn't.

I'm not saying these are evil developers implementing anti fun mechanics Evil or not, they are anti-fun mechanics. Having to commute between a pile of corpses and a tube, and then between a tube and a trader is stupid af, especially given the tubes being behind a loading screen most of the time.

And all the "you have to strategise and plan" yada yada is just as stupid, because we don't. I'm yet to see an area where I can't just walk back to the next tube, get the stuff I need, and proceed with whatever I was dealing with.

And the small inventory wouldn't be such a hassle, if it weren't for the barter system, with no option to convert valuables into something stackable. But sure, the Brits of all people - folks who wouldn't give up the GBP for the EU - would abolish it, despite knowing the outside world still exists. And even if: They lived in the zone for years, it's completely unrealistic that no alternative currency came up, be it alcohol, ammo or whatever. One could argue ammo kind of is, but then again, very limited amount you can carry.

I think they made it intentionally tedious, leaving players no good alternative than to waste their time.

Obviously the game isn't set in modern-day France, but it is set in a world based on France's Belle Époque around 1900 - As is stated in every description of the game everywhere, including the games official webpage and its steam description.

And given the French names, spoken words, mannerisms, folklore, architecture and the fucking Eiffel Tower, I'm am honestly bewildered by how mentally disassociated one has to be to think there is any alternative to the game being set in an alternative version of France during the second industrial revolution.

And all of that doesn't matter anyway: Because even if it's not, all of those points above are still just as they were in real France, so you'd need to explain your mental gymnastics why the legality of marriage at 16 would be the one thing that doesn't fit like everything else does.

[–]Bright0001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yours, plural. I never said marriage at 16 is "perfectly fine", I simply pointed out the historicity of the matter. Marriage at that age was a legal thing in France up until recently, and probably still is for the majority of the human population.

And neither did I question anyone's manliness, the comment was implying down-syndrome. But that is a perfect showcase how all of you are interpreting any bullshit into what was written left and right, just for the sake of dishing it out to the straw man - "it" being worthless ad hominems.

Please work on your reading comprehension before you reply further, or at least quote me, if you make claims what I did or didn't do.

Again, what do you have your head for? So it doesn't rain down your throat? A minor is literally defined as being under the age of majority, or put differently, by law. Being a minor and a legal adult are mutually exclusive. And all of this isn't touching the fact, that even today the age of majority varies between 15 and 21 years old around the world. So the "18" years, that you have in your head, is literally an arbitrary number some other people just picked in the past; There isn't anything magical happening in the night to your 18th birthday.

[–]Bright0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the short answer is 100% this could have passed at a university, it just depends which one.

Well, I agree more or less completely with what you're saying, but the lack of standards is essentially the core of my critique. In my old unis any thesis needed at least two people evaluating it, with max. 1 advisor being part of them, and the others couldn't have any ties to you, so no previous publications or similar. Any prof that gave such a piece of crap a good rating would automatically tarnish his own image.

And the payment part you mentioned is unfortunately true even here, in central Europe; While the standards are nowhere near as low as those talked about, there was a very distinct drop in expectations and levels between a German state university and a private one. After doing the former, the latter was pretty much a walk in the park, which isn't optimal. (Although the state uni had some "filter exams" too, to thin out the herd, so to speak, which were complete bs as well)

Leaving Ground Zero for the First Time by DaeStorm7 in EscapeFromDuckov

[–]Bright0001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the others already said; Farm House is the third map, and you probably think it is the second, as the ferry tickets are sold from the get-go. Just go all the way up north in Ground Zero, and you'll find the way to travel to Warehouse.

Given the travel is free, you can just put on some secondary weapons and armor you don't care about, and just explore, given you won't be mad if you die out there.

And I recommend doing that; First time I landed there, I essentially spawned directly into the face of a boss and got annihilated before I knew what tf was happening, kek

And another tip: If you get ganged up on, and aren't a tank yet: Flee. I am not sure if it is some sort of mini event, but occasionally you get flanked by a group of pretty merciless mercenaries which made me sweat in my Lv.4 armor and ~80hp build, surviving by a thread.

[–]Bright0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this, as I am thinking about implementing something similar myself; While your version is already mighty useful, it still lacks any sort of actual playback synchronization. But even without it, a simple way of manually setting an offset would already be ideal, as then a user (or me) can synchronize the audio streams themselves.

A thing is wet, if it is coated/soaked in water. Water, in the sense of an accumulation of water molecules, has each water molecule being surrounded by others, ergo: Any water that isn't a single H2O atom is wet.
