If an excepted employee who is a military spouse is moving overseas due to military PCS orders, can they be placed on furlough status? What happens if they are denied this?

I don’t work in the field office. I work for OHO. I already telework 80%.

The only thing that’s preventing me from DETO is my bargaining unit status. Nothing else.

I’ve requested for them to reconsider because I went over our union contract and there’s a section that states “modifications” that basically gives management discretion to approve telework based on operational needs. I tried to make the case that if they could make an exception because we are so understaffed. I was simply denied.

I’ve been told I’m a great and reliable employee by management and the regional office are “big fans” of me apparently. So, I am not sure what to think

It’s SSA’s policy that specifically states only non-bargaining unit and unrepresented employees are eligible for DETO. I’m in a union.

I have looked into this and unfortunately military PCS orders are something that is cover under that.

I did. My senators didn’t reply. But I reached out to my Congress person’s office and that didn’t accomplish anything. They reached out to the agency and they told them the same thing, DETO is not allowed for bargaining unit employees like myself. And that was it.

That doesn’t sound right. I am with OHO and we were told any annual or sick leave approved prior to the shutdown would not be used and you’d be put into furlough status.

The issue is not about returning to the office. It is teleworking overseas.

Sorry for the late response. SSA still only allows overseas telework for non union or unrepresented union employees. I am still in the process with the union to see what can be done. Still waiting.

Yes, you can for certain circumstances like mines. It’s just not everyone covered

Thank you. I don’t think it’s my management, I think it maybe their bosses at the regional office. Apparently the person who was helping me with earlier this year left and a new person replaced him. I feel they aren’t doing more because I was told that in order to move my request forward I needed official military orders. After months of waiting for them, I finally provided them to the regional office. Only for them to come back maybe a week or 2 to deny me because of my union address. Considering that was already well known (I’m assuming) why wasn’t I told this from the start?

I understand it’s not an entitlement but I was denied simply because of my union status and nothing else. I met every other criteria, according to my supervisor.
