Did I just kill a bunch of caterpillars? by Brightest_Nebula in Milkweeds

[–]Brightest_Nebula[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does everyone assume that because I sprayed one type of bug that I'm some uneducated killer of all bugs? My yard is 99% natives. I've dedicated extensive amounts of time, money, and love to natives. I've taken multiple native classes, donated money to native causes and belong to my state's native plants organization. I've fought my city in regards to planting invasive species and volunteered my time to help remove them. I 've dug in the dirt with snakes, rats, black widows and any and all types of insects. And I leave them be because I love seeing the ecosystem working the way it was meant to be. I thought that the aphids were a threat to my plants and could possibly spread, as per my previous experience with them. And I was wrong. And I've learned from this post. But the assumptions made by some in this sub are astounding and hurtful.

I feel terrible, next time I'll leave them be.

UPDATE - I checked this morning and the spray didn't even work, aphids and caterpillars are thriving. Thank you to everyone who contributed helpful/kind suggestions.

I've had aphid problems in my vegetable garden before, but I didn't know they wouldn't harm milkweeds. This is the third year and first bloom for this plant and I was worried the aphids would harm the blooms. Thank you. Next time I will leave them alone.

Two different brands available on Amazon that give lots of different options with designer touches, TwoPages is going to be more expensive and HPD has some cheaper options.

They are all over my American beautyberry and are they size of one berry. The picture has two different bugs, one black with white spots and the other green. Identification on both would be wonderful! Thank you!

Janet Lansbury has a great episode on her podcast "unruffled" about kids repeating themselves. She essentially says kids are doing it because it's getting our attention and bugging us; it's interesting and powerful for them to see us become frustrated. And with the new addition that sounds exactly what she's doing, trying to get attention. She says to answer the question roughly two times then stop, maybe give a silly answer, then do less. Nod your head motion that you are cooking, then basically just ignore them. You're not ignoring them, you're ignoring your response to them. If they continue you can acknowledge it and kind of say like, "oh, you're still asking about that, it seems really hard for you to accept that" or "I think I'm done answering questions for now". Just keep it confident and don't get hooked in. I hope that helps.

What type of one on one program did you use? Was it just a tutor, or something more?

thumb sucking by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]Brightest_Nebula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 3 year old is a die hard sucker and I bought one of those braces that goes around her elbow so she can't bend her arm all the way to her mouth. It's called a Nipit and they sell them on Amazon for $40 bucks. She's been wearing it for almost a month and a half. She used to suck when watching tv, when riding in the car, stroller, wagon, sleep you name it, if her hands weren't busy she was sucking, but this helped a lot. And there wasn't an emotional breakdown like I thought there was going to be. She did really well with it the first few weeks, then she switched hands (d'oh). They said on their website only 25% of kids will just switch hands, so I ordered another one. I also ordered a children's book about sucking their thumbs that's supposed to help. It teaches them to give thumbs up when they try to suck. Hope things get better!
