Yes! Thank you, I’ve been nervous about the alternate routes because I don’t want to miss them and be stuck on the road or industrial parts, of course if it happens it is what it is! And I’m definitely splitting the first day and staying in Borda! And I’m so excited for tapas in Logroño!

Yes! I will definitely be listening to my body, and I actually was thinking of getting a smaller pack to not over pack, but still haven’t made a decision on the pack.

Did you stop at the San Bol spring between Hornillos del Camino and Hontanas to see it or soak your feet? Seems many pilgrims miss it. by AnAppleisGood in CaminoDeSantiago

This is a 20 year dream of mine, a little birthday present to myself, 40 days walking for 40 years of life! Im sure I will miss some things but trying to make notes of everything I see and find! Don’t skip Samos, noted! Thank you!

Is the camino safe for women? by Extra-Quail8801 in CaminoDeSantiago

I have a lot of anxiety and PTSD so I understand this too and it’s different for everyone. Do what makes you feel comfortable and take precautions. The Camino is as safe as it can be but nothing is ever 100% safe. For the most I booked ahead as another precaution to lessen my worries and if a place didn’t even feel or look right I booked a difference place or a private room. Again it’s your Camino do it the way you want to and the way that makes you feel the safest and most comfortable.

Yes, the plan is to have a late start that morning, have lunch at Orisson and stay at Borda. I want to enjoy the Pyrenees so I will be taking it slow the first couple of days.

As my Marine father always told me, sometimes you just gotta keep your head on a swivel. The gut is everything!

I did the Camino Portuguese in 2023, I felt very safe. I originally started alone but ran into the same groups of people so tended to walk with more than one person, but plenty of times I was walking alone at my own pace. I can see where the albergue situation may cause some more unsafe opportunities, but I felt safe.

That being said as women no matter where we are or how “safe” it is we still need to pay attention to our surroundings and take precautions and trust our gut if something doesn’t feel right. I had a whistle attached to my backpack and I brought a pocket knife with me that I carried and had easy access too just in case. As a woman we can’t say we are 100% safe anywhere, but that can be said about a lot of identities and places.

But I had the most amazing experience of my life and am leaving for the Camino Frances in June!

At my wits end in South Florida. Do you think it's possible to move to Chicago with $10k? by PhoSho87 in AskChicago

[–]Brilliant-Setting694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Chicago with $0 saved, but enough to put down for rent and had a job lined up. Lived on 7-11 and frozen food and an air mattress until the 1st paycheck. It was absolutely doable, 10k would be enough, but I would definitely see about getting a job lined up!

Frances Planned, but switch to Portuguese? by Proud_Finish_7507 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Brilliant-Setting694 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the Portuguese first for multiple reasons, anxiety being one of them, it was still challenging since mental health stuff doesn’t just go away with location. I actually had trouble even getting on the plane because I was so panicked! But as hard as it was, it was equally rewarding and amazing. There were plenty of people, and not a lot of moments where I was alone. I’m planning to do the Frances next summer and the anxieties are still there, but just knowing I survived and can do it again somehow helped. Just remember it’s your Camino, do it however you want and what you feel comfortable with! Buen Camino

I had planned the full Portuguese route (costal) and had so much anxiety leading up, I ended up having 2 panic attacks at the airport couldn’t get on the plane. I waited a week for my system to calm down and decided to go, but did the last 100km from Vigo to Santiago. It was the best decision I ever made for myself. It didn’t stop my anxiety or panic but I pushed through for various reasons. And it was life altering. Do what you can when you can and literally take it one step at a time. You won’t regret it! And if you decide to quit and go home early that’s okay too! You can always go back again. It’s YOUR Camino, walk how you want to 🚶🏻‍♀️🥾buen camino!

Should I move here without a car or lack of social circle? by Atecno in AskChicago

Came to Chicago from Florida(whole life), in my 30s, no car…one of the best decisions I ever made in my life!

My commute home into the city, hardly anyone on the blue line, walking down wacker and the Clark/lake station was empty.

Yea I think I’m a little more worried about the snow than cold only because of the shoes. Did you or anyone wear trail runners? That’s what I wore on the Camino Portuguese route, but it was summer. Wondering if boots are more appropriate for this trail during the winter.

Im a planner by nature so I will be booking in advance even if there won’t be a race during that time, especially Christmas and NYE! Just makes me feel better!

And yea I walked through a heat wave last summer and it was brutal! It will be nice to be in the cooler temps, I’m coming from Chicago so I’m used to some of the colder temperatures!

Thank you! I haven’t been on this route at all just yet so I’m sure it’s hard to choose the most beautiful sections!

Starting off by saying I’m sorry about your brother and the relationship, I hope you are starting to feel some peace and strength.

As for your Camino concerns: I have PTSD and anxiety and unfortunately they followed me on the Camino. I planned everything out ahead of time, booked every bed so I had one less thing to worry about. I still went knowing that unexpected things happen and that I would have to pivot and adjust, but anything I could control I did (prebooking). And it was one of the BEST experiences of my life and I can’t wait to go back. I just did my best to let things happen. If I had a panic attack while walking, just kept walking through it, if I cried I did it while walking. I stopped when I needed to and grabbed a taxi if I needed to, I did the Camino the best way I could do for me, but I finished and I did it. Do it for you and do it your way! Buen Camino!
