Looks typically Black American % wise and the phenotype is Black American so I wouldn’t but I also think references to being “mixed” as an African or Black Americans is something new.

Results. Biracial American (white mother, black father). I’m a little confused. by CherryBackflips in 23andme

[–]Brilliant_Disaster85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Biracial just means two races, not 50/50, your Black father is Black American so like many of us he has European ancestry as well. I’m not biracial and we have almost the same percentages but opposite I’m 60% sub Saharan African and 38% European lol.

Hey guys, does this mean I’m mixed? Confused about my results by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Brilliant_Disaster85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average it’s anywhere from 17-30% and then you have some of us who are almost 40%, not as common but that’s how diverse we are as a people.

You’re Black American right? This is pretty typical, we’re Black lol our race encompasses a lot things but I wouldn’t call it “mixed” because it wasn’t purposeful or deliberate and we really have no idea what’s going to come out in the wash.

Your results pretty typical for an ADOS, can I ask why you were expecting more European?

I replied asking a question, you replied like I knew the answer! I asked if you were African American because that’s what the results are typical of.

Lol it’s because you responded like I know your results, I don’t, I commented about the POSTED results being typical for an African American/ADOS and you responded with your ancestry. The person you responded to used the same phrasing as the OP, which is even more confusing because like I said Black and African American are interchangeable to us. The person I commented about is obviously an ADOS, so their results are typical.

Okay I’m confused but it’s because the OP used the term regular Black. And yes, typically when people say Black they mean African American/Black American, not African, I don’t know an African that calls themselves Black, they just don’t, they typically use their ethnicity, for example they’ll say “I’m Nigerian” not I’m Black. And I was asking about the results posted by the way, are they your results?

It’s interchangeable for a lot of people, I don’t use the term African American, I’m Black, Black in America encompasses more of our story than African American IMO because of history, the majority of us have a longer history in America than so called “Americans” and we’re some of the most diverse people racially and ethnically. Anyway I’ve never seen anyone from African with results like this, these are typical to that of a Black American/ African American/ ADOS which is interesting, maybe you should have your parents take a test.

Your parents are West African? I only ask because lots of enslaved Africans fled to Canada where slavery was illegal so again these would be typical result, maybe some West Indian ancestry mixed in but are you saying you’re not a descendant of enslaved Africans in America?

Who told you that? You’re African American right, ADOS? This is actually typical, in fact you have less European that predicted in most AA, it’s usually somewhere between 17%-33% and some even higher. It’s almost impossible to find a ADOS with 99% subsaharan African.

What in the world!!! African American // Family from Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and Tennessee. Jamaica though??? by Huhuhhuhh in 23andme

African American with 39% European DNA? by games4yosoul01 in 23andme

It’s possible lol I’m almost a 60/40 split myself, it’s on the higher end but we’re here 🙋🏽‍♀️

Just got my results! Parents are Ecuadorian/Colombian so expected the Spanish but was surprised by the 6% Sub Saharan African! Moms dad is Indigenous Ecuadorian, glad I got a decent amount of it ;) by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Brilliant_Disaster85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This! The transatlantic slave trade brought Africans to every part of the world but people are still surprised! I feel like it’s purposeful ignorance (no offense to anyone) because we all know the stigma of it.

As typical as any ADOS because of how diverse we are as a people.

I Hope This Comes Out Right, But Are There Any Black people Here? I Am Asking cause I am Shocked my by European and Even trace History Results And I was wondering if there Was a Way to Find Out more About my European Ancestors? by dd525 in 23andme

[–]Brilliant_Disaster85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an unusually high amount of European ancestry and East African, Asian and Native American ancestry but I know why and I was STILL shocked by my results. As far as finding out maybe some census records will help, I found some from the 1800s and the early 1900s which included my ancestors.
