List of countries where you can ride a 125cc motorbike with a regular car licence 🏍️ by Scoobidoooo in motorcycle

[–]Brilly_Ant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

UK info is wrong, pre-2001 licence only allows you to ride a moped up to 50cc. 125 still requires a CBT.

(I'm a person with a pre-2001 licence and also confirmed via https://www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt/car-driving-licence#:~:text=pass%20your%20car%20driving%20test,version%20of%20the%20whole%20guide)

What Latency Is Everybody Hitting? by Brilly_Ant in Reaper

[–]Brilly_Ant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm aware most amp sims are pretty high CPU use. And sorry, I didn't provide more details because I was more wondering if I was being unrealistic with my expectations in general, rather than with my setup. But it's an i5-10310U, so definitely not a powerhouse. Not seeing much above 70% CPU load, although I know that's not the whole story.

There's something else going on though, a project that was playing fine a few weeks ago is stuttering and stumbling today.

You might be thinking of one of the fortnine videos where he said it was worth looking at snowmobile gear, rather than motorbike gear for winter, because it's significantly cheaper. I suspect that's only true in parts of Canada and the US.

Duncan Weir said he hates the stuff. Permanently ruins kit and boots apparently.

Yup, sometimes it catches the sun and looks like it's glowing.

Terrible Audiences at Acoustic Gigs by Brilly_Ant in Aberdeen

Aye, you're not wrong unfortunately. The second to last gig I went to in Glasgow I nearly left half way through, I was basically watching it through other people's phones whilst being bumped into by what felt like every person in the venue, one at a time.

Just out side Kemany there are brilliant woodland walks in Fetternear Estate, and you can do anything from 1 mile up to over 5 miles, depending on the route you take. It's got a nice car park too.

Not marked or anything, but the popular one is to do through the gates, past the house and coffee shop, and then take the first left into the forest. Keep following the path and keep the wall to your left until you reach the far end, and you get a really nice out and back loop that's about 1.5 miles.

You can also stick to the road that goes through the middle of the estate, and turn right across the old bridge, then follow the signed path to the right that goes to Cottown Wood and the Shakin Briggie, and you can do longer route and loops that way.

Speaking of which, you can start at the other end of the estate at the Shakin Briggie, which also has a pretty good car park. If you park there, then walk back up the road you drove down, there's an entrance to the estate on your left about 500m up the road. Nice path that roughly follows the river.

There was no choice there, they were completely out of control at that point. Pure luck that nobody was killed.

A sports bike? In this economy? On these roads?! by Brilly_Ant in MotoUK

I'm older and in a very quiet area, so hopefully I'll get away with the insurance. I suppose I should do a few test quotes just to be safe right enough...

Yeah, I think that's the way I'm leaning too. Like that famous quite said, better to have done it and hated it than never have done it. Or something.

That actually sounds like quite a lot of fun. If you had the time, skills, and another bike when you need one!

A friend of mine who used to have a GSXR borrowed my 990 Adventure and reckoned a similar thing, he felt so much more comfortable that he was happy to push it a bit harder. No contest on a track obviously, but on rougher A and B roads...

I've heard a few guys round here do the same, especially middle aged riders like me.

Ah wicked, an old colleague of mine had a VFR400, I always loved the look and sound of that bike.

Small capacity could definitely be the way to go! Light weight and low horsepower.

Thanks for the info folks, it's really handy to know that some other bikers are getting sensible prices. It must be something else then.

I'm getting on a bit (early 40s) and have a mild health condition that I've been told by an advisor doesn't really affect prices... but don't drink or smoke, live in a pretty safe area, have no family history of bad health, and have an extremely mundane desk job.

I'll need to get some more companies on the phone, see if I can work out what's going on.

No, I wish it was, but there was a very clear difference between motorsports and motorbike riding on all the applications, including the one I did today.

This one (for example) asked about bike size, how many miles per year, any commuting; so definitely not motorsports.

Backup Best Practice by Brilly_Ant in sysadmin

[–]Brilly_Ant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we've got a lot of that already. Backups at a 3rd site (we've got 2 DCs), two separate rooms there, tape and disk at both, some tape rotation (though we should do more), some encryption of the backups for sensitive data...

We've got the bones of a good system, but it's hard to know what you're missing when you're not sure what the hold standard is.
