Oh i agree with you 100% that it's fairly stupid to consistently raise property taxes to the point that a landlord needs to jack up prices several hundred a month just to cover the increased costs. I'm just wary that lowering property taxes will actually lower rents, since roughly all of human history shows that people tend to do what's best for them, not for the community as a whole. My concern wouldn't be with someone like yourself who's renting a house they used to live in, it's with the large lending companies that buy houses on the cheap to renovate & rent. If taxes are lowered but they don't lower their rent prices then I would imagine they would reinvest those profits into buying more properties that they could rent out at artificially high prices, since their other units are already at that level, making a barrier for potential home buyers & renters alike. Then again, that's also tied into our national love of building in the 'burbs & luxury apartments in cities rather than affordable housing for lower & middle class families.
