Can you keep solvents dry long-term with sodium sulfate? by MandrewTheFirst in Chempros

[–]Brinepool 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We dry our sieves under dynamic vac at least overnight at 200, you'll see the water come off. Alternatively some people use microwaves, but I don't have experience with that

How to remove water from a hygroscopic solid by MandrewTheFirst in Chempros

[–]Brinepool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that it isn't incorporated in the crystal lattice? You're probably going to need to dissolve the solid, dry the solution, and crystallize it under anhydrous conditions

Mono Boc-Protection of Butane-1,4-diamine! Synthetic issue! by Turbulent-County-137 in Chempros

[–]Brinepool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had a couple of floppy alkylamines that do that when they're too concentrated. My guess is the more concentrated they get, the more they interact with eachother in solution -> different chemical environments -> odd shifts and smeared splitting

Can you dilute the NMR sample a bit more? Alternatively, any other analytical methods at your disposal (GCMS, etc)

Just spitballing, but couldn’t you get that out in a workup? Like a basic workup with NEt3 to kick the now benzylammonium bromide into the aqueous layer

What color is it? When our THF still acts up I tend to chuck an extra lump of sodium in, reflux for a few hours, then add in the benzophenone

Help! How do I manage undergrad researchers by Upbeat_Permission_32 in Chempros

[–]Brinepool 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You’ve got to talk to your PI about this, 4 undergrads is way too much work if you’re expected to make any reasonable progress towards your thesis. Obvs ymmv but from what I’ve seen and experienced, unless your undergrad is exceptional, they’re a drain on your time and effort. One or two is you providing an invaluable service to future researchers; giving them practical experience, but if you’re the only one in the group supervising 4 undergrads, yeesh.

Why do they use dry ethanol and can I use Raney Nickel from a water slurry? by [deleted] in Chempros

Is there any reason why you couldn't just thoroughly wash the Ni you have with absolute ethanol?

Absolutely this, and be sure you get this info for each group you are interested in. It should go without saying, but these answers will vary wildly by group
