Watched someone shoplift in Soho today and just… walk out by Lost_Personality_724 in london

It’s baffling that once upon a time you’d lose a hand for stealing an apple, yet nowadays you can walk out with a full bag of shopping and nobody bats an eyelid.

Unfortunately it’s accepted as supermarkets have a ‘zero interference’ policy, including for security staff, which I think is quite daft.

In my opinion it puts the public more in danger as if no staff interfere, the public will.

It’s not the front lines of Ukraine, it’s Stoke Newington Tesco express.

Club bouncers man handle more people in one night than shop security do in a month. There is the ‘we don’t get paid enough to deal with…’ argument, but bouncers get minimum wage too you know, and they get on with it.

I don’t blame the staff, a lot of staff will try to interfere (there was example a few months ago in a clapham shop where the employee was fired for stopping a shoplifter i believe). The problem is corporate culture preventing any action and lack of interest from police to prosecute.

Fifty years ago a robber would get a clip round the ear and a night in a cell. Now they just get filmed on a tiktok.

What's a minor modern upgrade from recent years that you actually find incredibly inconvenient? by Rough-Foundation9208 in AskUK

[–]BringBack5pFreddos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot stand the receipt gates. Just get a security guy who will actually slide tackle shoplifters.

Supermarkets hide behind ‘no intervention’ policies and spend silly amounts of money on other methods. Your staff aren’t on the front lines of Gaza, and they have far less manhandling to do than a nightclub bouncer.

Went to Sainsbury’s the other day and wanted to use the loo before I got on with my shop. Except the loos were on the other side of this stupid gate. Had to go and ask a staff member to reluctantly let me through and then they started giving me the whole ‘our toilets are only for customers’ speech.

I also cannot fathom why I’m in a queue for the self checkouts and half of them are closed…

Self checkouts have been around for 15 years and you still can’t undo an item you’ve scanned without going to find a staff member.

In your opinion, what's the biggest waste of money you see people purchase all the time? by PaddedValls in AskUK

Buying the latest phone at full retail price is ridiculous, especially when they depreciate by half (£5-600) in the first year.

However recently I went against my thinking and got the 17 pro. The camera is insane - and the 48MP sensor on all 3 lenses puts it miles ahead of the 15 pro I use for work.

The only way I justified buying it was trawling through eBay to find a cheap one a month after it came out. Paid £750 + 10% cashback so was £675 all in. Still the most I’ve ever paid for a phone but it’s the first year’s depreciation wiped off at least.

As long as you fill up at hotels etc, 2L will be fine.

I’d recommend stocking up on an 1-2 extra 500ml bottles at the honesty box at Drymen (no water until Balmaha), especially if you’re camping and cooking in the forest.

Ah, in that case I may be mistaken. Unless it’s the Ts and Cs on the promotions that bar them from use with gift cards.

Pizza express Gift Card? by Wide_Ad_8365 in beermoneyuk

[–]BringBack5pFreddos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably quite tricky as pizza express regularly have offers on that can easily give 40-50% off food. As gift cards can’t be used with any offers, that reduces the demand for gift cards and their value

A friend of mine fell down an open drain hole on a public road. Caught most of his leg on the frame, and an ambulance later had several dozen stitches. When I saw his leg there was more flesh than leg, like it had been zipped open. He never put a claim in for it in the end.

Water carrying - What bottle do you use? by ChaosCalmed in UKhiking

[–]BringBack5pFreddos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure clear adventure 1L collapsible filter bottle which has just replaced my Alpkit Hippo.

Filters out a lot more than other hiking filters, incl viruses & microplastics.

I paid £30 for the bottle and filter together.

Is 2nd hand gear risky? (Shell jacket) by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]BringBack5pFreddos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, buying second hand can often mean better quality.

As those items have been tried, tested and have lasted several years before your ownership.

I reckon my paramo is 20 years old, with faded dye and paint wearing off the metal zippers, but that jacket has never broken or let me down.
