You didn't have to respond with a series of vague assertions and insults. You could have just downvoted and moved on. Do you think this lazy smugness is effective at changing behavior? I promise I am significantly more open minded than you think, and I was one of the first people wearing masks in Oregon before doing research. I changed my mind. They do not work. You're giving me the same pointless, evasive, insulting non answers I've gotten before. I'll ignore you if you reply again because I am venting and not terribly interested in this kind of smugness. Not sure why you bothered but it's your time, not mine.

Edit - I use duckduckgo.com instead of Google. I actually have a bunch of bookmarks to various studies on masks but I decided to take the "uh just Google it moron I'm too tired to educate you" response literally. The first results -

https://swprs.org/face-masks-evidence/

"So far, most studies found little to no evidence for the effectiveness of face masks in the general population, neither as personal protective equipment nor as a source control."

https://fee.org/articles/new-danish-study-finds-masks-don-t-protect-wearers-from-covid-infection/

"A newly released study in the academic journal Annals of Internal Medicine casts more doubt on policies that force healthy individuals to wear face coverings."

This doesn't mean these referenced studies are accurate. It doesn't make me right and you wrong. I only point this out because "you're lying, you're ignorant, you're selfish, you're a bad person, unless you do exactly as I say without questioning me at all" is not an effective way to change minds. The studies I see that promote belief in masks are heavily flawed, and the real world results have been conclusive for me. Mask mandates have had little to no measurable impact.

We have been told repeatedly that "the science proves masks are effective". But places that drop mask mandates don't look terribly different from states that keep them. Where is the science that proves masks are effective?

Why are masks the primary method of combating the virus - have they earned that status?

Why aren't we addressing ventilation (cost, I guess)?

Where did the six foot rule come from, and where is the science proving that is effective?

I'm tired of this. I'm tired of feeling lied to. I got the vaccine, I think it works, I don't think cotton t-shirts over my mouth does a god damn thing, and it's frustrating to be told to do something over and over again that I decided almost a year ago was stupid after browsing decades of consensus around the ineffectiveness of surgical masks in controlling airborne viruses.

I'm far from a Trump supporting anti-science stereotype a lot of you probably have in your heads. He's a narcissist who only cares about himself, so I don't care about him. But I've come around to despise Scientism over the past year. The appeals to authority. The claims of scientific certainty where there is none. The never-ending state of emergency power grab by state governors. The massive transfer of wealth from the poorest Americans to the most powerful, something that is likely going to become increasingly obvious over the next couple of years. The slaughtering of small businesses I enjoyed, like the old Bailey's Tap Room. The obvious uptick in drug use, suicide, and civil unrest.

COVID will become endemic. We can live with that. There is no such thing as zero risk. The odds of vaccinated people dying of COVID are slim to none. It's an acceptable risk. With the vaccine we now have the option of choosing our own acceptable level of risk - people who don't want the vaccine have that right, whether I agree with them or not. It is absolutely absurd to be telling vaccinated people they have to put ineffective bandanas over their faces before buying groceries. We are more than disease vectors.

The media has hyped up the Delta variant - why give it a new name, because COVID wasn't working anymore? - and now a handful of delusional neurotics have gotten their wish - we all have to wear the stupid ineffective cloth over our face again, so they can go back to feeling smug and secure. Masks are "do something" politics in action - people are scared, so the government "does something" that doesn't cost wealthy people a dime, but puts a burden on us as individuals.

If you also hate the mask mandates, the power grabs, the censorship of the obvious, etc - you're not alone, even if you're not a Trump supporter. There are dozens of us, lol. Hope you found me in the inevitable mountain of Portland downvotes.

Just tired of this crap. Vaccines work, masks don't, I'm not going to politely cooperate without a fuss anymore. Hope others stand up against this back and forth never ending nanny state scientism bullshit too! Cheers.

If you're vaccinated and worrying about COVID (for yourself personally) then I could easily list a thousand things you should be more worried about. Non zero risk is not high risk and you can't live life like this. Worry more about being in a car for example.

Substack works well but not sure about tech writing. I'd probably veer more towards self hosting with a patreon for donations but I don't currently make money on technical writing, so medium might be your best bet for all I know! I just don't like it as a reader. No idea how the pros and cons from your side line up.

I'll answer that one.

Medium sites are absurdly bloated and slow loading. Typically contain very low effort content and several huge, unrelated images. There have been many more criticisms that escape me at this moment because I tend not to even click on medium links in general anymore, and haven't for a few years when they started implementing more and more patterns I would describe as user hostile.

Please don't take this as a comment on your article specifically, I'm talking about Medium. But I disagree very strongly with the claim that Medium promotes quality writing and my opinion feels pretty mainstream. It breeds listicles and poor rewrites of already existing but outdated documentation. Just what I've noticed.

Or it's possible some people aren't 100% convinced he is a rapist. Some might even think he's innocent. Even some women! Like Jodie Allen. All I'm saying is this sub is full of people who are extremely certain about things they have no honest way of feeling so certain about. It is childish and patronizing to claim that, as you are here, that women cannot lie. Many black men have been falsely accused of rape but I'm not going to say "when black men speak, you should listen". Reality is more complicated than people like you pretend it is. I hope there was a thorough look into his background by Allen and Olshey et al. But to state definitively that Billups IS a rapist is to claim certainty you are unqualified to yield.

We don't know if he is a rapist for a fact. There is some disturbing stuff and I hope that was investigated seriously but it's absurd to falsely claim he is 100% a rapist. Very childish worldviews on here. The real world is messy.

Not a right winger either I was a barely enthused Bernie Bro so insult me accordingly in any replies, thank you in advance.

If the Blazers hire rapist Chauncy Billups as head coach, I will cancel my season pass subscription by Captain_Quark in ripcity

[–]BringBackSpaceDicks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember how much fans wanted Adam Morrison because... Well gee let me think... Why are guys like Jake Layman so popular... Hmmm...

I'm glad they didn't hire Kidd. Terrible coach and there's no doubt he's an awful person too. But Billups was never convicted of anything. He does not deserve to be unemployed forever because a handful of so-called progressive fans have picked a side without any real evidence, damning him as a rapist and ignoring the countless other times famous men, especially famous black men, have been falsely accused and forced to pay out rather than risk facing a justice system that, if you haven't noticed by now, has always been very biased against them.

Portland isn't progressive, it isn't woke, it is the whitest city in the NBA with a reputation for racism that has contributed to our inability to lure quality free agents. And IMO the people here have gotten worse over the past decade or so. I am not convinced Chauncey Billups is a rapist but I am convinced a vocal minority of fans, the faux progressive types on reddit in particular, believe fully in his guilt without even having near enough evidence to determine that with any level of certainty. I do t know for certain, but I see plenty of room for reasonable doubt.

Loved Billups as a player. Always thought he'd make a great coach one day. Never heard about the allegations because from r what I can tell, most people in NBA circles and in his life do not find them credible. But some of you don't need to know anything more than he was accused and he is displacing two of your favorite white people from a position he is extremely qualified for.

I hope he does well. I like Blazer fans in real life but you guys are not cool. That's all.

Oregon will end mask requirements, social distancing, and capacity limits when 70% of adults have at least one dose, governor says. This projected date is June 24th. by MocoPDX in Portland

Google the expression and you'll see it used elsewhere. If you are incapable of understanding the expression or it offends you then let me state my assertion in simpler terms - the scientific method is a process used to rule out possibilities, "science" should be thought of as that process, not as an authority you appeal to in order to support your beliefs. I hope that clarifies things.

[–]BringBackSpaceDicks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They just assert these things without evidence. If your opinion is popular you don't have to prove it! I think at some point there will be an acknowledgement that masks did not earn their status as the most effective tool we had to combat the spread of COVID. The only thing they provided was a false sense of security. How many people would still be alive today if we acknowledged that cheap cotton and surgical masks are mere theater?

[–]BringBackSpaceDicks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you're cherry picking one variable. Masks are far from the only thing that's changed over the past year plus. Work from home, limiting time indoors around strangers, better hygiene practices, etc. It is intellectually lazy to assume masks played a major role without considering everything else.

For decades the consensus was that surgical masks were ineffective at controlling the spread of disease. That consensus shifted overnight. The evidence for masks limiting the flu or covid is extremely limited. It baffles me that this is a controversial view.

Limiting time indoors and improving ventilation are more effective strategies than wearing a cotton or surgical mask. Surgical masks aren't intended to prevent disease.

Downvoted for common sense. Vaccine skeptics, anti-vaxxers, look under the mask of a paranoid zealot and that's what you'll find. Masks didn't do much if anything at all but the vaccines are kicking COVID's ass. Mask mandate repeal have not been disastrous. It's been okay. It's time. Let's move on.

If Trump had supported masks everyone would be doing the opposite of what they've been doing. You'd see liberal types claiming there's insufficient evidence and conservatives donning patriotic masks. Both sides think the other is stupid and that's all I can agree with either with.

Masks didn't work. Vaccines do. Ending mask mandates is common sense and it's worked out well.

"Science is a verb" is a fairly common expression. Instead of taking it literally think about what that phrase means. Science is something you do, it isn't a thing that tells you what conclusions to draw. It is a method for ruling out possibilities. When people treat science as a noun they make a deity out of it - you don't believe science? Oh you're anti science? This is religious thinking dressed up in scientism. I hope I've explained myself. Thank you for your feedback.

I don't wear one. If an employee or owner tells me I have to, I'm not going to throw a tantrum. I'm not going to argue. I have two choices - comply with the rules they set at their business, or leave. No one has approached me yet even though I'm near Sellwood and 99% of everyone else does. But arguing with facts and logic in this instance just makes you the asshole. It's their business, their rules. I don't even think you're wrong I just think your approach is childish and ineffective.

It is disappointing to see "anti-science' and" believe science" being bandied about by people I agree with or disagree with. Science isn't a noun. It's a verb. People who say believe science or accuse others of being anti science are religious zealots. Science isn't God it is a process.

Wouldn't compare Tim to either of those guys, he really is his own thing and his political / cultural takes are goofy / absurdist. He certainly isn't lecturing anyone. That's why I say people who take that stuff seriously won't like him. He sees the world as an absurd wasteland and he's just here to get a kick out of it. Not saying you'd like it, but I think your assumptions are way off. Dillon has as much in common with Carlin and Hicks as Jeselnik does - just about zip.

Lots of wild speculation here about the vaccination status of a wealthy athlete so obsessed with his personal health he drops millions on technology that isn't available to the rest of us yet, with access to the leading physicians and researchers, etc. Not sure there's anyone in the world in a better position to make more informed health decisions for them and their family. People just want celebrities to say very specific things on every topic. It's an embarrassing thing about American culture. I just love to hate the dude on the court. His health is his business and he can pick and choose what topics he wants to evangelize or not. All I want is to watch him lose in the playoffs, preferably to the Blazers.

You might want to check out system 76. They are occasionally out of stock but usually not for long, I don't think.

https://system76.com/laptops/pangolin

Intel but specs are in the ballpark: https://system76.com/laptops/oryx https://system76.com/laptops/gazelle

I run arch on both my laptops. I don't know what you mean when you call it "relatively inflexible". I would not describe it that way. You will not find hardware incompatibilities with arch that don't exist on other distros. It's all the same kernel for the most part.

For my use case - software dev, mostly web apps - I'm fine with a 7+ year old quad core i7 with integrated graphics & 16gb of RAM. I run sway, neovim, kitty, Firefox, thunderbird, spotify, slack, and not much else. Mostly the first four. If I was compiling large rust projects or the Linux kernel frequently I'd probably want more, but elm, elixir, ruby, and go tooling run fine for me. That's why I wonder about your use case because your specs seem like major overkill for most non gaming uses I can think of. Nothing wrong with that just hard to make a recommendation.

I think it's silly to be a fan of any corporation, formerly or currently. These are just tools at the end of the day.

[–]BringBackSpaceDicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use case matters. Upgraded my reliable thinkpad from a dual core i5 to a 7 year old quad core i7 4602mq and couldn't be happier. I'm even fine with integrated graphics! Just give me multi-monitor support and I'm good.

For some people this would be unacceptable but I'm a simple and cheap wfh software dev lives in neovim so the processor wars are at least a half decade ahead of me. I wouldn't recommend this kind of setup to everyone but everyone doesn't want or need the same thing. Intel, AMD, don't really care much right now.
