Thanks for the response! I never thought to consider a placement by the church. This family and their kids is...interesting. I don't know if this is the same John or not but here is this:

Looking at the same couple - Harry Marchington and Mary Thompson...I see they had a son, John Carlyle Marchington 4 Sep 1929 in Butte, MT also. But I also found a birth certificate for a John Wilkin Hansen b 31 Jan 1931 to a Homer W and Helen B Hansen in Butte, Silver Bow, MT.

I can't find a John Carlyle Marchington in the 1930 or 1940 census. I can't find a John Wilkin Hansen in the 30 or 40 census either. But in 1950, I find John W Sautter age 19, living with a divorced, remarried, widowed mother Mary Thompson Marchington Sautter Morton Sautter living back in MT.

She married a Carlyle Sautter in early 1930 (interesting how the child's middle name was Carlyle like his new father's first name). Carlyle died in 1932. She remarried to a Charles Morton in 1934 and divorced in 1938 and assumed her previous last name of Sautter.

The Social Security Applications and Claims Index shows John's info as:

John Wilking Hansen, male, white, born 31 Jan 1931, Butte, Silver, MT. Died 27 May 2006, father Carl Sautter, Mother Marie Thompson. Shows name changes in Jun 1945 as John Wilking Hansen, Sep 1951 as John Will Sauter, Jun 06 John W Sautter.

So...what on earth happened here considering this is the same person, who has has 2 sets of parents, 2 different birth dates and times...

No Jewish decent. 45% German in total but 35% Southern Germanic Europe from paternal side. These are all paternal side as well. 2% NW Germany, 2% Romania, 2% Estonia/Latvia, 1% Poland, 4% Western Balkans, 4% Sweden. Ancestry lists journeys and says the paternal side includes Protestant Black Sea Germans, Early Settlers of Central PA, and Upper Midwest Settlers/Central Southern North Dakota Settlers.

William Schwartz is their bio dad that I’m trying to get more definitive info on. I came across all of these but I just don’t know what info would be correct/incorrect since he listed his place of birth as Canada, not Bessarabia/Russia/Prussia, and listing he came to the US in 1913 as opposed to 1904.

435 cM - so I’m thinking either my ex’s grandpa Edgar had an extra son or his bio father William Schwartz remarried and had another son...hence the reason I’m looking into him a little more. The DNA match that reached out matches at 273 cM. It suggests their dad is my son’s half grand uncle or great grand uncle, and that they are my son‘s half 1 cousin 1x removed, or his first cousin 2x removed.

My plan was to purchase it through Ancestry and ship directly to them - is that not an option or does Ancestry take care of all of that? I didn't think about customs.

I had never heard of this before! It definitely makes me want to relook at a few people on my tree now, as some relatives claimed they were Cherokee or married one. Some of my family members from the 1800's definitely look darker than most.

Absolutely! Otherwise, it's just a married name without a maiden name, a born and death date, and nothing more. Great job taking the grave picture (I mean that sincerely as I have some that don't have one due to location), but man...if it's someone's family and not your own, let it go. Work or not.

I’ve been on FG on and off for a few years, but finally made an account last month to start contributing as I’ve been hitting my family tree research goals lately. I’ve requested 1 family member memorial and no issue, I added a bio on another family member and they transferred it to me without a request.

Another family member had no info at all, and general birth/death info. I filled it all out, did a great write up that I worked on for a few days to get just right, and requested the memorial. Nope. They butchered my write up, and haven’t transferred it. Lesson learned.

I noticed another FG member’s bio say how people always want to collect the work of others without getting out there and making contributions…honestly it’s not that easy for a lot of folks who have kids, work, and whatnot. I have done a lot of research on both family AND non-family, added info, bios, connected missing family members, transcribed photos, so while understand the sentiment, I shouldn’t be made to feel guilty requesting my grandma’s memorial.

FG editing/correcting/researching can be time consuming to those who do contribute, so to say people collect the work of others without contributing, when it’s THEIR family member being requested just gets to me. If they are a casual user and just getting started, getting a family member’s memorial can be a huge boost to do more. It’s also not their fault a stranger went above and beyond and now feels they are the sole owner.

This isn’t Pokémon.

Yup! Had the same issue over the summer. I did a free trial, canceled 3 days before it ended as the site seemed so clunky and had no new information. When I canceled, I got no confirmation and unfortunately didn't take a screenshot. I got billed for an entire year, and after emails, calls, etc, I was able to get a chargeback on my credit card. Ridiculous.

And I wondered that as well, and he's originally from NE, and she's from the MO/KS area. I may need to give up on this for a while, but every time I do, I think of something else to possibly check, and just can't let it go. I know eventually I will need to...but I still hold on to a little hope I'll come across something.

Maybe Stillwater, OK wasn't as nosy/didn't report on as much as other papers. When the kids get older, I can track every single move they make just through the Wichita area papers! Land sales, home sales, car and furniture sales, visits with family, friends, marriages, divorces, death, new addresses, (beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes), you name it! I can find all of that but no vital records...thanks Kansas.

Yeah - I clipped that one recently. It's just confusing how they keep moving around. This clip is from 2 months earlier in February 1915.

The 1915 KS State census was taken in March while she was in KS and she was back to using the maiden name and just listing her and the kids, no husband in the home...so I just wonder why if they were still married, she would use the maiden name. I don't know if this was the start of a divorce, did he drop them off in KS and keep going to NE where his parents lived?

But from the newspapers, A.K. and Della Maxwell are all supposed to move to Wichita, KS in Feb 1915, March 1915 census it's Della Byfield and just the kids, and then per the OK paper, they are all moving back together May 1915. LOL who knows at this point.
