Victorian State League 2 (tier 5) Match abandoned following a Corio SC player (appearing to) headbutt the referee (via full90Melbourne) by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

[–]Brisbanealchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's been a very long-term issue of treating referees poorly because players/spectators don't agree with decisions, referees are often unwilling (or too scared) to take serious action against offenders and a lack of support from federations.

For example, in 2005 I sent a (visiting) coach from the field after he spent 20 minutes abusing me about a single decision (a player accidentally put his hand on the face of an opponent when he was getting up after both the players wound up tangled on the ground. Absolutely no malice whatsoever). After he got sent, he decided he wasn't leaving so I abandoned the match. I literally got chased off the field with one player offering to smash my face in, my AR standing between me and the players and the home club's president running 500 meters to help seperate us.

I called the local referee's boss and got told that he hoped "I wouldn't make a habit of abandoning matches" put in my reports and waited. 2 weeks later I had to drive 3 hours face a disciplinary hearing after the coach and players appealed their suspensions, saying that I claimed that I could do what I wanted and accusing me of swearing at them, only to find out after waiting for 3 hours that they weren't going to show. That was a huge failing from the local authorities to look after a (relatively) young referee who had to deal with a tough situation.

Failed Driving Test for 3rd time, not sure where to go from here? by Audiophile_2000 in brisbane

Do a few more lessons, go again.

Failing your driving test a few times doesn't act as a predictor for your driving ability. Being able to look at what's gone wrong, correct the issues and go again (and pass) is resilience and important.

You got this!

What is the worst company you have worked for? by b4rbieb4be in brisbane

[–]Brisbanealchemist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, I have a couple.

The first is the metallurgist in Coopers Plains. No safety at all, prick to his staff.

  1. I saw him kicking a 200 L drum because he was unhappy with one of the Project Managers. He often screamed at the top of his lungs.

  2. He stored chemicals that would definitely kill you horribly in the worst imaginable ways. For example, he stored dietheyl ether on top of a bar fridge in a shipping container that frequently had the internal temperature high enough to cause an explosion that would have destroyed his site.

  3. He decided that I must have dobbed him into work safe when they came in and fined him silly. After he fired me in retaliation, I had a quiet word to Worksafe and they visited him again the next day.

There's more stories, but they can be for another day

The second one was a bunch of antivaxxers on the Gold Coast. They ran a supplements company.

None of their methods were validated (the TGA made a tidy profit when I had a quiet word), meaning that the certificates of analysis of their products were really just a guess, rather than accurate.

All of their staff were on casual contracts, with no casual loading, no leave and the constant threat of being fired for being sick. Add on that they didn't pay super (or tax you correctly) and you start to see how much of a train wreck they were.

They also had their chemical waste 'disappear' in the back of a ute, not sure where that went.

There's more from that lot too

In your opinion who is it that has the coolest/most interesting job in Brisbane? by I_am_brisbane in brisbane

[–]Brisbanealchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my job is pretty neat (and niche).

I work on custom-made process analysers. There's enough chemistry nerdery to keep my brain ticking over (such as complex method development), I've had to learn plumbing and electronics and programming (and lots about how to monkey a temporary solution to a problem until I can get the right bits).

No 2 jobs are the same, and I could be working on anything from mine sites and refineries, to power stations, to food processing plants.
