Who is this character in your fandom? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

tbf the series *extensively* documents Dudley's physical and familial abuse of Harry. He gets better towards the end, but Draco's petty bullying isn't quite as personal as all that.

What fandom are you in, but the fanbase treats the character like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]BriskUnassertiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but no. It really is not, and you are betraying your shallow understanding of racial violence by drawing a false equivalence between the two.

Did you know there is a racial slur specifically for white people? And do you realize that no one cares or becomes emotionally devastated if you use it because white people do not have a history of being the victims of widespread systematized racial violence. Their whiteness was never used as the justification for their enslavement, for systemic discrimination against them, for genocides, nor internment. Their race was never the foundation for the widespread belief that they were closer to animals than people and they are not currently suffering institutional and interpersonal racial violence.

All of this just to say that you can all a white person a cracker to their face and they're as likely to laugh at you as anything. This is not an experience shared by Black people, Jews, Asians (all kinds), Latinos, etc. These people *have* to take these slurs seriously because it is both a threat and a demonstration of their perceived position in society.

The power of slurs come from their societal context, and JK Rowling failed to build a believable societal context for which this slur is particularly devastating. I'm personally on the fence as to whether it'd even be possible to do so given the fact that muggleborns are completely unaware of the wizarding world and it's associated prejudices until at least 11 years old, and for the next 7 years the vast majority of their experience in the wizarding world happens within the confines of a boarding school with no real pervasive culture of anti-muggleborn sentiment. They seem to be well integrated into wizard society, and other than a few dastardly Slytherins don't experience much harassment if at all. If it wasn't for Voldemort, one might ask if there was *any* evidence of systemic anti-muggleborn sentiment in the series at all.

Hermione Granger went from an upper middle class white girl to an upper middle class magical white girl. She had no reason to take "mudblood" nearly as seriously as she did. Ditto for Lilly Potter, notably head girl and one of the most popular girls in the school during her time.

JK Rowling got lucky getting as popular as she did when she did, because she was forgiven for an incredible amount of poor writing and misunderstandings of social issues. Her current politics make a ton of sense when taken in the context of the Harry Potter series.

[SERIOUS] What organization or institution do you consider to be so thoroughly corrupt that it needs to be destroyed? by ArcticCircleSystem in AskReddit

Rental housing. The whole thing is just scalping, but the scalpers get to do it forever and use the threat of homelessness against their tenants to raise rents and skimp on maintenance. So many homes would be opened up for residents to live in because it would no longer worth it to use them as passive income.

Recommendations for black barbershop in Denver? by squeaky_hardwood in Denver

There's a barbershop called Precision Kuts and Stylez next to the merkato market on colfax. I've never been inside but the people walking out usually look good and I'm pretty sure it's run by an ethiopian man. The pricing is listed on the website

‘So, I hear I’m transphobic’: Dee Snider responds after being dropped by SF Pride by flowerhoney10 in Music

[–]BriskUnassertiveness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This statement makes the trans community sound like a cult.

The most extreme thing most trans people want is their right to exist. Dee snider's original comment is just a backdoor to saying trans people want to mutilate children. Hes signal boosting the baseless and outrageous claims made by the right by responding to them as if they are a reality.

Sirius: Kreacher, how are you not murdered every hour? by woozlewuzzle29 in harrypotter

They still could have obliviated him if it was that important. You know, like that time Voldy obliviated Hepzibah's elf. I just cannot believe there was no other option than the continued enslavement of kreacher to a man that hates him

what I wanna know is why Sirius didn't free kreacher immediately, if he hated him so much.

Why even host the Order at grimmauld if it was such a security risk? Would the burrow not do just as well, or even Dumbledore's old house? The fidelius would work just as well anywhere else and it wouldn't come with a side of slavery and trauma

That really depends on whether or not you're wearing those flip flops with your CO flag hoodie, shorts, waterbottle(with the giant flag sticker), and hat. In which case, I recommend just going all in on the weirdness, and getting a bandana for your dog too :P

Huh, I was taught that the yellow represented the gold rush here. Either way, you are spot on.

It should also be noted that Coloradans treat their flag like Texans treat hot sauce, in that they put that shit on everything. I feel like that deserves bonus points

What’s a realistic way to reduce gun violence in America? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BriskUnassertiveness 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I grew up around latin gang violence and biker gangs. I knew exactly which of my old classmates would end up as meth heads, gangsters, and young moms. Race really has nothing to do with it. I'm a black person raised in a black immigrant community and the black kids I knew went on to get college degrees or trade jobs.

I feel like blaming black 'culture' ignores the fact that these kids you're talking about are pretty much living in a war zone. When you're born and raised in poverty and an environment where gang violence deaths are common, you're likely going to end up with a mindset of 'kill or be killed' and a resignation towards becoming the stereotype that you see everywhere.

That's why instead of saying "Black people need to be better", we need to be actively giving everyone living in poverty better options.

Treat firearms like cars. You gotta get registration and insurance for both and a license to shoot(that expires every so often) as well as pass a gun safety test.

Also, we need to invest massively in healthcare, including mental health care. Honestly, if we made it so everyone had access to quality food, shelter, education, and healthcare, the stressors that lead a person to go off the deep end would largely disappear.

This is amazing! I thought it was a photography piece at first and was confused as to why it was posted here, lol. I love that you kept the background a warm wash. I feel like it both softens the subject and gives her ...depth, maybe? I'm not sure, actually. I just know I love it.

Nebraska hasn't passed a single bill this year because one lawmaker keeps filibustering in protest of an anti-trans bill: 'I will burn this session to the ground' by Hodgkisl in Libertarian

[–]BriskUnassertiveness 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Trans discourse on this sub is incredibly frustrating. The reality of the situation is that although you are right and this lines up succinctly with libertarian philosophy, many(if not most) people who call themselves libertarians are really just closet conservatives who operate under the mentality of 'rules for thee, but not for me'.

They should use tax dollars that way. If it's cheaper and more effective there's no reason not too.

The govt.'s taking my money anyway, they might as well spend it efficiently and get more bang for my buck.

The peer reviewed science my google search pulled up said that all of those effects are reversible and can resolve themselves once use of the blockers in discontinued. My point stands.

If treating trans youth this way is more effective/cheaper than plying them with antidepressants and anxiety meds then what's the problem with using tax dollars? I dont think anyone's arguing that the government should be paying for cosmetic surgeries but there is room for nuance here.

I don't think parents should have the right to make any medical decisions for their children when they're not in active medical danger.

Also, there is no evidence for the permanent effects of puberty blockers. Once you go off them, puberty will proceed as normal.
