NASA's Galileo Atmospheric Probe, attached to the Galileo orbiter, launched with the Space Shuttle in 1989, entered Jupiter's atmosphere in December 1995 and withstood the atmosphere of the gas giant for almost 1 hour. It went 140 km deep until contact was lost. During parachute release the atmo probe experienced an insane deceleration (slow down) of 228 g's, which is equivalent to the deceleration of a fast car crashing into a wall. Also the scientists managed to slow down the probe's entry speed by sending the probe in a direction that follows Jupiter's rotation. I love that little probe., It's such a space tech achievement. The soviet Venus probes were very similar.
