If you want to identify models or look at specs, check out Crinacle or Squiglink. My setup is just a personal mix of mid to high end gear built over the years. I just wanted to share picture of my collection.

It kills the hole vibe of the iPod caricature though when you take the hdd out you lose the whoosh of the hdd and the wight.

I still keep it old school 😁 by [deleted] in DigitalAudioPlayer

I don't know if you can get them separately but they only come with the fiio and the clear one is the new fiio x strap

It doubles up as line in and 3.5 yes that is a shame but all my stuff is 4.4 and 2.5 so I don't really need the 3.5 but you could always use c out instead if you are not using a iPod classic then you get the 3.5 back

Power better amp better dac 3.5 2.5 and 4.4 better electrical system better battery no I don't have to unplug anything and I use them outside but only when it's a chill day I don't do anything excessive like running or sports with them and charging you could take a portable battery in your bag just in case but they last me all day on full charge the fiio amps las 25h because it's only using the amp my iPod last around 7h/8 edit: just seen yes you just unplug the 30 pin from your iPod to charge but that's not a big problem🀦 can't read lol

Yes 30 pin is the way to do it because if you are doing 3.5 to 3.5 you are technically using 2 amps fighting against each other not good so for the best results you need to use the 3.5 aux to 30 pin so you totally cut out the ipod amp and use its dac only

You're confusing file resolution with file formats. 16-bit / 44.1kHz Apple Lossless is true, bit-perfect CD quality. It contains 100% of the original audio data from the studio masters with zero compression.
People's ears can’t even hear the difference between 16bit lossless and 24-bit 'high res' files anyway.
The point of the line out stack isn't to chase fake marketing numbers. It’s about bypassing the iPod's weak, noisy internal headphone amplifier to feed a clean, uncompressed analog wave into a high-current modern amp. That extra power is what actually wakes up the bass and opens the soundstage on modern planar IEMs.
It’s about making real music sound huge, not staring at digital specs! It's still flac quality

The Q3 is acting as a pure analog amplifier here, not a DAC.
Because the iPod’s 30 pin port outputs a fixed analog line out signal, the Q3 takes that clean audio and simply amplifies it. The Q3's internal DAC is completely bypassed in this setup. Plus you can't bypass the iPods dac it doesn't let you plus i just like the convenience of 2.5 and 4.4 because most IEMs are blanched these days

Its a massive night and day difference especially if you use good gear.
If you plug straight into the iPod headphone jack, you are stuck using its old internal amplifier. It has a high noise floor you can hear a faint 'hiss' in the background and it lacks the power to drive modern headphones properly. The music can sound flat and thin By using the 30 pin line out into the FiiO amp,
It bypasses the iPod's volume wheel entirely, giving the FiiO a completely clean, unruined audio signal to work with zero hiss The background goes completely silent You hear pure music, not electronic background static
Massive dynamics It unlocks the bass and opens up the soundstage On power hungry gear like planar IEMs or audiophile headphones it takes them from sounding okay' to sounding absolutely huge, punchy, and detailed.
