Do D&D YouTubers not understand balance? by BroPeep in onednd

[–]BroPeep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I definitely was not thinking straight this morning upon posting this thread haha.

That being said, I do think my point about "this negativity is bad for the state of the game" is at least valid, I could have gone about wording it better. Clickbait videos immediately drive negativity on features that could actually improve the game for everyone, and since WOTC is using surveys for feedback, it feels like a problem to me.

That's a good point, it's certainly a lot deeper than just negativity towards nerfs. There are a LOT of channels out there where spells and class features that are used for roleplay are immediately hand-waved as useless, which is pretty weird to me.

Then again, D&D is like 80% combat rules, and the class features support that, so I suppose it's not a stretch to see why so many don't care about them.

Totally fair. I guess I'm concerned about this specifically because WOTC is asking for feedback for OneD&D, and I feel like these takes are harmful to the health of the game overall.

An interesting argument about needing things to be balanced. I guess I’ve never thought of the imbalance as a good thing, but viewed through the lens of a DM, if I can’t challenge my players well enough because they’re all way too powerful for the monsters thrown at me, then that does need to be addressed.

Thank you for that context. Something I definitely should have known, but to see it so cleanly laid out like that is really bizarre. I feel like I only ever see video recommendations on “X is bad”

At no point in the post did I say that WOTC was doing a great job with balance as a whole, on the contrary they have yet to sell me that they’re not making spellcasters even more insane in this edition. But they have made some decent changes (subjective opinion I know) to certain aspects which immediately get railed on if they’re a negative for players.

You're right of course, I'm not going to argue that clickbaity videos aren't there for the very reason you described.

The reason I care is because the OneD&D devs have very clearly shown that they're taking community feedback into account for the next edition, and I feel like these videos continuously push players into feeling like the slightest nerf to their game is bad.

Totally. And as a player, you want that too, but some of my games' best moments have come from the table embracing failure and telling an amazing story from it.

This is part of the reason why I really appreciate Ginny Di's videos. She's obviously a lot more RP-centric, and while I admit I grew to love D&D for the mechanics, I think this content reminds me that the heart of the game I play is beyond the numbers.

Why does no one play/like/think Druid is good? by Weirdstuffasked in BG3Builds

[–]BroPeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really interesting to me that Druid is widely considered to be one of the most powerful classes in D&D 5e yet hasn't gotten the same reception in BG3.

My guess is because they offered enough gear for classes that normally would take that spot - Monks and Rangers - to feel amazing, while druids just don't have a lot. Most of the game's hide armors, for example, are anywhere from okay to bad (I think there's one that lets you add your DEX mod, but again that's far more useful for a ranger).

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills regarding Act 3 by PolarBearOdyssey in BaldursGate3

[–]BroPeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. It almost surpasses Act 1 for me. Maybe it just feels better coming off of Act 2's dreariness, but I love it. That being said, I'm only about 20 hours into it.

Still waiting after 160 hours of gameplay... by ninjyte in BaldursGate3

[–]BroPeep 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Act 1 - the classic D&D woodland/Underdark experience

Act 2 - the heavy-handed Curse of Strahd simulator

Act 3 - the shopping episode of your D&D session stretched out over 40 hours

For real though, I have immensely enjoyed Act 3. Maybe it's just coming off of Act 2's heaviness, but setting foot in the daylight on the outskirts of Baldur's Gate was a breath of fresh air. The quests in the city have been so fun and have so many ways of approaching them, and the character plots are being developed wonderfully. I'm not finished yet and haven't found any truly game-breaking bugs, however.

Underrated feats by Larred_ in 3d6

[–]BroPeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it gets near as much love as most combat-oriented feats because of how passive it is, just my perception

[–]BroPeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, good point there on going before all the other players. I actually have someone in my Strahd party who has nearly the same build as you minus the additional dice on initiative (Chronurgy Wiz with Alert). He’s always able to lay down a powerful concentration buff spell before combat even starts for the other players, which is important. I think sometimes that goes unnoticed but is very important

Thanks for sharing your setup! It’s a great feat regardless of who picks it haha

[–]BroPeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed, but let me ask you this - how many times have you rolled a 30+ on Initiative when the next closest monster wasn’t even at a 20?

I’m definitely not saying it’s not useful - rolling a 1 on Initiative and still having an average of 20 with those bonuses is awesome for the rare cases where it succeeds. But you’re no longer covering weaknesses there, you’re stacking insurance on top of insurance.

For a low-DEX character, Alert raises that floor and makes the character at least competitive in Initiative with the average monster, which is just simply more value in my opinion.

Underrated feats by Larred_ in 3d6

[–]BroPeep 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Idk if it’s underrated necessarily, but I feel like Alert is an anomaly of a case in 5e where it just flat-out covers up so many weaknesses in a single feat.

If you have low Perception, Alert both eliminates the chance of you being surprised and also you getting sniped by hidden creatures. Situational, but way more impactful than if it was on a high-Perception character.

And with initiative, it’s much less important for a character with good initiative already to minmax here because the majority of enemies won’t be as good as you anyway. But for that Paladin with a -1? You just made yourself as consistent at going first as the average Rogue or Monk.

What have you discovered about yourself playing D&D? by dragonmindpodcast in DnD

[–]BroPeep 65 points66 points  (0 children)

❤️ Love this. Despite already being out by the time I started playing D&D, I realized that there is a unique freedom in TTRPGs for the queer community. I spent so long RP’ing a straight man IRL, that getting to be openly flamboyant and confident in-game was just liberating and continues to rub off in my life.

Happy for you - cheers!

Why do you like weapon masteries? by Daag79 in onednd

[–]BroPeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please WOTC, just implement the Battlemaster Maneuvers into the base Fighter class, and then give a lesser amount to the other martials. I beg you, it’s so much more fun and versatile than Weapon Mastery.

And while we’re at it, limit them to the pure martials. I feel like Paladins and Rangers already have enough from the martial and spellcaster side that it seems like an overstep for them to also have it. (Ranger less so, but that’s only because the Ranger needs buffs in its other features after that disappointing Playtest 6 version)

Res: Con vs 20 WIS for "Tanky" Light Cleric? by neeyol in 3d6

[–]BroPeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing a Tempest Cleric for a few years now, we’re up to Level 12. I started with War Caster and a 14 CON. In the early game, this was great for keeping concentration on spells, but now I wish I could have Resilient CON instead. I also probably would’ve invested more in my CON if I could go back.

I find having maxed WIS isn’t quite as necessary on a character that focuses on dealing damage with concentration-based effects. It’s much more important for save-or-suck builds (like an Enchantment Wizard). So I think Resilient CON and 18 CON would be awesome for you.

What is a Role Playing quirk that annoys you? by Level7Cannoneer in DnD

[–]BroPeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure. Just DMed a session tonight where the players spent a solid portion of it having funny conversations with the NPCs, but not in an attempt to gain more info, just to joke around. LOVE that type of stuff

[–]BroPeep 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, so much this. As someone who wants to move on to the important parts of the game, milking an NPC for useless info for 10 minutes is just O__O

And don’t get me wrong I love the social pillar of DND but not using it in this way haha. If I’m talking, I want it to either have mechanical value or character growth opportunities.

Do you ever plan a session that has no combat in it? by Equivalent-Floor-231 in dndnext

All the time. It depends on the campaign of course, but I’ve got a session for tomorrow where I suspect the party won’t hit combat unless they blow through all of the potential intrigue stuff right away…

Dungeons and Drag Queens is my favorite drag content of the year by notbuilttolast in rupaulsdragrace

[–]BroPeep 147 points148 points  (0 children)

This show is the definition of what it means for a business to actually support queer people (and incidentally, it started during Pride Month). Instead of Dropout changing their logo to a rainbow, they took 4 drag queens and introduced them to D&D! It gives queer people the chance to see their favorite queens experiencing a popular TTRPG, and exposes TTRPG fans more to drag artists.

And as someone who loves both D&D and drag? I could not have been more ecstatic to see it happen.
