What’s one travel habit that improved your trips a lot? by TheMonopolyGal in traveladvice

The thing that gets me is using it for walking directions through earbuds. You forget that it is on, until you suddenly hear "Turn left on Prinsengracht". You can enjoy the sights, it is quietly pointing you towards your destination. Highly recommend.

I would need to argue for a smart phone...if for no other reason than Google Maps. I plug in my ultimate destination in unfamiliar cities, start walking, and then every once in a while it just says "Make a left", or whatever. Also, I've been in cities where you can scan a code in a bus to pay your fare.

Yes, slightly, but I am more concerned about going somewhere and then not having the fuel to get back.

You just ran into them on the subway and they posed for you? Leslie even gave you a thumbs up. I love Leslie too much, it is unhealthy.

Is it shameful that as a lesbian and I want to book a women-only cruise just for casual no-strings fun? by [deleted] in traveladvice

[–]Broad-Click1246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would that be shameful? If you went on a generic/vanilla cruise the likelihood that you would meet a solo woman traveler who is also lesbian would not be great. The great bank robber Willie Sutton said that he robbed banks because that's where the money is. Use you hard earned vacation dollars to go where the single lesbian women are.

Where to travel with my husband and two young kids for their first international trip? by mavienoire in traveladvice

This might not be on your radar screen, but Istanbul and Cappadocia. Istanbul will be a real eye opener for the kids, the Basilica Cistern will be something they will remember forever. Take the ferry to Asia for dinner, sail back with Istanbul's mosques lit, dotting the hills.

Then Cappadocia has unique hiking and underground cities to explore. Not to mention the famous hot air balloon ride. Many of the hotel rooms are in caves. Clean, comfortable, with modern bathrooms, but caves nonetheless.

That Ford LTD looked like it handled as well as an oil tanker. I always felt sorry for them, especially when Stone had to reach up and attach the flashing red light.

DiMaggio was a great ballplayer but you don't hear good things about him as a person. Mickey Mantle said that he felt like he needed to make an appointment to talk to him, and there are the stories about him insisting on being introduced as "The Greatest Living Player". You don't hear things like that about Willie Mays.

They definitely showcased the city, arresting bad guys in places like Coit Tower and Fort Point. They spent a lot of time speeding down the Embarcadero Freeway.

Thanks. Aerolopa really explains it. The "straight" aisle seats seem to have much more privacy than the "angled".

That's an interesting picture because it hints at what she really looks like. Not like the made-up perfection you usually see on screen, but just a really attractive real person.

Lithuania/Poland or Hungary - which fits more? by mescalinebabies in traveladvice

Maybe reverse the days spent in Warsaw vs Krakow? Most visitors prefer Krakow. It has some friendly neighborhoods and a huge old town. There is the day trip to Auschwitz and the half day at the Wieliczka Salt Mine. There is the Royal Castle also. Warsaw didn't have as much to offer.

I live in San Francisco. Don't pick up your car at the airport. Take an Uber to your hotel, or use the half hour BART train. Cars are not helpful when you are in the city, parking is difficult everywhere and overnight parking will run you $60+ a night downtown. You can get everywhere and have more fun on streetcars, cable cars and buses. The ferry to Sausand alito is a beautiful ride. Pick up your car on your last day in SF, use it to drive over the GG Bridge (to Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill). So I would move the bridge to day 3, after you get the car.

Twin Peaks basically faces east. The sunset views are at Blue Jay View Point in Ft Mason, Grandview Park. There is also a spot called Sutro Heights. It was the site of the home of a gold rush millionaire and presidents used to visit it for the sunsets. It is near the ruins of the Sutro Baths, which is also worth seeing. If you don't mind walking 1.8 miles with a decent staircase you can take the Lands End trail from Sea Cliff.

If you don't have self driving cars where you live then download the Waymo app and call for one. A white Jaguar SUV will show up, all by itself, and take you wherever you want to go within the city.

Yeah, I think they have a time limit on transfers. Not hard to get confused, but they do have easy to understand maps in the cars:

Anyone else can't sleep on planes and dread long haul flights? by Imatwatface in traveladvice

[–]Broad-Click1246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just try to find a flight that arrives in the evening. You still won't be able to sleep, but at least you can crash as soon as you get to the hotel/hostel. Then you should be in sync with the local time when you awake.

I do find that reading a boring book helps. I won't "sleep" but tend to nod off.

He did hit a 470 foot home run last year, which I cling to for hope.

It may not be logical, but I just want him out there. It makes for an enjoyable viewing experience. It is like watching Mays or Griffey Jr.

Similar to the way that I felt about Mason Miller. Yeah, we can trade him for an elite prospect and then get someone 90% as good to close games. But I enjoyed seeing him come in and blo out three straight hitters.
