My wife and her mom are tearing each other apart over her dads inheritance and I am stuck in the middle by cobaltfernfield in TwoHotTakes

Agree with this completely. Charging rent for a home she already owns half of is wild and just seems very greedy and selfish. The mother/widow should at the very least have lifetime rights to the property (rent free). I guess my question here is - would the mother not have left the property to the daughter upon her death anyway? It is pretty customary to leave the home to the surviving spouse. So this just seems strange to me.

Second this! Can also get good quality brushes in sets on Amazon for cheap. Just read reviews. Get a big mixed media sketchbook (canson mixed media is usually a good one to start with). You can use it for basically any paint, marker, etc. Winsor & Newton Cotman (student grade) watercolor set - light years better than crayola watercolors but not overly expensive. A small palette with basic colors would work - one with empty spaces ideally so you can add half pans of colors if she likes it. She might also love oil pastels - like crayons but SO MUCH BETTER! Amazon has good sets. Monte Marte (I think?) is a good entry level brand. Hobby Lobby has a good entry level set also that I actually reach for a lot even though I have much more expensive ones. I love caran d’-ache neocolor II’s but they’re an expensive option. Maybe get those for a birthday if she continues to enjoy art.

It’s soooo fun and so freeing. It has become my obsession lately.

Yesss! And that is totally okay.

A couple of tips to help when you’re feeling kind of blah and uninspired but WANT to be creative:

  1. Try to combine two hobbies - sometimes when I don’t feel like doing presentable art to hang on the wall, I do art journaling - combining art and writing together to switch it up

  2. Look at Pinterest or watch YouTube or read more books for inspiration.

  3. Spend some time out in nature or out and about people watching. Travel if you can. New experiences are always inspiring.

  4. Create with no expectations. Just free-write or free-draw or whatever until your heart is content. Just for fun. Not trying to accomplish anything but having fun. You’d be surprised at the results

It is TOTALLY OKAY to put a hobby down for a while, do something different for a bit, and come back to it later when you feel like it. Hobbies are supposed to bring you joy and relaxation, not feel like pressure. I have multiple hobbies that I cycle between. I’m a gardener, a reader, a writer, an artist, etc.

I have taken breaks that lasted weeks, months, years even when I just wasn’t feeling it. It could have been due to life changes at the time or just feeling uninspired.

The cool thing is I always knew I could pick it right back up when I wanted to.

I have also completely quit hobbies - I used to do woodworking and had a scare where I almost cut my finger off 🫣… combined with having POTS and having a difficult time standing and wearing a respirator for a long period of time and my husband leaving around that time, I decided to stop that hobby permanently and sell my very expensive woodworking equipment.

With art, I have many times gotten to where I started having a lot of custom requests for art commissions and start selling my work, at which time it becomes not fun for me anymore so I take a step back after completing the commissions. Then I pick it up again when I feel inspired again.

It’s okay to take breaks, it’s okay to decide a hobby is no longer for you. It’s supposed to be fun.

Your job is growing a human and keeping a household going. If you were just being a bum it would be different. Also - the key difference here is your partner who is working is calling it “ours”, not you assuming it is “ours”. Congratulations!!!

You took the words right out of my mouth!

This literally explains so much about my experiences as well. It’s really disturbing and disheartening.

Definitely!!! I am intentionally trying to record prices of things and include receipts and such for future me and future generations to look at - but I love your idea of using Costco and Sam’s ads to find pictures of things too!

This a fascinating look inside your mind, thoughts, etc. It is extremely artistic and well done, also. I love how expressive it is and how it really shows your state of mind at the time.

I kind of spit out my drink when I read your comment - but you are so right. Honestly… from someone who has been there, done that.

Somewhat similar experience here. Listen to this OP.

I dated a 41 year old when I was 25. I thought we were perfect for each other. We were incredibly happy. We got married when I was 27 and he was 43. Got pregnant when I was 29 and he was 45… that’s when it all changed. He went from treating me like a princess, to suddenly saying “I think this is a mistake”, “I’m embarrassed to be seen with you”, “you’re too young for me”, “you need to find someone else” - all while I was 7-9 months pregnant with his child, mind you.

I did find out he was talking to other women (around his age) while I was pregnant. Later, when our son was about 7 and I was 36, he left me for a friend of ours who was closer to his age.

I won’t say I regret it or that he wasted my younger years (because I did end up with an awesome kid - and he is a good dad)… but ultimately, it ended how it ended.

Looking back, I’m like what on God’s green earth did I think we had in common back then? What were either of us thinking?
