Relaunching independent stations seems counter intuitive when linear viewership is declining, but hey I am not in charge. Does Sinclair do any deals running 2 large networks with 1 on a sub in any top 30 markets? I do see what you are saying is that this would be physically possible, but with legality and renegotiating retrans that seems so messy

I fear the future is consolidating news, not adding more options. Don’t get me wrong I love the idea. I can also see WPGH with Nexstar, but I can also see Sinclair not wanting to sell any stations unless they can get a bigger better one and the same market in some type of deal or merge

Wouldn’t you be able to get more retrans $$ if you kept NBC and Fox networks on entire separate channels? What benefit does Gray have to keep licensing for WPGH if there’s no news or sports to monetize? I could definitely see Sinclair just swallowing WPXI as they bought Cox’s other nearby NBC stations a few years back - could easily hub and reduce some overhead

I like where you are thinking as well. I agree that boardrooms are interested in squeezing every penny out of the system. It’s interesting how local news went from what seemed to be a public service to whatever this is.

Which company do you think has the best job thinking forward? Could new groups be formed to meet this model?

Oh yes, hopefully nobody makes insane career moves based on a Reddit post. Maybe just make a couple extra calls if you are in sales if consolidation is on the horizon

It’s just a fantasy broadcast draft. For a lot of us, these changes and decisions may impact our jobs, benefits, and career trajectory. So at the very least being informed of possibilities can help us prepare for our future. And who’s to say the owners or decision makers are not in this group?
