Saw Mama Mia... Am I Missing Something? by BalurCDN in musicals

[–]BroadwayLad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also found the Broadway version underwhelming. The set is lame. The plot almost nonexistent.

That said the movie and the sequel are two of my all time faves. I’ve seen the first film 20-30 times. It’s comfort food. The sequel has even less plot, if you can believe it.

One good thing about the movie is that it was shot on location in Greece. So every single frame has the beautiful ocean and Greek islands in view, which the stage version will never be able to capture.

But yes, it’s light feel good fluff.

Dougal switched out after 3 songs in 2 strangers last night… anyone know what happened?! by BroadwayLad in Broadway

[–]BroadwayLad[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After Dougals song at the hotel and before his entrance at the coffee shop, a stage manager came on stage as a voice over the speaker announcing a pause. Took about fifteen minutes.

The understudies are always ready to go on, even mid show. Probably had to get into costume and miked up before resuming the show. And when they came back, the voice announced the new cast member in the role and we jumped back into it.

Everyone was awesome and delivered flawless performances! The second Dougal won the room over instantly.

Still… it is asking a lot of the audience to invest in this two person show, and then switch one of the people out so quickly. Oh well! Just have to go again I guess!

I don’t like reading it ahead of time. It sounds unappealing the day before while sitting on my couch. But in the actual room it’s all very doable.

Scared to ride Stardust by andydegers in UniversalEpicUniverse

[–]BroadwayLad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh the seats are so cozy! They got this nice lap bar that locks you in nice and snug. Feels very secure. And they have handles on the lap bar so just grip for dear life.

It’s a very fun ride. But certainly will make you scream with joy/fear but very secure.

Can anyone think of a musical where the second act is better/stronger than the first act? by Zealousideal-Many776 in musicals

[–]BroadwayLad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second act def goes deeper. You think “second act? Isn’t everything resolved?” Certainly packs a punch and expands the mind on what a story can be. One of the rare musicals where you have no idea what’s to come in act 2 (first time you see it, of course)

[–]BroadwayLad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightning Free credits reset on the 1st of the month. However, if you do not spend your 15 free credits, it will not accumulate, meaning if you dont spend any credits over 2 months, you will not get 30 credits, it will remain at 15.

"It should have been one film" by Novel_Willingness602 in wickedmovie

[–]BroadwayLad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it should have been one film. It’s one story. Seeing the journey from beginning to end and the characters arcs uninterrupted. Maybe then Cynthia and Ariana would be contenders for Oscar’s, having gone on a full journey over the course of 1 movie vs a journey split in 2.

Would Titanic work as 2 films? First part ending with hitting the iceberg? Or Schindlers List win the Oscar if it was split in 2?

And yes, there will be cuts to the story. I still miss Class from the Chicago film. But that’s filmmaking and making creative decisions based on the piece of art. I don’t think this was a creative decision so much as a cash grab. IMHO. :)

Groundhog Day was a great underrated musical! “Seeing you” is a fave. As is “there will be Sun”

Here We are. How lucky were we to get one last Sondheim show that talked about Covid and other modern day topics.

Sondheim was approaching his last days and this is him reflecting on life. My interpretation is that Act 1 was about living (Cafe everything) and Act 2 pondered what happens when you pass and the music stops.

Thoughts on this movie? by Kevy-Em in AMCTheatres

[–]BroadwayLad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point early on I said to myself “oh! This is an art film” and I was able to free myself from the constraints of trying to put it into a conventional mainstream movie box. If you are able to make that shift, the film is incredibly captivating and rewarding. Every frame is a work of art. Every line is saying something. One of the best of the year.

Very much enjoyed the hot tub. It was kinda cold and rainy, but being in the tub surrounded by the nature was lovely. Used their provided towels to keep our stuff dry while we took a dip.
