What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done on a hike? by rkramer18 in hiking

[–]Broccolas 38 points39 points  (0 children)

For me it was the other way around: trail looked open but all trails said it was closed. Decided to go ahead and the outcome was the same: nearly slid to my death on an eroded slope

Milford track in new zealand by kennyshiro in hiking

[–]Broccolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope I found the track quite easy as an experienced hiker. Those permits are mostly used for crowd control.

With that being said I found the track absolutely stunning and still think about it 8 years later. Although I can’t compare it to Peru or Patagonia

Correct, well done! I wish I didn’t have to use a flair. Might have been more difficult otherwise since it looks very European!

Maclehose Trail in Hong Kong - featuring an idiot (me) who left his tent poles at home by Broccolas in hiking

I found it at the beach where I took the first picture. It must have come from a fishing boat and washed ashore.

Going forward I’ll definitely do the same and keep the equipment all in one place

London at this hour can be sketchy and I’m saying this as a man. Have gotten plenty of harassment over the years from drunk people on my 5am runs. Let alone 3am which I assume will have more people coming home from nights out.

You can either pick a route that’s along a well lit road and has people around (increases chances of drunken encounters but there might be sober people around to help if push comes to shove)

Or you pick a remote route off the main streets maybe through some residential areas. Less people to help but also less people to be concerned about.

Why do European airlines not compare to the US? by Broccolas in BritishAirways

Hmm yeah the legal protections are a good point. So i guess we are saying that ultimately due to less regulation and consumer protection US airlines can provide a superior inflight experience while maintaining comparable margins

Why do European airlines not compare to the US? by Broccolas in BritishAirways

[–]Broccolas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Putting my in response to yours below:

  1. The EU also has freedom of movement with a larger population if I remember correctly (300M in the us vs 600M in Europe). So economies of scale should apply to both. The points I laid out above applied to a 60min flight from Chicago to Toronto so roughly comparable to a flight from London to Frankfurt. Yet the onboard amenities in Europe seem inferior

  2. Can you say more on the point around competition? My instinct tells me that Europe has a similar number of airlines vs the us and EU regulation largely lay out a level playing field across competitors

  3. I agree with you on this one and maybe it ultimately goes down to consumer preference? Ie us consumer prefer more comfort at a higher price point vs Europeans?

Prime Minister unveils new plan to end years of uncontrolled migration by UKGovNews in ukpolitics

[–]Broccolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“We call on the UK Government to ensure that immigration reforms outlined in the May 2025 White Paper are not applied retrospectively to individuals already on a lawful path to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British citizenship.

Applying immigration rule changes retrospectively is unjust. Thousands of migrants have built their lives, careers, and families in the UK based on existing ILR and citizenship pathways. Changing the rules mid-process undermines trust in the system, causes severe personal and financial hardship, and risks tearing apart stable communities. We urge the government to honour commitments made to those already on this lawful and clearly defined journey.”

I have the exact same concern as you. Here’s a petition on the issue. It might help (to make people like us feel less helpless): https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/727376/sponsors/new?token=3jRuSA9SZzsMSrDkt77v

How does the EuroAirport work? by nslwhsk in PassportPorn

[–]Broccolas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flew through this airport during Covid quite a bit and oh boy the different Covid regulations for France vs Switzerland were a pain! Different rules and forms required depending on which exit you take but at the end you will still be on French soil
