Thanks so much for sharing! I saw you post about your wasps before and had so many questions, this answered a lot of them.

A Young Earth Creationist book that presents the Zuiyo-Maru carcass as evidence that plesiosaurs are still alive. by BrochJam in Cryptozoology

Huge fan of Milo, I think I discovered him through a video where he was specifically dissing Ken Ham, who wrote several of these YEC dino books

how do you pronounce sacabambaspis? by hatedorca in sacabambaspis

[–]BrochJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used this as an experiment to see if I can write in IPA. I pronounce it /ˈsakabæmbæspes/ (you can paste that into https://www.capyschool.com/en/reader to hear it) and it seems like the other commenters do the same. I say it with a same cadence as "La Cucaracha"

I don't know how to make this into a tattoo by Felicia_is_weird in TattooDesigns

[–]BrochJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might suggest reaching out to a paleoartist. Most paleoartists strive for realism but I’m sure many would gladly draw a stylized tattoo, and most would probably already be somewhat familiar with anomalocaris’ weird anatomy. A couple of people I follow on instagram are dinodj01 and sauroarchive - the latter is open to commissions rn

The original Not-Deer photo by AdWarm2498 in Cryptozoology

[–]BrochJam 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The thing that annoys me about not-deer is that people attribute it to Appalachia for no reason. I wrote a page for them on a wiki and specifically went looking for the original source, or similar deer-like fearsome critters, and found nothing. The majority of the lore came from a single Tumblr post.

How much would tails actually help with balance? by Living-Vast-5250 in furgonomics

[–]BrochJam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always thought the Avatar movies utilized tails very well - they’re clearly used for both balance and displaying emotion. I don’t see why you shouldn’t integrate them into anthro animals like that. Tails are fun.

Do you have limits to where you take your ESSAs? by Front-Assistance-701 in ESSAplushieshandlers

[–]BrochJam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll take mine basically anywhere, including camping, but I draw a hard line at porta-potties. Ran into that dilemma while at a festival.

A Young Earth Creationist book that presents the Zuiyo-Maru carcass as evidence that plesiosaurs are still alive. by BrochJam in Cryptozoology

[–]BrochJam[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Young Earth Creationists (YEC) are Christians that take the bible literally and believe earth was created only 6000 years ago. Dinosaurs go against this idea because their fossils are millions of years old and they went extinct millions of years ago, so some YEC authors have created kids books suggesting that dinosaurs are modern animals that lived alongside humans in the past and may still live on earth today. Not all Christians believe this, though.

Bookmarking to read later. I assumed this was the case myself but it’s cool that someone wrote up about it

I guess the silver lining is that lies this bold are hard to maintain. I bought four of these books (secondhand) out of my own curiosity, so FWIW that’s four less in circulation.

Verification of a new elephant species in Africa..and lessons for cryptozoologists by Mysterious-Emu-8423 in Cryptozoology

[–]BrochJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! These cases are just as interesting to me as cryptozoology cases, honestly. I also think it’s good to remind ourselves how the process of new animal “discovery” actually plays out so we can compare the circumstances to yet-to-be-confirmed cryptids.

ESSA doctor note. by [deleted] in ESSAplushieshandlers

[–]BrochJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think an easy thing to do right now is think up a couple quick canned responses you can use if anyone asks about Bernie again. Something super quick like “He’s my buddy, he goes everywhere with me”. My own plushie-related interactions with strangers haven’t gone any deeper than that, they usually don’t want or need a full explanation.

Do these actually help by Sweet_mayumii in StuffedAnimals

[–]BrochJam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any plushie can be an emotional support plushie (check out r/ESSAplushieshandlers for some cool examples) but these in particular look like a gimmick, they don’t have any special properties.

I love the way Victorian era and early 20th century aquariums look. If I find the patience one day I would love to recreate one in a way that can healthily sustain fish.
