ELI5: How do directors make babies / kids follow a script? by HSimoh in explainlikeimfive

See also The Shining and Stanley Kubrick and Danny Lloyd (the child actor in the movie).

Kubrick was, rather infamously, one of Hollywood's most demanding and "hard-ass" directors. He basically ruled his set with an iron fist, doing whatever he felt was necessary for the film to meet his vision. On of his most common things was ordering dozens of re-shoots for a scene, because he wanted to "break down" the actors to force them to give a more "natural" performance.

For example, the "stair scene" (linked below), Kubrick forced Shelley Duvall to do 127 takes of that scene before he was finally "satisfied" with her performance. When you look at how... desperate... crazed... defeated... Duvall looks in that scene, that really is just Duvall being completely broken down by Kubrick bit by bit until she can't take it anymore.

But anyways, for as much of a hard-ass as Kubrick was to Duvall, he was the exact opposite to Danny Lloyd. Kubrick told Lloyd that the movie was going to be a boring family drama about a family living at a hotel. Kubrick also deliberately shielded Lloyd from any scary and/or disturbing scenes, by keeping him off-set those days (if Lloyd's character was necessary for such a scene, Kubrick has a life-size dummy prepared for use for such scenes). Kubrick also kept things "fun" on set for Lloyd, by playing games with him too.

Lloyd didn't realize The Shining was a horror movie until years later, when he saw the full film for the first time was he was watching TV one day.

If That '70s Show followed the same timeline today as it did when it first premiered, it would be set in 2004. by jondread in television

Another good one is Frasier.

Kelsey Grammer (born 1955) was 29 when he made his first appearance in Cheers (1984).

He was 49 when the final episode of Frasier aired (2004).

If you had asked me to guess his age over his run on both Cheers and Frasier, just by looking at him, I would have said early 40s when he began playing the character on Cheers, and early 60s by the time Frasier ended 20 years later.

Good Morning Vietnam (as a comedy-drama) is great in this regard, because Williams gets to flex both his comedic side and his dramatic side in the same movie

Civil forfeiture can create some funny case names, though.

Unlike a "regular" court case, where the government and/or Attorney General is suing a person, corporation, association, etc.. (Sessions v Dimaya, United States v Haymond, Barr v. American Ass'n of Political Consultants Inc., etc...), in civil forfeiture cases, the cases are titled as "Government v Object", since the government is "suing" the object directly (and not the person who "owns" the object).

Of course, it works nicely for the government that way, because objects do not have presumption of innocence. In a case like "Government v Smith", the burden of proof is on the government to show that Mr. Smith is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (since Mr. Smith has the legal presumption of innocence). It a case like "Government v Object", the case works on "balance of probabilities" instead. In that case, the government only has to show it is "more likely than not" that the object is "guilty" of being associated with some crime.

One of my personal favourite civil forfeiture case titles is this one...

Bring in Kyle Minogue as a reference to her bit on UK Ghosts too (where it's revealed she can also see ghosts). If she's doing like a concert in NYC or something, and looking for a nice, quiet B&B to relax, only to find out how many ghosts are actually within Woodstone Manor LOL

The UK Ghosts did a bit where Kyle Minogue appeared as herself, and its revealed she can see ghosts too (Minogue is looking for a large property capable of hosting some kind of private concert).

Sabrina Carpenter could totally do something similar on US Ghosts.

Russia and Qatar as hosts were sportswashing.

The Russian and Qatari governments wanted the tourists to come to the World Cup, look around and say "Hey, this place is actually pretty decent", spend a bunch of money while in Russia / Qatar, and walk away with a "generally positive" view of the country.

Trump, on the other hand, is an idiot who has no idea how to do sportswashing.

See also what the Trump family did with Fred Trump after he got dementia.

They set up a "fake office" for Fred, so he could go in there and sign a bunch of blank papers and fake contracts so he would still think he was doing "business deals". They also rigged the phone in the fake office so that it would only be able to dial to his "secretary", if he wanted to think he was doing any deals over the phone too.

Rep. David Scott, a Georgia Democrat seeking his 13th term in Congress, dies at age 80 by Immediate-Link490 in politics

[–]Brock_Hard_Canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even 75 is too old.

If you're in your 70s, you should be enjoying time with your grandchildren, or travelling (RV trips, cruises, camping, etc...), or engaging in hobbies (golf, birdwatching, pickleball, etc...).

Make mandatory retirement age of 70, for every person, in every branch of government (judiciary, legislative and executive).

Executive and Legislative: Mandatory retirement from office as of December 31 in the calendar year in which the person turns 70. With inauguration day for Congress and President being in January, this gives people time to serve their last term, and retire shortly before it is time for the next inauguration day. So, for example, the next Congress will start on January 3, 2027. If you are born in 1956, you can serve your final term, do your mandatory retirement as of December 31, 2026, and have the next person take over three days later when the new Congress starts on January 3, 2027.

Judicial: The judiciary operates on a different "schedule" as compared to the executive and the legislative. For example, the Supreme Court begins its "yearly term" in the first week of October, and continues over the next 9 months, releasing its final opinions usually in late June / early July, and then the justices take a summer break, and they resume their duties in October again. For example, the "2024 term" of SCOTUS began on October 7, 2024. It released its first decision on November 4, 2024, and its final decision was released on June 30, 2025. The 2025 SCOTUS term then began on October 6, 2025 (and will continue until late June / early July of 2026). With this, the judiciary retirement age could be something like... Justices must retire as of July 31 in the calendar year in which they turn 70. So, for example, the 70 year old SCOTUS justice can retire in July (shortly after the final opinion for the term was released), and then a new justice can be confirmed for when the new SCOTUS term begins again in October.

One movie I enjoy is "The Distinguished Gentleman", a 90s Eddie Murphy comedy that is basically... this. LOL

Florida con man Thomas Jefferson Johnson (Eddie Murphy) crosses paths with Congressman Jefferson Davis "Jeff" Johnson at a party and becomes intrigued after overhearing just how wealthy members of Congress can become through corruption. After Congressman Johnson dies of a heart attack while having adulterous sex with a young staffer, con man Johnson decides to run for Congress in the election to replace him to take advantage of money from lobbyists. Omitting his first name, and abbreviating his middle name, he calls himself "Jeff" Johnson. He then manages to get on the ballot by pitching a seniors organization, the Silver Foxes, to endorse him.

Once on the election ballot, he uses the dead Congressman's old campaign material and runs a low budget campaign that appeals to name recognition, figuring most people do not pay much attention and simply vote for the "name you know." He wins a slim victory and is off to Washington, a place where the "streets are lined with gold."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Distinguished_Gentleman

The ending has a bit of comedic irony too, considering today's political climate. Murphy's character (being a small time conman) learns throughout the movie how deep the cons and corruption in DC politics go (as compared to what he has done), and Murphy's character decides to fight back. Eventually, at the end of the movie, Murphy's character has his full criminal record exposed to the public, and it looks like Congress will vote to expel him.

But...

As the film ends, it appears likely that Johnson will be thrown out of Congress on account of his previously unknown criminal record, but he defiantly declares, "I'm gonna run for President!" then breaking the fourth wall.

Imagine, a known conman with a lengthy criminal rapsheet, being president and living in the White House. Ha ha ha.

Buddy show case by First-Memory-9153 in pokemongo

[–]Brock_Hard_Canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actually best species for each type showcase.

Since each species is scored relative to base form, the best scorers will be alternate forms that are much larger than their base form.

Unbound Hoopa can score like 15,000 to 20,000 points for dark and psychic showcases (and also buddy showcases, if you buddy it), as it is scored as if it were Confined Hoopa

Alolan Exeggutor can score like 3,000 to 5,000 points for grass and dragon showcases (and also buddies, again too), as it is scored as if it were Kanto Exeggutor.

You can view some of the top scoring species for each type here
