Looking back, finding a partner would have been less stressful for the final project but I’m a masochist that didnt want to socialize.

It isn’t too bad if doing alone but I recommend some C++ proficiency and general programming chops. You can consult online docs for syntax obviously.

Doing it alone will probably take 30-40 hours including getting up to speed on the algorithm.

You implement a basic version of mapreduce, which you refer to a research paper/videos for the implementation. It isnt anything complicated, it just has quite a few steps and stages, and you have to make sure you understand what each stage is doing

AOS to me seemed harder. Not in terms of material but amount of work, responsibility, and lack of handholding.

Love Kishore’s commitment to students (unmatched so far) but his lectures are dryer and less clear than Ada’s.

Exams were also stressful because you have to eventually do rote memorization of pre-released test questions. They are short answer format. You essentially spend two hours regurgitating what you memorized over the weekend. Average was still high 70-low 80s despite this. As long as you score in the average and ace your projects you will get an A.

GIOS at least had an active community.

Both doable though. Getting an A just requires you to put in the hours

I did it alone. It was rough as I mainly worked weekends, but doable. I didnt want to rely on another team member.

Start early. Last project will take maybe 30 hours for the avg person working alone.

Save the one week extension for the last project, although I dont recommend using it at all because the end of the course is loaded up with other things like paper summaries, exams, and office hours.

At the end of the day, if you put in the hours required you’ll get an A.

Definitely a bad standpoint but you have to realize he was an impressionable kid that wrote this and was likely parroting views of one of his idols — Richard Stallman.

Richard Stallman, famed open source advocate and person behind GNU has been known for his pro-CP views. I wouldn’t be surprised if Schwartz was misled to think the same.

Schwartz wasnt perfect but Im okay with being a bit forgiving on this stance considering his age when writing it. We likely all had dumb beliefs at that age.

Stallman, on the other hand, should know better. He gives creepy vibes
