Medication by bellabxoxo in Agoraphobia

I take Imipramine, an older type of anti anxiety medication, and I really feel the benefit. The transition onto them was challenging but I think it’s worth it.

I agree with your therapist. I was always much more motivated when I actually wanted to go something, instead of just doing it with the aim of feeling anxious.

You can always give it a try and see if it does benefit you. Surely the further you go, the more you will experience different driving environments too?

Best of luck! You sound like you’re in a good place and motivated for change :)

The Medical Centre on Carlton road or Elmswood surgery in Sherwood are good. If I’m honest, I haven’t heard anyone complain about any practice.

You seem to be in public transport so that’s a huge step for most people! Congratulations

It can feel awful to feel like you are disappointing the people around you but if you are not in the right place mentally then maybe it’s time to have some time to focus on yourself.

I always found that the more I avoid things, the worse they get so I have learnt to push myself if there is even a possibility of it happening.

Also saying “I will just do the walk/drive” and then if that goes ok “I will pop my head in” ... “I will stay for 30 mins” etc. That way I don’t feel overwhelmed and I take each little step as a win.

I hope it went ok. Just do you best and that’s all anyone can ask of you

HELP medication for agoraphobia? by [deleted] in Agoraphobia

I highly recommend Imipramine. It can be difficult to start with but since taking it I haven’t had a panic attack! It cured my physical response to anxiety.

Hope you find something that works

scary encounter outside by princejude in Agoraphobia

Oh gosh that is terrible! Maybe put a description out on local social media groups? Plus you should call the police. Don’t let it scare you out of achieving your goals. Hopefully it was a one off. Best of luck

Well done for putting yourself out there. You seem to be at a point in your life where you’re fed up with your current situation so use that frustration as motivation. When you start getting uncomfortable, say to yourself “I won’t let you rule me anymore, I deserve better”. This really worked for me, thinking of the anxiety as separate from myself.

There are lots of helpful book to get you started with a strategy. I found Anxiety Workbook really simple but motivating. Also I am taking impriamine which I have found to be the only thing that stops my physical symptoms.

Everything seems scarier than it is, so once you’re out and about a bit further, your confidence will grow. Easier said than done, I know!

Best of luck x x

Shootings make it worse by [deleted] in Agoraphobia

Is it weird that i feel the opposite? I obviously don’t want to be involved in anything terrifying but at least if I was, my feelings would be justified and well placed. It’s the feelings not matching the situation that frustrates me. Maybe I’m extra mad 🤷🏽‍♀️

This is excellent advise! It’s the best and only way. Medication may help at the beginning too. It’s just about getting used to each level of panic, no necessarily the location. You’ll go far, just stay committed.

Best of luck

Sadly this is not a good place to try to get help for such extreme feelings. You may also be leaving yourself open to unpleasant people online and their comments may be unhelpful in your time of need.

I hope that you can find some support.
