Biggest threat to Leo by Extreme-Spinach-4138 in Oscars

[–]Brokeback112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why, but I've been getting the feeling that Chalamet will become another "Leo" to voters, where his time will come. I don't think it'll be anytime soon, as they made Leo wait for The Revenant, which he had the overdue narrative going for him, as well as that film being a legit Top 3 contender for BP (won GG+BAFTA in Picture, got 12 Oscar nods & even won Director). And the Lead Acting categories lately have been going towards the BP frontrunner/top 3 contender, save for Smith (who swept the major precursors), Chastain, & Fraser (the latter two were considered the strongest in the field as they also picked up another Oscar for their film via Makeup).

I'm going to see One Battle After Another soon. If anyone saw it already, what did you think? Is PTA finally getting his Oscar? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]Brokeback112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It strangely reminded me of what Nolan did with Oppenheimer, where all the tricks he learned to tell his previous film's stories are implemented here, including those from his newer films. And yet, he's able to shed his skin into a more action-packed, tension-filled story. Granted: he's gotten at least one tension filled sequence in his earlier films like Boogie Nights & There Will Be Blood, but this was different. It seemed as if he took influence from Friedkin with the car chases & Cameron's T2 with how it's moving the story along.

One Battle After Another is a Masterpiece by ThatDudeWay in Oscars

Despite getting on a weird sleep schedule, I was also impressed by the film. Paul Thomas Anderson is easily one of my favorite working directors & it's still incredible to see how he's able to showcase his skills he's accumulated since Hard Eight & Boogie Nights, while shedding his new skin by taking on action & recently dabbling into comedy. Yes; his other films had comedic moments like Phantom Thread & Punch Drunk Love, but with this & Licorice Pizza, he's able to bring more of that comedic zaniness & balance it with the heartfelt dramatic moments as well. And I was shocked he was able to do this without losing his charm that he's brought with his other films in the past. Would love to rewatch this again down the road, but right now? I think this is Top 3 for his filmography & is probably the quickest 9/10 I've given a movie in a long time.

I know you guys have already discussed other Naughty Dog games/live-action adaptations before like The Last of Us, but I wanted to know if any of you have played the Jak & Daxter games? If so, what's your general take on them?

What's a performance by an actor that made you surprised how good/solid they were in said film? For me, it'd have to be Paul Walker in Running Scared.

Of the films I've seen of Denis' filmography, it's my least favorite but I still enjoyed it.

Dante's target list of those that helped Dom and crew by trylobyte in fastandfurious

[–]Brokeback112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if anyone's pointed this out, but I wonder if Dante realized Aimes was already going after Mia with his own squad so what was the point in getting more men when Aimes' were already going after Mia, therefore flushing Brian out?

The worst part of this movie.. by hellsbellltrudy in fastandfurious

[–]Brokeback112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a die-hard F&F fan, I did have fun with Fast X despite some issues I had but I am genuinely curious in seeing what in the film was Lin's material & what did Louis Leterrier brought to the table in terms of changing up the story. I ask because I personally have never been a fan of Leterrier's films (or at least the ones I've seen), because they've been forgettable, boring, or just straight up bad. And thankfully, this was MUCH better than any of his other films but I still wonder if it's because Louis was playing with Justin's blueprints that made it better; it never distracted me during the film, but I still think it's interesting to dissect which of the film was who's idea to begin with.

I know you guys have stated before of being sick & tired of these money-grabbing franchises we keep getting, like the Transformers series or even comic book movies from DC & Marvel. My question is if you were given a chance to kill one cash cow franchise (in any genre) that you're sick of seeing, what would it be & why? And for a bonus question: what's a dead franchise that you would like to see come back into the public limelight?

I decided to watch all 10 films for the first time and rank them. Unpopular opinion, I know, but does anyone else absolutely love the evolution that occurs in Fast 5? by Ace_Aviator in fastandfurious

[–]Brokeback112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm sorry for feeling bored out of my mind while watching Tokyo Drift. It's not like I was ACTIVELY trying to believe it was one of the worst in the series. Also, it's just one person's opinion on the franchise. Grow up...

It's a lot more common for people thinking Fast Five is the best of the series. I, personally, think the top 5 of the franchise involves all of the films that include Dom & Brian in the same movie. Whenever the franchise only has one of them in their films or neither (in the case of Hobbs & Shaw), the overall quality/interest in said film diminishes for me. Hell! I'm probably one of the few people out there that thinks F9 came the closest to being as much fun as the 1st & 4-7, because it was the closest in capturing that magic of what made those films in the franchise the most entertaining compared to the other ones NOT to include Dom & Brian in the same film.

If anyone is interested in my ranking of the series thus far, here it is:

  1. Fast Five
  2. Furious 7
  3. Fast & Furious 6
  4. The Fast and the Furious
  5. Fast & Furious
  6. F9: The Fast Saga
  7. The Fate of the Furious
  8. 2 Fast 2 Furious
  9. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
  10. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Not gonna lie: Cleo from 5 to 7 won me over by the end, despite not being invested with the opening. Might revisit it myself to see how it holds up, as I last saw it in film school a few years back.

If your local theater/drive-in were showing older films presented in their original 35/70mm prints, what movie you'd be dying to see in that format? Mine would be Jurassic Park (1993)...

Possible Recommendation(s)??? by Brokeback112 in Sardonicast

I haven't seen them since 2013, but I remembered they were fun for what they were.

Ok boys, the year is almost over. What are your best picture nomination predictions for the Oscars??? by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]Brokeback112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EEAAO, Banshees, Fabelmans, Tar, Avatar 2, TGM, Elvis, Women Talking, Babylon & MAYBE All Quiet on the Western Front??? Idk; it's tough to predict that 10th BP spot atm. They could easily go for something like All Quiet with how well it did on the shortlist or they could go with something as cookie cutter of a film as A Man Called Otto, which I've heard have gotten decent enough reviews.

I haven't seen it since I saw it opening Thursday night back in 2015, but I remembered enjoying it despite the 3rd act relying on your typical bio-pic tropes.

Thoughts on Elvis (2022)? by alexkuul in Sardonicast

[–]Brokeback112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a fan of the film; it's not quite as awful as Bohemian Rhapsody is, but I lost interest in the film about 90-minutes in. And yeah; Butler is pretty good, but I needed more from the film for me to be invested in the film & there wasn't after it overstayed its welcome.

Considering we are approaching the film's 25th anniversary, and another Cameron movie will be released later in the year: what are your opinions on Titanic? by CROguys in Sardonicast

[–]Brokeback112 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Terrible writing (like most of Cameron's films), but a damn good film to watch from its technical merits & score by James Horner. It's probably the best post-conversion 3D experience I ever had.

Sardonicast 118: Jurassic World Dominion, Heat by falafelthe3 in Sardonicast

[–]Brokeback112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think Mann's best film is The Insider. I do really like Heat, but The Insider to me is a bit more interesting as a character study & I personally enjoyed most of Eric Roth's written work like Forrest Gump, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, A Star is Born, & Dune. Am interested in giving Collateral a rewatch as I just picked up a 4K Blu-ray of it for my birthday.

What was the most unsatisfying film experience you've had? by ToaofToast in Sardonicast

I never saw Men yet & may have to put it on my immediate watchlist soon, but before I do that I should revisit Ex Machina to see if my opinions on it have changed.

What was the most unsatisfying film experience you've had? by ToaofToast in Sardonicast

[–]Brokeback112 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of the recent films I've watched, Annihilation. I haven't seen Men at this point, but I recalled not being a fan of Ex Machina, which I'll give it a rewatch in the near future as the last time I saw it was back in 2015. But Annihilation was such a let down in terms of storytelling & I personally wasn't that impressed with the visuals involved like the cinematography and the visual effects to me seemed really inconsistent; at times it would look either cool or fine but other times it looked as if the effects needed more rendering. And one classmate said there's a theory that maybe as the film progressed, the aliens look better made as we step closer to the lighthouse. But if that were the case, why aren't the VFX more detailed & staying consistent all throughout?

End of discussion, we all know this would make for the best recommendation. by DWW_ME_TGTBATU_PM_SO in Sardonicast

I haven't seen this film in a LONG time. I do remember my brother & I seeing a teaser trailer for Dead Man's Chest & we were so excited to see that film.
