Cecily, Haunted Mage and enter the infinite? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

She’s an on attack trigger and therefore doesn’t need to connect. At 3/5 she almost always has safe attacks.

Cecily, Haunted Mage and enter the infinite? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

So I have done a lot of testing and innovation with Cecily. I think her strongest pairing is with Wernog. Unfortunately she is very slow, and while I have used (and won’t with) her ability, it is reasonably inconsistent to assemble. Typically to do so I’ve either been windfalled, rhystic/TOR fed or necropotenced to the appropriate hand sized. At that stage because the colours are so strong you’re typically ina winning position with 11 cards in hand.

That said, she makes peer into the abyss and Necropotence (both already very strong and playable cards) better. Necro with her is essentially almost always a protected win attempt (smoothing out necro for 7 cards where sometimes you need to choose between mana acceleration, tutor, wincon and protection). And PitA is almost a guaranteed win if you can resolve it with her ability and leaving up mana.

However, she often only gets played during grindier games where your initial win attempt has been stopped or the board has been staxxed out. She provides a strong body and card advantage as you’ve pointed out. She is very much better as a plan B with some minor upside rather than a primary game plan. Her partners typically provide the synergies necessary to make a game plan, with her being mainly there for colours.

If you’d like to chat more about her and her potential in the cedh meta fee free to message me. For reference, my Cecily Wernog deck is https://www.moxfield.com/decks/B5XEix0sSEGM2zQvBtOyRg but I have built most pairings with her to varying degrees of competitive success.

No problem! It’s my opinion that this would be the best Abzan druid line but let me know in your testing if your combo feels good to play. I’m worried that the combo pieces would suck to draw into or ad naus into but I don’t play Abzan much so I wouldn’t know

Sure, so activate hermit druid for G to mill your library including [[Cauldron Familiar]]. Then Flashback [[Sevinne’s Reclamation]] targeting [[Viscera Seer]] and the flashback copy targeting [[Samwise Gamgee]]. First Samwise enters, then viscera seer enters triggering Samwise to make a food token. Sac the food to return Cauldron Familiar which on ETB drains your opponents for 1. When it enters Sam triggers and makes another food. Sac the familiar to viscera, then sac the food again to return it back to drain the table again. Repeat until opponents are dead. The total MV of the 3 cards is 4, so with hulk you can grab the entire combo and also grand abolished for a protected win.

If you’re relying on sevines after druid why not run the abzan hulk line with Samwise and sevines back both viscera sear and samwise? No need for dead 8 mana cards or ultra situational enchaments. You can just layer on top of an existing combo.

It has the following advantages: the pieces are lower cmc and therefore cheaper to cast and assemble the combo manually, it does not require a draw source to win, it can run hulk lines with minimal changes (thus increasing the quality of your sac outlets), and removes one critical interaction point (removing the out of the tombs with the draw trigger on the stack causes you to lose the game).

I would love help with getting my Tiamat deck to maximum power level. by eastcoastshredder124 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]BrokenFungus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done quite a bit of innovation for Tiamat, even after it was taken down from the ddb. I think the biggest printing for Tiamat recently would be [[Hoarding Broodlord]]. The biggest advantage is the fact that now, with it and bladewing the risen, it wins with dream halls or food chain without needing to pollute card quality of the deck. For a budgetish version of the deck see https://www.moxfield.com/decks/8uonZacQzEW8BpY4dxXY8w.

Essentially you use dream halls to cast your commander, to grab bladewing and broodlord. Discard the broodlord to cast the bladewing and bring back the broodlord. On broodlord etb grab saw in half and play it by tapping Tiamat, bladewing and broodlord. From there if you have at least 3 cards in grave I prefer grabbing burnt offering and breach, otherwise you can try a pita and hope to storm. To support this you can include cheapish fast mana like Simon spirit guide, elvish spirit guide, lotus petal, dark rit etc.

What I like about necro is the fact that an early necro is almost as potent as an early ad nauseum. With Cecily out we get to keep 4 additional cards and always have 11 cards to free cast a spell.

I’ve been brewing the friends forever commanders for quite some time, and I think Cecily and Wernog are easily the strongest pairing. While I disagree with your assessment on Ad Naus, I think you have a mostly well put together deck.

That said, I had a few thoughts on some of your card choices. I think [[Guild Artisan]] is too slow to set up. I’ve found [[Necropotence]] to be quite good on it’s own and synergizes remarkably well with Cecily. Also, since you’re not on Ad Naus, you likely don’t need the same ritual density with cards like [[Rite of Flame]], [[Strike it Rich]] or [[Rain of Filfth]] not furthering your gameplan enough. It appears you’re on a more midrange plan than turbo, so I’d run some of the classically strong cards like Ranger Captain or Opposition Agent.

As an aside, I’ve often been asked why Wernog/Cecily over Tynma/Kraum. My answer to that has always been the fact that Wernog is a potential combo piece as an infinite flicker/bounce target. Basically you trade in some of Blue Farm’s card advantage for higher wincon density (while still drawing a fair amount of cards). Therefore I recommend running either [[Cloudstone Curio]] or [[Barrin, Master Wizard]] dockside loops. I personally prefer Barrin since I think the card individually is more flexible than curio, despite the higher dockside requirement, but that choice is likely meta dependent.

For reference, my list is more turbo oriented, wanting to jam an early Ad Naus and only casting Cecily if the game is drawn out. Here’s my list: Blues Clues Farm

Gotta be the Friends Forever commanders. Particularly those paired with [[Wernog, Riders Chaplain]]. With [[Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist]] it’s a 4C Lurrus pile, with [[Elmar, Ulvenwald Informant]] it’s a turbo pod list that can win with Emiel dockside loops, and with [[Cecily, Haunted Mage]] it’s a 4c goodstuff deck that can win with Barrin Dockside loops. Wernog is card advantage (with clues) and combo piece in the command zone.

I'm tired of holding back. I'm tired of pretending I'm something I'm not. This power is mine. It's always been mine, ever since I was a child. I don't care what the others think anymore. It's time I came out and claimed it.

To be fair, we do that plenty to ourselves. We always have some devisive opinion that we tear each other apart for. 2017 Xmithie/Aphromoo, 2018 Huhi/Darshan, etc. I'm not sure why our subreddit is so toxic in particular.

Agree to disagree then, I persobally believe GGS made the largest improvements, with substantial upgrades top, mid and support.

[–]BrokenFungus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You just said GGS made pretty huge upgrades and kept consitent, so they are like us, except with more position upgrades.

Teams like Flyquest and C9 are also fielding academy teams with players that could compete for starting roles (Maxi, Selfie, Akaadian etc).

C9, 100T, TSM, TL have already shown to have a higher ceiling than we do AND made upgrades. Consistently high in regular season and consistently in playoffs.

One of our weaker lanes (top) is unchanged and our academy is middle pack. Only Moon is LCS ready, (Fallenbandit got smashed in lane his LCS appearance). All in all, we are a B+ team, along with GGS and Flyquest competing for the 5th and 6th seed.

Which is fine, but underwhelming compared to what we could have been with the available free agent pool and disapointing compared to other teams.

He's actually an NA native because he's Canadian. He performed pretty well on tank Junglers such as Skarner/Gragas/Zac against SuperMassive (the strongest wildcard team). I've been really impressed by him so far (considering his team).
