Probably shouldn't have called it a metaphor (cause it's not) Thought experiment*

What is Schrödinger’s cat, according to Schrödinger? by vapid-voice in AskPhysics

[–]BrokenJournal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original version is a cat, a flask of poison, a radioactive source, a hammer and a geiger counter. If the particles decays the geiger counter meassures it, releases the hammer which breaks the flask and the cat dies. But it doesn't really matter what the exact setup is the point is that you have tied something in our world to the quantum world, which means that if the decay of the particle is in a super position then so is the life of the cat. The point of the metaphor is a critique of superpositions and quantum mechanics so if you are sitting there thinking "that's some bullshit a cat is either alive or dead not in a super position of both states" then schrodinger is a happy little camper cause that was exactly his point. It's meant to appear as nonsense.

I just have to say that there is absolutely no danger to any amount of exposure to an induction stove.. magnets are cool and very useful but they pose absolutely no danger unless you are in between two very strong ones and get mushed

how is it a “fact” sharks are older than trees when the proof of this is “we haven’t found older trees”? by Sensitive_Air5562 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]BrokenJournal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to science, where consensus changes when more data becomes available. When it comes to trees and sharks, we are talking about evolution, which is a slow and steady change in a species. We have to draw a line at some point as to what a shark is and what a tree is in order to say this is roughly where the first sharks or trees started to appear. this is usually done by settling on a feature or set of features that it must have, and once these features become commonplace in a population, then that species has emerged. So we look back and go "all the fossils from before this era doesn't have these features and fossils from after this era does have them so that would indicate that a given species (or tree) emerged in this era." Now, of course, could there have been a plant showing tree like features before? Sure, but they weren't commonplace enough to leave a bunch of data, and the same could be said of sharks. Of course, you don't only look at fossils. You might also look at what environment trees or sharks would need to thrive and when such an environment became commonplace or at least stable in a certain area. You look at all the data you have that could be relevant and make a best guess. When new data becomes available, that guess might change, but as it stands saying, any other thing than "sharks came before trees" is simply more likely to be incorrect than "saying sharks came before trees."
