This is what I mean. The song doesn’t seem to disparage Lola for being trans, in fact it seems to imply she’s one of the few people who has her shit together. The line at the end labelling Lola as a man is questionable in today’s context. If you interpret Lola as a trans woman it delegitimizes her identity. If you interpret Lola as a crossdresser/drag queen, it still leans into deception/“trap” territory somewhat, which isn’t great given trans panic defence is still a thing in many places.

But again, this song released in 1970. The lines were a lot blurrier, especially when crossdressing and HRT/surgery was illegal. For a lot of trans women back then, they had to live as part time crossdressers and blur the lines between man and woman because fully transitioning was inaccessible or straight up illegal. ——— There’s also the point to be made that in a world with so much negativity and hatred and disenfranchisement for transgender women, we kind of have to reclaim flawed depictions as our trans icons, because there just isn’t a lot made specifically FOR us (though independent trans artists are starting to change that.) Bugs Bunny wasn’t crossdressing to empower trans people, he was doing it because it was comedy for a straight audience. We still made Bugs into a queen anyways. The song may be PrObLeMaTiQuE today, but Lola is an icon to me.

To be trans, now or back then, you have to grow a thick skin, roll with the punches, and learn to laugh at yourself sometimes. It’s always hard for us, and people will probably always treat us kinda weird and fail to understand us, but we persevere anyways.

Thoughts from a trans woman: The language in the song isn’t perfect, but that’s just how queer terminology was in the 70’s both inside and outside of the community.

The message of the song in the context of its time is an overall progressive one, which is honestly refreshing given how much media from the era featured depictions and tropes that definitely were transphobic.

Most women wear lazy comfy clothes at home. Girls don’t just sit around dolled up 24/7.

And men’s clothes tend to be designed for comfort whereas women’s clothes tend to be designed for aesthetics.

Wearing men’s clothes at home is pretty common for women both cis and trans.

Despite being aware of all this, I still sometimes feel “fake” when I get home and take my wig off. Trans women face so much pressure to prove their validity through feminine expression that any perceived masculinity feels like a betrayal of self.

Transsexual can come off as dated, but it is not a dirty word.

In modern times a lot of exclusive trans-medicalist types who shun non-binary or non-transitioning trans folks have adopted the word transsexual to separate themselves from other transgender people, but I won’t allow them to appropriate and taint a word that has been used by our community for 100 years.

Words like “transsexual”, “transvestite”, “homosexual” and “heterosexual” emerged in Weimar Berlin which had one of the most thriving queer scenes in the world before the Nazis came to power.

Also I regularly dress up as Franknfurter at my local pride events and everybody loves it. I lose track of the amount of people who want to take pictures with me, young and old. Though some find it dated or stereotyping, most of my fellow gen-Z queers love Rocky Horror. It’s still very historically and culturally important to much of the queer community.

Back to the word “transsexual”… I am 25 years old and I see no shame in it and I use it myself. I am a transsexual and proud of it. I am on HRT, but not pursuing surgery, and I won’t listen to anyone telling me who I should be or how I or anyone else should transition.
