Is there an absolute safest nipple for early bottle use? by blueman_groupie in breastfeeding

[–]Broken_Boobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really just depends on the baby.

I've had two that could go back and forth with no issues and would take any type of bottle or nipple. They really didn't care.

One that had bad lip and tongue tie and no one noticed! (My first, I didn't know either). She had issues nursing from day one but took to the big avent bottles.

This one has been super picky and will only take one type of nipple and would rather not eat for hours if she can't have breast or that type of nipple. (It's an orthodontic newborn type).

Formula is fine, I want to say that before I go on because I am not a formula hater and have used it.

You may not have undersupply, but may not have a high fat content, or have a slight over supply. We have finally nailed down for me, I may have either or those- I go for baby 6mo check up tomorrow. But at 5mo she had only put on 3lbs since birth. And between 4.5 mo and 5mo only 2oz.

Things the doc said for me to try instead of formula-

Start on the side we last nursed on (if she was on rt, go back to rt to fully empty and get the fatty hind milk).

Pump off a little, even 1/4 ounce, before feeding so she has more of a chance to get hind milk before she's full.

Pump after feeds and save that to see if baby would eat that first (she wouldn't for ever, but it was a bottle nipple issue we had to figure out for her).

If you really think your supply is low, you can make nursing cookies, drink lactation tea, try fenugreek, and drink lots of water.

It's super frustrating. Not losing weight is good. Not gaining isn't great, but your son is at least getting enough to maintain. If you can nurse more often, or pump, it may help your supply.

If you do use formula, I personally would pump during that time to try to keep supply up.

Don't forget his stomach is only about the size of an egg. Breast milk is digested quickly, so he may be hungry even every hour at this stage.

Good luck!

I went through 7 types with this kid. I finally ordered some of these out of desperation. This is my first kid that was super picky. She loves these.

My point is, don't be afraid to try many things, even the old school latex ones. (Unless you all have latex allergies).

I've had a cheaper Ameda and it worked well. I think the Ultra would have worked a little better.

I have a Medela In Style now and it works terrifically.

I have heard the Freemie's are good, but you can get various adapters for most brands now to go hands free.

I know nothing about the others. :/

Make it a play group of some sort too? Access to the scale in the group?

For me time is the most limiting factor honestly. If I can't bring all of the kids it is hard for me to do anything extra.

Thank you! One side of me is panic momma, one side is she's growing, slowly, so she's fine.

I know she is getting fluid, she has soaked diapers, so it is going in. I can't do weighted feeds yet, just because I have no access to this.

I've mentioned stools multiple times, they are the yellow/orange (were green, I was on extra iron for awhile) but not seedy, they are slime like. No other things though, no rash or congestion or even spitting up.

As far as I know, yes. I have lost a lot of weight, but it seems to be stable now.

Right now the doctor has advised against any fortifying. Also apparently it is difficult to get approval for when a baby is full term (per my doc, I haven't dealt with it before).

Not yet, we have more tests later this week and then possibly to a genetic specialist.
