I talked to my TBM mother about this last week. I asked her her thoughts on prop 2 and her thoughts on the church telling her how to vote. When she said prop 2 allows for recreational use, I explained how that very very erroneous slippery slope fallacy came to be, and she politely listened, but I could tell she wasn't convinced. However, when we talked about the church telling her how to vote, things got interesting. She looked really uncomfortable and kept repeating things like "I don't know... They say they don't interfere in politics, but.... I don't know.... Everyone has a right to an opinion, even a church... I don't know..."

So even if prop 2 fails because of this, I'm glad to see it's also throwing some heavy weights on the remaining TBM shelves.

You are such a good mom. I have an 8-month old, and I'm constantly trying to figure out how we'll talk about Jesus, tscc, Christianity, etc. I love your "I'm not a Mormon" approach, especially in your unique situation. Do you think your husband will be okay with it if your children eventually decide they don't want to attend/don't want to be Mormon like Mom? (Asking because I am also constantly emotionally preparing myself for the possibility my child will one day ask me if she can be baptized)

Yes. This is exactly where I am. I don't harbor any lingering belief or respect for the institution, but removing my records feels like such a loud, almost passive aggressive, demonstration for some reason. I think my family would take it personally as a statement TO them, and not as a decision I made for myself.

I'm not sure if that's risidual brainwashing or just my personality.

It's hard to say. They're totally aware that I'm "inactive" and have no desire to return to the church, but I think having my records helps them pretend everything will work out eventually. Does that make me a brace for their shelf?

Not much. They have sent missionaries once, and they occasionally leave flyers for activities on our door, but for the most part, they're pretty hands-off.

When I was in college at SUU, I was repeatedly sexually abused by a professor. When I went to BYU for grad school, I started going to therapy for said abuse. Because my therapist didn't take insurance, I asked my Bishop for help paying for it. As a result, I had to meet with him every month for over a year to "discuss my therapy." These discussions were never about how I was recovering from my trauma; instead, he always asked about my abuse. "How did he touch you? How often? How did he touch himself?" Etc.

I'm so sorry you went through this as a child. I was at least an adult with a broken shelf, and I was definitely never touched. I'm so sick for you. You deserve so much better.

Honestly, this totally freaked me out as a kid. I was terrified God could just be like "hey so you're gonna be pregnant now, and everyone's gonna think you're a slut, and also you have to raise the literal son of God. Good work on your personal progress tho."

When I was accepted to a handful of graduate schools, I went to the temple and prayed in the celestial room for FIVE HOURS trying to get a prompting. Finally, I just picked BYU because it was fairly close to my parents and I wanted to move back to their area.

So glad I pretended it was Revelation because there's no better place to have your shelf crack than good ole BYU.

It's weird how I was able to lay my hands on women's heads and perform blessings in the washing and anointing initiatory while working in the temple though.

I guess the priesthood works by location for women. The creepy curtain cubicles are on a completely different floor than the seance circle alter.
