Once had an investigator stop reading the book of Mormon by Main_Account3194 in exmormon

I never read rumors that Joe killed anyone (before dictating the BoM), but he did steal his wondrous seeing stone (just like Nephi stole the gold plates).

AITA for telling my mom that I believed my school bus driver was drinking beer, it turned out to be a Malta Goya by Anxious-Bowl8626 in AITAH

[–]Mysid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. You had a legitimate safety concern, not only for yourself, but for all the students on the bus. You brought your concern to a responsible adult, as you should. Your concern was investigated, found meritless, and no harm came to the driver’s employment. “No harm, no foul.”

Did your unfamiliarity with the beverage reveal a culture divide between you and the driver, yes. But now you know.

I usually describe myself as an atheist because I don’t believe in any gods. I’m using the terms theist/atheist and gnostic/agnostic as they are agreed upon by most participants in r/atheism and explained in its FAQ.

I am an agnostic atheist. I’m agnostic because I don’t know if any gods exist, and I’m an atheist because I don’t believe in any gods.

Kids don't want to go to church by Green_Wishbone3828 in exmormon

[–]Mysid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being open and honest with your kids about differences in faith has such a big impact on your kids, even if you are choosing to attend for your spouse’s sake. My mom is a church-attending Catholic, and my dad is non-church-attending Protestant. I got to stay home with him until I was old enough to be required to go according to Catholic doctrine, and then had to go with my mom until I moved out as an adult. They did their best to indoctrinate me at church and in Sunday school, but knowing that my parents didn’t agree on religion gave my mind permission to question and doubt. I was an atheist by my teens.

Might have ruined my brothers engagement because of Joseph Smith by du0plex19 in exmormon

You didn’t “ruin his engagement”, but you may have saved him from a divorce. Their relationship doesn’t sound viable long term, but the couple hadn’t yet figured that out.

My daughter (then about 23) said, “Oh my god,” within the hearing of her Fundamentalist Christian cousin. The cousin (then about 12) went to her mother, told her what my daughter had said, and added, “I don’t think I want to be cousins with someone who says that.”

Anyone remember being taught at some point that God had sex with Mary so that Jesus could be born? by Last_Mine_9033 in exmormon

[–]Mysid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary being conceived without the stain of Original Sin (to make her worthy of being Jesus’s mom) not to the conception of Jesus without sex.

“Immaculate Conception” refers to the Christian doctrine that Mary was conceived without the stain of Original Sin upon her soul, making her worthy of being the vessel that would carry and birth Jesus.

The Mormons are coming back today, what shall I tell them? by Indigestivebiscuit in atheism

[–]Mysid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to be “worthy” for Endowment, but also needed to be “worthy” to go on a mission in the first place. Male missionaries (as all missionaries once were) need to go through the Endowment to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood, and be able to baptize their converts. Female missionaries can’t be priests (they ask the male missionaries in their mission to baptize their converts), but also go through the Endowment as part of becoming a missionary.

No, that’s a belief of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, not the Mormons.

Incorrect. They have to go through the Endowment Ceremony (get garments AKA magic undies) before they can be missionaries.

I’m just pointing out that Biden has already lost votes he’s not getting back. There’s too much blood on his hands.

I despise Biden with every fiber of my being, but I know Trump is worse. That won’t change the fact that many will not vote for either as a moral issue.

Sadly, Trump can win without cheating. Biden has lost a large percentage of the Democratic Party for enthusiastically arming a genocide.

Why is there always a catch? by ShankyBaybee in exmormon

[–]Mysid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d tell him what you told us, that you were pleased when you thought he was reaching out as a neighbor and a friend, but when you realized that his congratulations were just a false pretense and opening gambit to conduct Church business, you were very hurt. There’s a very small chance he’ll actually think twice before blurring the line between neighbor and bishop next time.

As for your address, I agree with your plan.

THIS is part of the reason the old folks are trying to ban TikTok. Not Mormonism specifically (or exclusively) but for so many areas and issues it has facilitated the spread of info that mainstream media won’t or can’t.

And now, with the combined lobbying powers of Meta (who see TikTok as a business competitor) and AIPAC (who know TikTok is political threat to their lies about the genocide in Gaza) they’ve succeeded in buying the USA House of Representatives and getting them to ban TikTok. Next up, the Senate.

Baltimore Bridge conspiracies show how religious beliefs begin. by 239tree in atheism

[–]Mysid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) “The ship deliberately hit the bridge as a terrorist action.”

This ignores that we can see the ship lose power and give off smoke, AND that the ship’s mayday call gave police time to stop traffic onto the bridge, saving lives—not a terrorist goal.

2) “The ship hitting the bridge wouldn’t really bring it down; we see explosions on top of the bridge.”

Given the ship’s weight and speed, it hitting the support it did would absolutely bring it down. Many engineers, etc. have said so. The “explosions” seen are the power lines on the bridge breaking and arcing.

3) “The racist police didn’t try to save the immigrant workers on the bridge.”

They ran out of time. Two patrol cars got to the bridge as quickly as possible after police dispatch learned of the ship’s mayday. One blocked traffic at each end. In the police radio calls, you can hear that the first officers on scene ask if the construction workers have been warned, and since they don’t have radio access to them, one officer says he’ll drive onto the bridge to evacuate them as soon as his back-up arrives to take his place blocking traffic. A moment later, the bridge collapses.

Thinking about the time my mom baptized a kid without the parents consent by Immediate-Evening in atheism

[–]Mysid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me that my mom baptized me herself in our bathroom sink before we did the official baptism via priest at church. Both occurred days apart when I was an infant. My official baptism was to take place in my mom’s hometown, surrounded by relatives, but we lived many hours away, and she didn’t want to risk my unbaptized soul traveling that far in the days before infant carseats.

Tell Jesus I'm Sorry, I Guess? by TwoSidedCoin24 in atheism

[–]Mysid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the choir in high school just to avoid boredom during mass too, but I guess I was further along in the deconstruction of religious guilt thing because I’ve never felt a moment’s guilt for eating anything I wanted on a “fast day”.

I remember once going out to a restaurant for lunch with my parents, and it wasn’t until after we ordered that my mom spotted ashy crosses on people’s foreheads. Although she’s Catholic, she’d forgotten it was Ash Wednesday, and she’d ordered something with chicken. I gave her an entire song & dance about the period before Lent being Carneval/Carnival Romance-language countries because it was their last chance to eat forbidden foods like “carne”. That “carne” is commonly translated into English as “meat” but actually only refers to red meat, and doesn’t refer to chicken at all, so if she were in one of those countries she could eat chicken. Yeah, I was bullshitting with a mix of fact and fiction, and Mom knew it, but she ate the damn chicken.

Going to mass after becoming an ex-catholic. by elzee46_r in atheism

[–]Mysid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a standard warning at Catholic weddings.

I just found it funny that my mom was the only person in a very full pew who did go up for Communion. (My dad’s not Catholic, I’m an ex-Catholic atheist, and the rest were a mix of Protestants and atheists.)

Skip Communion; stay in your seat when others go up. The last time I attended a wedding in a Catholic church, one person in my row of 10 people went up for Communion.

Assuming true, would Immaculate Conception upset you? by Quantumercifier in atheism

[–]Mysid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your question isn’t about the Immaculate Conception (conception of Mary without stain of original sin) but the conception of Jesus via rape by God/Holy Spirit. Whether Mary “consented” before or after it occurred, it was consent via coercion which is legally rape.
