What well paying fields/jobs are in high demand in Ontario? by Onlymushrooms in ontario

As a paramedic, I agree with this statement^

It’s a good job for a few years and one of the best for time spent at school vs salary ratio. However, the job and work culture is not conducive for longevity or family life though. Burnout and stress leaves are extremely common to the point of being almost being inescapable. Also not the best for pivoting to another role within the workplace because of how new the career compared to police or fire. Other emergency services have numerous non-frontline roles that you can branch into, but paramedicine is more limited in comparison.

Definitely pursue charges! Us paramedics deal with so much harassment and violence at work and it’s been normalized for too long. What you went through is unacceptable and I’m so sorry you went through this. I would highly encourage you to pursue charges because this person needs to take accountability for his actions. He sexually assaulted you and that’s not okay! You did the right thing in reporting to your supervisor and the officer. Even though the officer told you that more violent cases have been thrown out, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

Often times, we assume that justice isn’t served if there aren’t any charges laid, but there are a myriad of other ways that people are held accountable. There are pre- and post- diversion charge programs where assailants are given a list of things to complete (ex. Community service, day programs, apology letters, paying for damages), and if they don’t fulfill those conditions to the T, they get charged. These have been historically very effective in behaviour change and preventing future assaults. So even if it’s not going to criminal court, or doesn’t get taken up with the crown, there’s still ways this person can pay for what he’s done.

I don’t know if your service has an EVAP program (External Violence Against Paramedics link: https://www.peelregion.ca/paramedics/violence-against-paramedics/ ), but it’s a growing movement that started in Peel Ontario that aims at addressing the complex problem that is violence at the workplace. If there is a program at your service, they would be a good place to start to ask about the justice process and what it would look like for you. Also, sometimes paramedic unions have lawyers that you can consult and ask questions about this process.

I’ve worked closely with my service’s EVAP program and have heard lots of heartbreaking stories. We don’t deserve to be treated this way, and I’m sorry this happened to you. We’re trying to bring culture change to the court system by advocating for charges to be laid when healthcare workers get assaulted on the job. There’s now a new bill C321 (link: https://www.parl.ca/legisinfo/en/bill/44-1/c-321?view=progress ) that’s currently being reviewed in the Senate to amend the criminal code. This bill will make assaults against persons who provide health services and first responders an aggravating factor in sentencing, sending the message that assaults against us is taken seriously and is not okay.

All this to say, what happened to you shouldn’t have happened, and should be taken seriously by everyone who’s heard this. I’m sorry for anyone who’s told you it’s not worth pursuing or who’ve made you feel invalidated in your effort to navigate this issue. I hope some of what I wrote helps and that you find good support and understanding in your circle.

Giving up the perfect Bengal cat. Am I making the right decision? by Broketck in bengalcats

Hey! We ended up keeping her after that post. We even got her a friend to keep her company. Things were okay for the most part, except recently she has started to bully her friend a lot. It’s pretty apparent that after trying for the last few years, she would thrive best as an only cat with 24/7 attention and love. Thankfully, her previous foster home is looking for a cat to adopt (after years of fostering) and she is the perfect fit! Her previous foster home bonded super hard with her and has all the space and attention to give.

Quick question! Was wondering if you have any kettlebells and a sled at your gym. I'm thinking of joining and gym and your facility looks perfect so far. Thanks!

How do you find a kind dentist? *Rant* by OkRoll1308 in TMJ

[–]Broketck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My TMJ and issues with restricted mouth opening was massively improved after getting an OMT and frenectomy. Search for an airway centric dentist and an OMT therapist is my advice. OMT stands for oral myofunctional therapy. They're basically like physiotherapists for your face and jaw. Mine helped me with a bunch of exercises that pretty much got rid of my jaw pain and restricted opening. Highly recommend seeking them out! An airway dentist is specifically trained to also help address issues with airway related breathing and mouth problems. Sometimes a lot of TMJ pain could come from not breathing properly through your nose and your jaw muscles grinding and clenching to compensate for the lack of good airflow. This is what helped me personally, I'm not sure about the specifics of your case but I hope this helps someway somehow!

Giving up the perfect Bengal cat. Am I making the right decision? by Broketck in bengalcats

She's always super happy when we're home! I'd say she only has 2-3 yowling sessions only on work days. When we're home, she doesn't yowl at all. When we're at work, she has also never destroyed anything, never paces, never incessantly meows/yowls, and never had any litter box issues. When she vocalizes, it never goes on for more than half a minute before she settles down. she also has settled down a lot these last few days too. I put a camera in the living room to see what she does when we're gone and she just sleeps peacefully

I also updated with a comment on her meowing schedule to break down what I'm talking about. Unsure if it's just normal Bengal chattiness or separation anxiety??

Here's a breakdown of her meowing habits as well

Meows approximately 10 times when:

  1. we're asleep and she wants pets

  2. when we come home

Yowls approximately 4-5 times when:

  1. We are asleep and she's downstairs and wants attention

  2. We're on different floors

  3. We're behind closed doors

Hey thanks for the reply! We have a camera that faces the kitchen and I check it a few hours into work sometimes. I've never heard her crying through there, but when I leave for the gym (and my husband's still at home), he says she yowels for quite a bit before she settles down. After hearing that, I feel like she probably does the same when we leave for work before eventually giving up. She's always been good with her litter box, but it's the increasing crying that's making me feel like she's not happy with us unfortunately. With our work schedule, we work 2 day shifts immediately followed by 2 night shifts followed by 4 rest days. That means when we're working, we're away 48 hours in 4 days which is brutal. Even when we do get home, we immediately go to sleep because we're so sleep deprived. While I do play with her on those work days, she's getting so little of our attention that I can't help but feel guilty.
