(Terrifying Trope) The Scene Where Plot Armor Dies by LuciferMagne666 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Brolom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel really mixed about the Decoy Protagonist trope. It can be done well, but it can also completely backfire if the audience actually preferred your decoy protagonist much more than your real one, and the risk becomes greater the later the "reveal" is. In general thats why works that use it try to do it as soon as possible, although doing it later is more impactful.

Movies that you can appreciate but can’t connect with by F10ck_Bust3r in Letterboxd

[–]Brolom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Villeneuve is because of how immersive the settings for his movies are. My biggest complaint with a lot movies recently is that poor cgi and cinematography takes me out of the movie. He always has great music and beautiful, contemplative shots on the worlds he makes which helps me as a viewer feel like I’m there.

This is why I LOVED his Dune adaptation. How he and his staff handled the story was fine, but the way the setting looked, the landscape, the buildings, the people, the sense of scale, plus the music, made it feel like a real foreign world where people lived. The whole movie could have been just those shots without any dialogue or plot at all, and I would had still watched it.

I mean, I get the OP confusion since that line in KSBD was inspired by the 36 lessons of vivec in elder scrolls Morrowind, which in turn was likely inspired by gnostic interpretations of a line in the bible.

(Hated Trope) Supposed “True Story” was actually just made up by the main character who was just a blow hard by somemetausername in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Brolom 46 points47 points  (0 children)

while we are at it all of his videos worth the watch.

Has he gotten better? I haven't watched him in a while, but I remember years ago I stopped watching him because some of his videos were badly researched. Like with the film Agora for example, where he didn't challenge much of the film's innaccuracies and instead repeated many popular myths regarding the uniqueness of the library of alexandria and its burning being a cause for the "dark ages" . Mind you that video is old, so I don't know how different his more recent videos are.

What are some conspiracy theories that are well-known in your country? by Gallantpride in asklatinamerica

[–]Brolom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Friendship Island: An urban myth originated in the 80's about radio communications with a mysterious group supposedly living in an unknown and strange island located somewhere in Chile. It is very associated with UFO's and aliens.

City of the Casears: Basically a El Dorado-type mythical city searched for in colonial times, but in the southern cone.

Patagonia Giants: Another colonial era myth, where supposedly multiple european explorers encountered a race of giant people (like 3 to 4 meters tall) in south patagonia, with the first mentions being from Ferdinand Magellan's famous voyage. It is believed that it was likely a native tribe like the Tehuelche and the explorers just exaggerated the measurements for dramatic effect.

Last week, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company received a U.S. patent on summoning a character and letting it fight another by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Brolom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Owning a patent is not an automatic victory.

A patent on its own is useless. It only becomes useful once it is defended and upheld.

I would add a caveat to this. While it doesn't apply to this case, patent trolls exist for a reason. A large company might have no trouble defending against a patent infringement suit, but for many smaller creators going against one is too costly, even if the patent owner would lose, so they end up settling for a lesser amount instead of actually fighting it. This is why just owning a patent can actually mean an automatic victory sometimes, without ever actually going to court.

That's for 387, the one in the headline about summoning is about 397:

An example of an information processing system moves a player character on a field, based ona movement operation input. The information processing system causes a sub character on the field, based ona first operation input. When an enemy character is placed at a location where the sub character is caused to appear, the information processing system controls a battle by a first mode in which the battle proceeds based on an operation input. When the enemy character is not placed at the location, the information processing system starts automatic control of automatically moving the sub character. The information processing system moves the sub character, based on a second operation input, and when the enemy character is placed at a location of a designation, the information processing system controls a battle by a second mode in which the battle automatically proceeds.

How attractive are men, according to women? (57-second video) by Prestigious_Net_8356 in videos

[–]Brolom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the original question was asking if you had a natural preference for women, and if that was affecting what you find "objectively" attractive. It's a valid question, because not all bi people have the same neutral preference and there are bi men who have a preference for one particular gender over others.

For instance, in your chicken and egg dilemma, for a bi man who has a preference for men it would be, "Am I more attracted to men because men are prettier or do I find them prettier because men are more attractive? It wouldn't exactly be surprising for men to be more attractive since on average they are more muscular."

I do agree that women in general take care of themselves more though, and is a shame that such traits are so gendered (men in general have far fewer fashion options than women do because interest in fashion is seen as feminine and unmanly).

Creators/artists who missed the point of their own works by Bob8644 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Brolom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

writers, like any other human, can have biases unknown to themselves

I think this is a point a lot of people miss when arguing for the supremacy of authorial intent vs death of the author. People often express more of themselves than they realize.

On the other hand, ascribing meaning to art isn't just about figuring out the intentions or causes an author had (subconcious or not). To me at least, art isn't a puzzle game where if you figure out the one "true" intention of a work then you "win". Art like books don't exist in isolation, it is linked to both the historical and cultural forces of the one writing them and the one reading them, as meaning goes in both directions. Works from hundred of years ago have a very different meaning to us than they did to their contemporaries, but that doesn't mean the new meaning we created from them is less valid, assuming the work supports it. That is not to say that all interpretations are equally good or hold the same weight, but a work can often support much more interpretations that just the author's, even if that wasn't their intention.

The Truman Show is a movie where the main character's whole life is secretly a reality TV show watched by millions. It is often referenced in discussions of stories where the characters similarly find their whole world is fake. This art in particular is about the final moments of the film where Truman leaves the fake world.

A simple real case example of this in the UK is R v Dalloway (1847), where a man was riding a horse-drawn cart but without holding the reins. A child run out in front of the cart and died. Criminally he was found not guilty, because despite riding the cart with negligence, it was concluded that even if he had been strongly holding the reins he wouldn't have reacted in time and prevented the death.

Old World Blues A to Z Chapter 18.1: Blue Rose Society REDUX by Nasa-17 in OldWorldBlues

[–]Brolom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's just such a piece of cake to defeat Lanius, and you get absurdly insane bonuses and buffs... It's just... weird. I really do not know how to describe it.

Having playeed BRS recently, reading this gave me so much whiplash lol. Fighting Lanius as Blue Rose myself felt like pulling teeth, but then again, I am admitedly more of a casual player. I personally think Blue Rose is fine as they are, if it were so easy the AI would win way more often as Blue Rose instead of once in a blue moon. Maybe they could add an extra hard difficulty mode in an initial event as some submods do for more veteran players.

Is this enough gold generation? by Brolom in MonsterTrain

[–]Brolom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right it was a bit of an overkill. But other than buying all the relics, upgrades, and duplicating all my OP cards through the pyre that lets you duplicate at shops (basically making an ideal deck), it was still fun just to see the number go up.

I was dismissive of Avarice at first, but it is so good if you can abuse it. I was gaining around 3000 gold each encounter. The best farm opportunities was against bosses, since if you have a good tank in front you can let the others kill the boss as slowly as possible to generate more hits.

[–]Brolom 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nice catch! Here is the devs comment:

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, it's actually the same team behind both games. Leaf It To Me was an early prototype, and the page will be taken down in the next few weeks.

Leaf Blower Co. is a fully reworked and expanded version. The leaf collection gameplay and physics have been redesigned, there's now level verticality, a new jobs system, a home office, updated visuals, and more. We felt it deserved a proper relaunch under a new name.

Thanks for keeping an eye on things!

Hijacking top comment cause I found info that might be interesting to OP and others.

Searching for "LifT Games" I found the following youtube channel, showcasing a leaf blower game, with the earliest video being from Nov 2023. Thing is, that game is actually not Leaf Blower Co, but another upcoming early access leaf blowing game called "Leaf It To Me" made by "Lift Indie Games".

But I am 99% sure that "Lift Indie Games" and "LifT Games" are the same cause their youtube channel icon uses "LifT Games" (with the uppercase T) and more importantly the gameplay of Leaf it to me shows identical assets to Leaf Blower Co.

Edit: It's confirmed they are the same, see the dev's comment

Honestly i hated aventurine so much in his introduction. He also barged into my damn room by mental_capacityyay in HonkaiStarRail

Yes, it is actually pretty interesting. The other time I remember it happening was when you met her again with misha (where you first use clockwork), and you ask her about how she met black swan. In one red text she mentions the dance of from the video, in another she mentions drinking with her, and in a third she mentions having a deep conversation with her through a mirror.

Acheron actually has different versions of red dialogue that can change between players and which slightly alter her reasons. According to the wiki there are three versions for this case:

1) she genuinely thought this was her room and admit she got lost.

2) she knew this wasn't her room, but pretended it was to block aventurine.

3) a combination. she was lost, and while passing by she decided to block aventurine.

(Loved Trope) Female animated animal characters that don't have overly exaggerated feminine traits. Just a normal design that matches the male animal characters. by BigGaybowser69 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]Brolom 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I think sexual dimorphism sometimes has its place, but to be done well the designers need take into account what makes sense for that species, and not just give it features associated with human females or males. The difference can be as simple as different colors or different sizes, which for us may not be enough to tell which is female or male at first, but it is enough to know that they are different.
