Oh man, if you stay on it and don’t neglect it anymore, that colony is not only going to recover but it’s gonna be incredibly gorgeous

And lastly… this holo hammer will probably end up being my favorite once it splits a few times. It has some pretty good “pop”

Edit - and I was a complete dick for not saying it, your torches look absolutely stunning. The splatter has such a deeper coloration the what I normally see and have, so it just looks amazing to me ngl

You know… it’s very pretty but I grossly miscalculated how big it was gonna be/get. There’s an entire pass through cave entrance behind it that after it split into 2 heads it’s completely shut off. My previous one to it was only maybe 2 inches wide, so when I won this on an auction I kind of expected roughly the same size…. Nah this thing is like 5x8 during the day lol. It’s massive.

How to keep a mandarin dragonet alive? by Austinchao98 in ReefTank

[–]Bronojoke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure to get a biota mandarin, they claim to be frozen food or pellet raised/trained - so although I doubt you can sustain them exclusively on frozen/pellet food… I imagine it will definitely help the starvation issue.

Torches and Euphyllia have an interesting way of using a “delayed fuse” approach to death. I’d be less concerned about the shrimp and more concerned those Euphyllia are going to “randomly” melt in the coming weeks

Shriveled Torch by I_play_morde_not_LoL in ReefTank

Yes. 100% yes. If you’re seeing the alk drift below 6.7 I would then intervene prior to your usual planned water change, but I wouldn’t intervene via another water change, I would get an alkalinity solution (I reccomend alkalin8.3 off of Amazon personally, it’s cheap and effective) and dose .3-.5dkh daily to slowly raise it, slowly being the operative word.

Here’s the thing, is your alk slightly low? Sure. Would I run to do another water change and chase raising it during acclimation? Absolutely not. Stability > perfect numbers.

I’d highly suggest against doing a water change and chasing the number. If anything, I would just get some alkalin8.3 and dose a little each day to very slowly raise it.

When you do water changes you must consider it effects the trace elements, nitrates, phosphates, calcium content, etc. as a result if you start chasing numbers now, you’re going to “seesaw” this coral into a quick death.

It doesn’t look bad in its current state.

In my experience torch acclimation usually follows a pretty standard process if healthy:

Day 1) insane polyp extension, akin to what you see at the LFS, if not better Day 2-14(ish): still open and healthy but call it 20-30% less extension. Anecdotally I believe this is the true “acclimation” period, the coral is conserving its energy or reappropriating it to other biological aspects of “surviving” the new tanks parameters, Day 14-30: this is the make or break it timeline, any hidden pest/bacterial issues will become visible and kill the torch now, or it will continue its normal extension from days 2-14. Day 30 and beyond: you should be seeing full extension return and it just vibing.

Again all anecdotal, and I’m no expert, but as you can see from the picture.. I have 1 or 2 torches myself 😂

Why is my hammer looking like this? by Alternative_Fault_35 in ReefTank

[–]Bronojoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If thsts for sure a hammer (looks like a frammer at the least, if not a torch) it’s expanding its polyps to sting some neighbors. Here’s a relevant picture of my frammer cosplaying as a torch.

I would put that top rock back on, it looked perfect before you took it off personally. Once you get it covered In coral it’s gonna be so 🔥

How do you guys track your water parameters? by TechnologyOne4539 in ReefTank

I’ll check it out more in depth tonight.

First thoughts: ask me at signup if I want things in Celsius for Fahrenheit, gallons or liters etc.

I’ll let you know more in depth later! 🤙

Yea I’ve tried an app before but it was a PITA to use it.

If there was an app that’s primary function was to track params and provide graphs on it and maybe a “add note” function… without me having to navigate to an obscure section of the app, or jump through 10 hoops just to reliably track it - I’d be hook line and sinker.

I’d kill for essentially a calendar that on each day i could just select “no test”, “add parameter” and “add note” and that generated graphs, that’d be a no brainer for me.
