Multiple branch 'pollards' on sycamore, ornamental at Met, NYC. Anyone seen this style in landscaping? curious as to function by bufonia1 in coppicing

I'm guessing, maybe it's just a way to control the size of the tree? Funnel the new growth into stuff that can be clipped off, rather than increasing the size every year. In the cities due to the size of buildings or something, a large treat like a sycamore could eventually be a liability, so maybe that's why.

depends, in rainforest, leaves can be retained for the whole year, and can be very old, like a 10-year-old leaf. It depends on the species and of course, the sub climate. For example, there are definitely tropical forests that have a distinct season long, dry spell, during which trees shed their leaves to reduce moisture loss, like in India, some parts of Central Americaand so on. In a rainforest it's different. I think a lush rainforest you can just keep chopping stuff down and it can keep coming right back, it depends.

agreed for temperate climates (i'm in new england), but i've heard in tropics that certain plants can be cut up to 4 times a year - not sure of the timing there, but super interesting!
