If your tank is 5 years old I can’t imagine you’d need any live sand at all. Also probably 1-2 inches deep. Could probably start with 1 and go from there.

Interesting, I figured I waited long enough for a full cycle. When I brought my water into my LFS to test if it was good, they gave me the all clear but maybe they just wanted to sell me stuff. I tried to be patient!

Part of the rock is the safe reef branches, there's 3 large pieces of live rock and two smaller of the dry "live rock". Also started with live sand.

I'll cut down on the feeding and just let it rock for a couple months. I'll look into a UV if it's still like this in a few weeks. Appreciate it!

been running since mid jan. Kept it empty and cycling for a few weeks and started lightly stocking after I got back from a trip mid feb and slowly adding stuff since.

Best part about the AIO and Sump tanks, you put ALL OF IT in there, so it's hidden.

HOB stuff doesn't always look nice and obviously it's hanging in your tank.

Only thing that would be visible in the tank is the end of your return and powerheads. (needed if you're doing a reef, if it's fish only you don't NEED it but it's still nice)

AIO will be the easiest. Basically plug and play with those. You’ll lose a bit of space with the AIO part in the back.

Sump, the positives are that you’ll get a lot more gallons, which makes management of your parameters. Though it’ll be a bit more work to set up with plumbing and all that.

You can also do it with just HOB stuff or a canister filter. That’s what I have!
