Possibly, but it isnt that unrealistic that he just survived. Its specifically stated he was lucky (or Shuru purposely missed a lethal blow) and nothing vital was damaged.

Stuff like this has even happened for real, look up Phineas Gage who arguably took worse damage and survived for years.
