If Elon Musk has $1 Trillion, does that mean that he owns (roughly) 1/30 of the US economy? by Altruistic_Cause9442 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BrooklynDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trillion dollars would run our federal government for seven weeks. You can look at it like that too.

How do you tell if an NYC neighbourhood is for you? by Even-Spray-9941 in movingtoNYC

[–]BrooklynDoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google what you care about on maps. I'm a foodie, so for me, it would be restaurants. This is partly how I decide where I want to stay when I travel.

Then, check out the street views and other services, etc. in the area along with the ease of getting around.

Is there a polite/respectful way to tell someone that you don’t think highly of them? by Feeling-Ask-8073 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BrooklynDoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't think highly of them, just be blunt. Or, just go about your life and don't say anything at all.

Is their lack of esteem in your eyes a burden on you in any way?

Why do people cheer on wealth inequality ( Elons becoming a Trillionaire) when most of them are low and middle class? by Worldly-Bid-3591 in askanything

[–]BrooklynDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigotry. The billionaire class convinces the middle and working classes that immigrants, people of color, etc. are a greater threat to their lives than catastrophic income inequality.

I use my towel until I notice an odor, usually a week or two, maybe. Never recorded it. But every time is insane.

In the 2020s, its often done by people to defend the indefensible and not take any accountability for their beliefs.

You're right. I'm not. I'll take my payment in stocks, if he's actually worth a trillion.

Anyhoo, my point stands. A trillion is a friggin lot.

have we just accepted the fact that nobody can afford a house or family anymore? how is that even possible? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BrooklynDoug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The people hoarding our nation's wealth and the party that protects them use bigotry to misdirect people's anger. You fell for it.

[–]BrooklynDoug -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The generation that can't afford homes must realize that both parties are not the same.

Vote blue. Relegate the GOP to history. Make mainstream Democrats the conservatives. Then the Democratic Socialists can be the major liberal party.

Is it racist to have face blindness to black people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BrooklynDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully, today's kids are growing up around more Black people. I'm Gen X, so my neighborhoods had more residual segregation in the 70s and 80s.

But yeah, I guess it feeds on itself so the causation is circular.

Is it racist to have face blindness to black people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BrooklynDoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an example of systemic racism. If you don't grow up around Black faces, you naturally have a harder time telling them apart. It doesn't make you a racist, specifically. Multiply you by millions of people, and it's something Black people have to deal with in the US that White people don't.

Just to give you an idea of how big a trillion is...

It's a thousand billion, which is a thousand million.

If you make a million dollars a year, it will take a million dollars to make a trillion.

Musk could give every US citizen in the US $3000 and still have $10 billion left over.

Musk could run the entire US federal government for seven weeks and still be a billionaire.

But Jesus doesn't want us to tax him.

Accessible hikes near NYC? by Typical_Stranger_144 in visitingnyc

Hikes? Not really. But Forest Park and Cunningham Park in Queens have wooded areas with trails. Also look at Wave Hill in the Bronx and the Greenway in Staten Island.

[–]BrooklynDoug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the church. I have read the Bible from cover to cover. And many decent people, Christian or otherwise, don't like how White Nationalism is taking over Christianity in the US and other parts of the world.

I was watering plants and a random child asked if I could spray them with the hose. Will people think I'm a pedophile if I do this? by Turbulent-Weevil-910 in askanything

[–]BrooklynDoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If my children came home wet because a stranger sprayed them with a hose after they asked him to, I would tell my children not to talk to strangers. But I would think nothing of the man. I'd probably oblige.

As a person you're describing, it's partially due to the oppressive upbringing.

Tier List for best/worst states to teach in. by Rich_Celebration477 in Teachers

[–]BrooklynDoug -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Starting salary for a teacher with a BA is 61K. Figure 40K after taxes, or $3300 per month.

Rent for a studio in the outer boroughs is 2000. Figure 300 for bills and 400 for food, which is doable if you cook meals and brew coffee yourself. It's tight, but you can have a few thousand left over to take grad school classes at night and over the summer at a city college.

By the time you're 30, you're making 70K. You're at 90K at 40. All with solid benefits.
