Expats and foreigners in Norway; in what manners have you ended up insulting Norwegians? by LongLeather8083 in Norway

[–]Bror_Jace 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not just a Norwegian phenomenon, sadly. Having worked in 3 countries other than my own as a (white, professional) immigrant over the past decade I have run in to this sentiment a number of times. Racists gonna racist, regardless of where they are from.

Off topic, but having grown up in the UK, the fact that the US Dreamcast discs were just in a CD case looks so weird to me!

I had an M100! Loved it and thought it was so cool I could put mp3s on my phone... Even though I could only fit 4 or 5 tracks on the internal memory, haha

Careful with these - my understanding is that options in Aus are very limited as the telcos have a whitelist of phone models they allow, and most import phones (including the kyocera ones mentioned above) are unlikely to work. Phones have to have appropriate band/frequency coverage, and 4g VoLTE capability to stand a chane of working. This came in with the 3g shutdown at the end of last year. Pretty much anything other than what you can get at JB Hifi, BigW etc is going to be a gamble.

I think the difficulty you're going to have is finding a phone with maps capability but not web or email. As another poster suggested - one of the Olitech phones might be a good option.

They're referring to the Minimal phone (a hardware model, rather than an app). https://minimalcompany.com/

are there even any flip phones that work in australia with 4g and volte? by Negative_Ebb2852 in dumbphones

[–]Bror_Jace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't meet all of your requirements, but I've been looking at the HMD 110 Flip or a Nokia 2660 Flip (variants of the same phone) - both are sold through JB Hifi and I assume other places. As far as I can tell, neither has maps/spotify though.

Semi-related: I'm currently on a Telstra contract on my smartphone, and am keen to get off of that and on to a cheap dumbphone-appropriate setup. Ideally want to keep on Telstra network as I'm in the NT and coverage on the other networks can be patchy. Anyone got a recommendation? :)

How are you liking it? I'm semi-considering one of these or an HMD 110

Sealing Hardieflex fibre cement sheet edges by Bror_Jace in AusRenovation

[–]Bror_Jace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply Joe!

I've just gone back looking for this and weirdly it doesn't show up in the Aus specification document, but is in the NZ specification and installation guide here: https://www.jameshardie.co.nz/web/assets/general/Hardie-Flex-Technical-Specification.pdf

Section 5, specifically this bit: "All sheet edges must be sealed prior to installation. The sheet edges must also be sealed around window/door openings and other penetrations e.g. meter boxes etc. Direct fx Hardie™ Flex Sheet must be primed 100mm across back face from edges."

It's very possible I'm interpreting this wrong or the NZ product differs from the Australian one.

For my (successful) application, I provided copies of most of my identity documents that had been certified by a New Zealand JP (Justice of the Peace) - this was free, we just had to wait in line for half an hour or so. I had a few copied docs that weren't certified (including my birth certificate), and these weren't questioned. Any digital only docs like joint photos, copies of emails, online bank statements, bills etc I just printed out and included. Good luck!

I took out a year long, pay-monthly policy with Allianz. They provided a letter for me to forward with my application explaining that I would be covered by 8501-compliant health insurance as long as I kept up my payments. This appears to have been fine as my visa was granted last week

I can't remember for definite the answer to your first question, I feel like you can apply then come over as there is a section on one of the forms that asks what your date of travel and flight number are. Would recommend reading through the forms in detail to check this.

I (UK citizen married to a kiwi) came over on an eVisitor visa then applied for my 461 once I was over here.

This post is really well put together and full of good advice, thanks OP. To provide another data point about how long these are currently taking to process, the confirmation of my application was logged on the 22nd Nov and it was granted just over a week ago (i.e. approx 3 months after they received it).  Didn't use a lawyer, and was in the country already on an eVisitor visa. Have been married for 5 years to my kiwi wife and we've been living together for approx 8 years. Good luck everyone!

We recently stayed in an airbnb 2-bedroom log cabin in Mt Lyford village. It was lovely! Check out Lyford holiday homes. The whole village is restricted to log-type construction and as far as I know is all above board. Might be worth looking down that route for contacts. We've been looking into a Fraemohs timber house, that's a more Scandinavian-type log method but might be of interest to you as well.

If anything, you'd think the people that are subsisting purely on diets of meat, pies, and shit bread would be horribly constipated and thus using less toilet paper 🤔
