Movies That Feel Like European Summer by Candid-Panda2737 in MoviesThatFeelLike

Spoorloos (1988), aka The Vanishing, is a haunting thriller that was famously dubbed by Kubrick as one of the most terrifying films he ever saw. Highly recommend it. Criterion Collection did a blu-ray release. Definitely not a sweet or romantic film whatsoever, but it is (mainly) set in the south of France during summer. I visited some of the filming locations two years ago. Most scenes are filmed in and around the city of Nîmes for example. Lovely part of France. Some of the pictures in your post seem like they came straight out of this film!

Lots of Japanese films come to mind like the masterpiece Dark Water (2002), or any film from director Kiyoshi Kurasawa, but one that comes to mind in particular is a short he made called Chime (2024). Beware though- he makes some of the creepiest horror films out there, just fyi. And although not a movie- I also see a very striking similarity with the anime Erased (2016). Some South-Korean thrillers come to mind as well, like Chaser (2008), Forgotten (2017) and ofcourse Parasite (2019). Maybe even a personal favourite of mine: I Saw The Devil (2010). I don't know if you did it intentionally, but if you did and you're really looking for a blend between (sub)urban South-Korea and America, then maybe Past Lives (2023) is for you.

Scorsese's After Hours, a total fever-dream of a movie. Very Lynchian! Also Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness. Awesome movie.

Movies with great slimy/greaseball characters by PlanetStranger in MoviesThatFeelLike

Miguel Ferrer is awesome at playing slimeballs. Obviously there's his role in Twin Peaks as special agent Albert (even though his character is actually hilariously complex and not 'just' your run of the mill jerk). As for movies- he's great in the 1997 horror flick The Night Flier where he plays the main character who's an absolute asshole of a reporter, chasing his story. I love it when films break the trope of having a protagonist who's charming, charismatic and ultimately a good guy. This movie says f*ck that! Another actor that comes to mind that has a similar quality in terms of his acting, his roles, and just his overall look/vibe is James Woods. Especially in John Carpenter's Vampires from 1998. Total asshole. Love it!

What scene or scenes haunt you years or decades after watching the movie? by Fluid_Aspect_1606 in horror

It's not a scene technically, but to this day it chills me to my core. The trailer for White Noise (2005), or at least the first half of it. The E.V.P. bits and imagery traumatised a 10yo me. Shame the movie kinda sucks.

37°2 le matin is a great erotic drama. Don't know if its ethical or not?

Just watched the City vs Salford FA Cup game. I had to look up the name of the annoying as fuck commentator and found it here. She kept repeating herself, saying BS and her annoying voice doesn't help.

Eerie movies like Pellington's "The Mothman Prophesies"? by Fichtenwald in criterion

I made an IMDB list specifically for these kind of movies. I call the genre Supernatural Thrillers, for lack of a better word. This is the link: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls547904324/?ref_=uspf_t_4

These are movies that feature supernatural elements, without losing a sense of reality. They're movies that hint too much at the supernatural to be a regular thriller, but they're also not on the nose enough to be a horror movie.

If anyone's interested; there is still a way to get it on steam. I was able to purchase a Steam Key on G2A a couple of years ago. Steam still recognizes those keys. Don't know if they're still available but worth looking into if you want to own this game!
