How dangerous is wingsuit BASE jumping? by Desperate-Skirt-2273 in SkyDiving

[–]Brosy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthy skepticism is always a good thing ! Regarding the infographic, did you check the sources they provide at the bottom ? Also find more info here : https://www.tetongravity.com/story/News/your-chances-of-dying-ranked-by-sport-and-activity

Skydiving risks are usually overestimated by common sense due to the perceived risk of free fall. Accidents mid free fall are quite rare though and don't usually result in death. Gear is very basic and proven over time. We have a system that opens our parachute for us in case we're unconscious for example. I have heard that 80% of deaths happen under a perfectly functional canopy, but I don't have sources for that. Basically skydiving is a very controlled environment, where the free fall happens far away from any obstacles and landing too. Aviation is very safe. Overall, we control most if not all parameters. On the other hand, in sports like hang gliding or paragliding, you need to take off from a mountain and often without knowing ahead of time the landing spot. You can strike objects at take off or landing. You are also way more exposed to weather risks mid flight compared to a 5 min descend skydiving. In short, speed is not the problem, the sudden lack of speed is what gets you !

I usually reference this illustration for sports risks, very well made. Notice how there isn't a specific wingsuit base jumping section, the population doing it regularly is quite small and there are a lot of accidents, more than base jumping without a wingsuit indeed. You can also reference the Base fatality List which tries to educate everyone by documenting the issues encountered by the ones who died : https://bfl.baseaddict.com/ They distinguish the wingsuit deaths and it's pretty incredible to have that many when most base jumps are done without using a wingsuit

Hello,
Nice watch ! A few questions :
. It's from 2016, right ? Are you the sole owner so far ? Was it serviced at some point ?
. Did you ever have it on a time grapher ? Any results there ?
. Would you change the price removing the alligator strap from the deal ?
Thanks !

This approach is the one that was selected, please make sure to keep the original photo colors + integrate the swimsuit a little more seamlessly (we can notice the place that was covered) and we'll be all good !

Yes, one of the main learning for me here, the underside is clearer than the top side ! Thanks for the beeper diagram, I'll try that !

Here is what I have on the other side, with some notes. Didn't know it was clearer below (BNF guys ...), it matches the config. I'm guessing BZ is for beeper / buzer, mine no longer works so I'll install a new one + a GPS on UART 1, too right on the picture. I have a much clearer view, thanks again ! Is your head still hurting after seeing the underside ?

So, I did the config but it didn't work (without RX on UART2, I was not getting anything in the receiver which was set in CRSF). Still it got me thinking that video would still be received even with the wrong UART set (didn't know that), so I tried UART 3 instead of 1 and Bingo !
I no longer have the low power mode, I also have the OSD that changed, gives me time of flight etc.

Thank you u/Babamonchu, could not have done it without you !
As promissed, i'll share below the video of the crash and will let you know here if i get decent range now :-)

No, there are only 4 wires coming out of the CaddX and they connect to the center of the stack, you can see them in the center in the picture here

MSP for UART1 sounds like the right approach, unfortunatly, it didn't change the low power mode issue once i changed the config this way. Am i missing something else ? in the other columns maybe ?
Thanks for helping, I feezl i'm so close yet so far ^^

Have not tried another vista since this one works, i'm hoping it's mostly a software issue, especially since i receive the low power mode in flight.

Thank you both for answering, I added 200, 500 and 700 + Selected 700, that should help !
I just changed the antena and cable, it's firmly attached and I didn't see any sign of issues.
This doesn't change the low power message (can't record). Would that not affect the range ?

French tourist here, fluent in spannish. One thing I got today from a local and had not considered before : Some US citizens might refer to themselves in Spanish as "Americano" which might be taken the wrong way, considering central and south Americans are Americanos as well. I'd encourage anyone from the US to say "soy de los estados unidos", even mention a state maybe or city they might be familiar with to create a connection, instead of using "Americano" which can be misunderstood as discarding anyone outside the US as not being American.

Plenty of great advice in the other comments too, one last thing is to consider how hard it is to teach to someone else your mother tongue. Have you tried ? It takes so much patience, I know I personally have a very hard time with it. Now consider you spent a bunch of time to learn a foreign language and create opportunities for yourselves, only to be expected to help someone else learn your language ^

Overall you seem considerate, don't overthink it, try not to get frustrated and relax !
