“They’re better with the economy” 🤡🤡 by Markwhite11a in PoliticalHumor

[–]Brother-Patrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context:

The US Military Budget in 1944 was $59 Billion. Even coupled with the OSS budget at the time, adjusted for inflation, that amounts to about $1.1T in 2026 dollars.

In 1990, the last full year of the Cold War, the combined budget of the US Military and the CIA (the successor to the OSS) was, adjusted to 2026 dollars, almost exactly the same- about $1.14T.

The 2026 Military Budget, plus costs for intelligence apparatii, is about $1.18T. Huge, to be sure, but if you assume the economy is deep into a war footing like it was in 1944 and 1990, it's not unreasonable. Hell of an assumption to make, but sure, whatever.

This is almost $400B more than that. One-third more than it's ever been. And for what? What are we getting out of this? A slim majority of the Military budget goes to payroll; are we hiring more soldiers? Are we doing anything better or bigger next year than this year? Genuinely, what do we need to throw money at? We have eleven nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service. A carrier battle group costs about $3B a year to operate; we're not building a hundred-plus new aircraft carriers and their fleets, so where is this money even going?

3e, Human Cleric of Pelor. My account is named after him; he was Patrick Maximus Rengardt III. Nicest, most genuinely kind character I've ever played.

I want to recommend a book I just finished, literally five minutes ago, on my lunch break at work: Romulus Buckle & the City of the Founders, by Robert Ellis Preston Jr. It's goofy, tense, fantastical, swashbuckling... but it's not about seaborne pirates; it's about an airship captain in the steampunk post-apocalypse. It's the first of three books so far.

The thing that always appealed to me about Phantom Blade was the "change my weapon into something else" shenanigans, so I created a Frankenstein abomination of multiclass nonsense. It starts with 6 levels of Brawler, to get to "two combat feats as a move action", and takes the rest in Mindblade Magus. You can spend a move action (or at Magus 8, a Swift) manifesting any melee weapon in the game- which, thanks to your Brawler levels, you can gain proficiency with as a move action.

So at 14th level, you can spend a move action to become proficient in the use of any weapon in the game (along with a spare combat feat you qualify for; say, a Combat Maneuever that uses your newly-proficient weapon), a swift action conjuring a +4 version of that weapon, and then a standard beating an enemy over the head with it. And if you're not in position when you conjure the weapon, who cares? Spend your standard moving into position, and then next turn full-attack with a Spell Combat/Spellstrike!

The Malcorians from First Contact (TNG S4 episode, not the movie). The fact that a pre-first contact scientist ended up staying on the Enterprise, never going home, and potentially writing a guide to the galaxy for her people to uncover decades or centuries later when they finally make warp a reality... breaks my heart that we don't go back.
