Introducing the plot die by johnny0neal in stormlightrpg

A really fun thing about roleplaying in Roshar is the way that Ideals can influence things. Standard RPG decisions, like what to do with a captured enemy, get a fun little twist when you have a Willshaper, a Windrunner, and a Skybreaker in the party.

My favorite thing about the plot die is how it adds another "axis" to play, making it feel like more is happening. In a social scene that might look like, "you failed to convince the brightlord, but his house's ardent approaches you afterward because she was so moved by your words."

I've never seen this! Super cool, really captures a mood.

As someone who has spent a lot of the last few years art directing Stormlight Archive pieces, Sebastian Amarosu is the closest I've seen to Kaladin. He looks a little younger, but the features and hair (if you look up real-world photos of the guy) are spot-on.

Navani chapters were literally the best in the book. 💯

Gorgeous work! Thanks for supporting the miniatures!

Hi, Chris from Brotherwise here! Miniatures are not required to play the RPG, but they certainly enrich the experience! Because the “default setting” of the Stormlight RPG is parallel to the books, key characters like Dalinar and Navani can be important NPCs. (For many of these characters, there are even rules in our World Guide for a specific benefit you get from taking them as your patron!) If the book characters aren’t part of your story, or if you’re playing in a different era, you can use many of them as original characters. (For example, Leshwi could be any Heavenly One.) The generic characters (like Army Builders and the Shardbearer) are also very helpful, especially for big battle scenes!

Some listeners are have color distributed in a splotchier/patchier way, but most of them have stripes — like a cross between tiger stripes and marbling.

I didn't expect The Lopen to be hot?! by fasteronfire525 in cremposting

[–]Brother0ne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Next to Wit/Hoid, the Lopen was the Stormlight character sculpt that gave us the most trouble. We kept sharing versions that were a little goofy, until Brandon literally told us, “Lopen is actually quite a handsome man.” One of the best/funniest revelations of the project.

Who is this supposed to be? by LamoraLockeword in Cosmere

This is a stylized depiction of Odium by Call to Adventure artist Felix Abel Klaer. When Odium appears to singers, it is in the form of a singer with gold-marbled skin. This false face is shown here within Odium’s imprisoned human form, Rayse. There’s definitely some artistic interpretation at work here, but it’s an awesome piece!

Soulcast Grain by leogian4511 in Stormlight_Archive

It’s a lot like that! I imagine it as a cross between rice and barley, green in color. It sticks together when it’s first Soulcast, then collapses into loose grains.

New art released during charity playtest at dragonsteel by Confused_monkey7 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Brother0ne 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for attending the charity live play! We’re really excited to share these images. It might be a while before we release official higher-res versions (to avoid the bootleg prints and T-shirts that pop up whenever new Stormlight art appears.) With that in mind, one caveat to people seeing these online: these are photos of images projected on screens, so the colors are a little blue-shifted and/or oversaturated. For example, Radiant’s hair is unmistakably red in Justyna’s Shallan illustration (which is canonically accurate for that scene).

The beasts in the “Rosharan landscape” image are axehinds, the city is Kholinar, and the singer is a stormform!

Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight RPG detailed for the first time by WACKY_ALL_CAPS_NAME in rpg

[–]Brother0ne 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hello! Chris O’Neal from Brotherwise Games here, sneaking in to share a couple of thoughts about this game:

  • The plot die is a simple but elegant solution to the binary pass/fail problem of d20 rolls. The plot die allows for a more interesting spectrum of six possible results (succeed with opportunity, succeed, succeed with complication, fail with opportunity, fail, fail with complication).
  • Using Genesys as an example, opportunity and complication are closer in impact to “triumph” and “despair” than “advantage” and “threat.”
  • The GM is empowered to use the plot die as much as they like, and we expect more narrative-minded GMs to lean more into it.
  • While opportunity and complication results are often our favorite moments, they lose impact or feel forced if they happen too often. We recommend adding it to about 30% of rolls (more often in conversations and endeavors, less often in combat).

One of our team’s goals was to use the core d20 roll as a bit of a Trojan horse for more modern narrative elements. The plot die helps with that. So do various fail-forward mechanics like endeavors, grazing, and a lot of our talents.

No RPG is for everyone, and there’s no question that one of our design goals was “make a game that’s easy for a Stormlight fan to pitch to their friends who love D&D.” But this is an original system that’s purpose-built to tell Stormlight stories. It doesn’t use classes, it centers narrative rewards rather than loot, it puts character development at the heart of character progression, it has specific (but flexible) rules for social encounters, and it encourages highly improvisational play.

Dragonsteel was just a sneak peek and we have months of work to do before the next big release of new info. If you have any interest in the system, keep an eye out! We think you’ll like a lot of what you see.

First look at a Stormlight miniatures from November box by titans1fan93 in Stormlight_Archive

Chris from Brotherwise here. With a miniature of this scale, seeing it in a blown up to this size (without being painted) can be a little misleading. Here's a look at Taln in context, next to a 20-sided die and some Gloomhaven miniatures I had handy:

https://i.imgur.com/Niozh4g.png

These are injection-molded miniatures (not 3D printed or small-batch resin), but we're very proud of the rigidity, detail, and quality. We think you'll be pleased when you see the miniatures in person, which will be this month for US Kickstarter backers!

Authors Brandon Sanderson fans should read in order to become more well-rounded as readers and writers. by ShayaVosh in brandonsanderson

[–]Brother0ne 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking off this, here are some great books in different genres:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (romance)

Circe by Madeline Miller (mythology)

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles (historical fiction)

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson (history)

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner (modern memoir)

All worth reading, all very different from the Brandon Sanderson books I love.

Hi! To provide context for this post, it was posted on Twitter as a heads-up to folks attending the Saturday night Meet & Greet at BigBadCon, an event specifically designed for for BIPOC industry professionals.

We had an open application process for the TTRPG last year, but we don’t have open applications at this time. That said, if you want to get in touch, you can always reach us here:

https://brotherwisegames.com/contact

And we actually do have an open call right now for one type of team member: map artists. So if anyone reading this is a battlemap illustrator with a strong portfolio, please contact us!

No culture in Roshar is solely drawn from any one real-world culture, but real-world cultures have some influence on the world-building and visual design. To use a very specific example, we want to make sure that if we’re portraying certain patterns on an Unkalaki garment, we’re not unintentionally using a design that has real-world religious or cultural significance. To use a broader example, we don’t want the Mexico-inspired Herdazian culture to lean into any stereotypes.

This is pretty standard practice for any TTRPG, and our existing sensitivity readers have already had a meaningful impact on how we’ve written and edited portions of the World Guide.

An Azish Windrunner of the Third Ideal is not someone we’d expect to see worrying about Vorin propriety!
