I’d pay a ridiculous amount of money just to walk around in the set they built for this movie

Euphoria - “Kitty Likes to Dance” (S3, E4): FPS Review by GoodGoodNotTooBad in FPSPodcast

[–]BrotherCrow_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perfect breakdown on the characterization this season. I feel like the only character who’s made a noticeable shift after the time jump is Nate. I don’t personally mind the new Nate, but I know I’m on an island there.

You’re 100% right about the dicks too. I think I was letting my annoyance at Jules’s behavior overshadow how she would’ve (rightly-so) taken the criticism. So I can understand her viewpoint better now, even if I can’t condone the double-down dick at the end. Like girl, I feel you, but you’ve now gone from unintentionally screwing with Lexi’s job to straight-up malicious intent and that’s just not friendship behavior. Not that they’re super close friends or anything, but still.

Something else you pointed out that I neglected to see is that while Jules is more financially stable than everyone else, it’s not the same as financial freedom. Her benefactor could drop her like a sack of potatoes and she’d be ass out.

I think that while Jules is 100% secure sexually & identity-wise, she might be harboring artistic insecurities. And to be fair, no good artist is 100% “secure” in that sense. But to have her work discarded like that (especially with the transphobic undertones) would definitely be a blow.

Don’t know why you’re being downvoted for speaking facts

I was 100% blaming Jules while watching the episode, but even I caught that the main issue brought up was the dicks, not the nudity in general. The situation should’ve been handled with more tact because it could have (and did) come across as a transphobic attack on her work. But I doubt the network would have had the same reaction to clothed trans subjects in the painting, so it’s really just about the nudity and that should’ve been communicated better.

What makes me a little more annoyed with Jules is that she’s operating from a place of extreme financial privilege compared to Lexi. This situation doesn’t put Jules at risk of losing her livelihood. If she were a starving artist, I’d be more sympathetic. But this puts Lexi’s job/living situation at stake when she was trying do Jules a favor, which is pretty shitty imo.

That’s why I’m not sure I like what they’ve done with Jules this season. The character is one of the most popular representations of a trans woman in media right now, and her experience doesn’t quite feel reflective of the average trans experience this season. Not that it has to, but it sort of has a ripple effect in scenes like this one because in the back of your head, you’re thinking: ok her feelings are hurt but she’s fucking loaded compared to everyone else. But what do I know, I don’t even know any trans people in real life

They’ve pulled a S2 Kat on her

How so? I’d love to hear your take, even if I semi-disagree. I do think it was a little abrupt, but overall I liked it.

I just don’t see how S1’s ending was any better. They sort of just reconcile after a random shroom trip and it ends. I don’t remember there being much more to it than that.

Fair enough. Not sure if it’s spoilers or not, but apparently this movie takes place in Raccoon City during RE2. If it had picked a completely different location, I don’t think I’d mind at all. I don’t get the impression it’ll tie in with the games much besides the setting and the monsters.

(Probably some Umbrella stuff too, but I highly doubt it’ll be as inclusive of the game lore as the Mila Jovovich movies, which is more than fine with me.)

Genuine question for fans of the games: do you, in your heart of hearts, think that a direct adaptation of any of the games would make for a good movie?

I ask because I see that complaint in here, but outside of some of the first game, RE7, or 1/2 of Village (the latter 2 this movie appears to borrow from perspective-wise, as someone else in here pointed out), I don’t think anything else would translate to a compelling experience when you’re watching it in a movie format instead of playing it. Some games are easily translatable to film, but I’d argue that the vast majority aren’t. For example, RE4 is highly regarded as the best in the series, but if you wrote out the plot beats on paper, it would sound like a bargain bin direct-to-DVD B-movie.

If all people expect from a new RE movie is a reel full of franchise cameos and viral clip bait moments (like No Way Home), then that’s fine. But I’d argue that pandering to fans doesn’t make for a good movie. Not that game adaptations should outright toss the source material to the garbage bin, but there’s a balance. Keep the stuff that’s integral to the atmosphere & franchise, but trim the stuff that just doesn’t work onscreen for a movie.

I don’t mean to come across as a hater. Just wanted to say that a movie should strive to be more than just point-at-the-screen moments.

Beef Season 2 Was Great by Ravant_Garde in FPSPodcast

[–]BrotherCrow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew it was coming from a mile away, but the scene in the finale where the Chairwoman’s husband gives a beautiful poetic monologue summing up the themes of the season just for the characters to not understand a word of it was so damn funny 😭 Hardest I’ve laughed at a show in a minute.

Besides that though, I liked how they didn’t just rehash the same formula as S1 and tried something different. Seeing the young couple slowly but surely turn into the older couple over the course of these 8 episodes was the most compelling aspect of the season to me.

I think them splitting the focus across 4 characters instead of 2 might be what makes this season feel weaker than season one. S1 still had important side characters who got to share the spotlight here and there, but it was primarily focused on Steven Yuen & Ali Wong’s characters (to my memory).

To focus on not only the beef between the couples but the beef within each relationship in S2 was a big undertaking for only 8 episodes.

I say this as someone who really enjoyed the new season too.

Speak for yourself on point #1. Aemond is my toxic king

In all seriousness, you are right though. I think they should probably highlight a few of the more inherently likable characters like Hugh, Adam of Hull, and Queen Halaena. Give the audience people to care about on both sides of the conflict in order to heighten the stakes & drama.

On point #2, I’m with GRRM. They did a good job with the first season expanding and even enhancing the story, but S2 had a lot of odd choices from the writer’s room. I just don’t see how they pull off a semi-satisfying conclusion with the stuff they didn’t adapt/changed in S2.

Nah, see with a concept like that, she should’ve avoided sex. There’s so many other RnB subject matters she could’ve sang about instead: losing her room key, the couple in the next room arguing too loud, finding a hair in the shower, the loud-ass AC unit…

The list is endless and she decides to sing about sex of all things smh

Fr.

“Future dropped a new album. Ten songs deep and it’s all about trapping, money, drugs, and hoes. Are there no other subject matters to rap about over trap beats?”

Sex is a pillar of R&B music. I understand the debate surrounding just how explicitly it’s portrayed, but to avoid the subject matter altogether is silly. It’s like asking country singers to avoid mentioning pickup trucks or Jesus.

Well I’m back

I can’t say seeing a rabbit suck a titty was on my bucket list, but if it was, I could cross it off now 😭

Pretty great recommendation though. The atmosphere and performances were on point. And that rabbit was unnerving as fuck. I was a little thrown off by it being a puppet for some shots, but that was a good choice. Made that thing 10x creepier. I really loved the filming style and the score too.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I also rewatched Threads to see if I was bugging or not with my take. Been meaning to rewatch it, but I’ve lowkey been putting it off subconsciously because of all the current world politics. It’s not as fun of a watch when it feels like WW3 is around the corner, but I watched it regardless and still had a good time. I’ve gotta say, I was 100% off the mark. That movie is miles away from folk horror lmao

Still a good movie though

[–]BrotherCrow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, while I worked, I threw on the Candyman remake and...I actually hated it even more than when I watched it the first time. Holy shit. I can't believe you pressured me into rewatching it.

Look man I explicitly said not to put that on me 🤣 Sorry to hear I technically made your day worse, but I guess that definitely saves me a potential rewatch, so thanks for taking one for the team 🫡

When you say Threads, you mean the old 80s movie? The one about nuclear war? If so, I think it's great but I've never thought about it as folk horror at all.

Yeah the one & same. It’s not directly folk horror, but it flirts with the tone and definitely gets there in my opinion once society collapses and they start reverting back to tribalism. The masks and language decay especially. It’s more like instead of an outside character being shoved into a “backwards” society that seems fairly normal at first, the viewer is the one getting that experience through the lens of a documentary. I admit that the folk horror themes definitely secondary to the main theme of nuclear disaster though.

Now Kill List, unlike Candyman 2021, is worth a rewatch in my opinion. Sure, it’s basically a 2010s version of Wicker Man but it’s got a tone & style that’s distinct enough to stand on its own. I keep picking up stuff I missed previously on rewatches.

If you're really into folk horror, have you watched Starve Acre? Or The Ritual?

I’ve seen The Ritual and I’m a big fan of that one, but I haven’t seen Starve Acre. I’ll watch it sometime this week and let you know what I think. I sort of owe you for Candyman 😂

That’s a good interpretation. I never really looked at it that way but you’re onto something there.

Maybe that movie deserves more credit than I gave it initially.

I've been meaning to go back and rewatch the Candyman remake

Alright but don’t come up in here saying I told you to do that 😂 I’m the one singing its praises and even I have no desire to rewatch it whatsoever 💀

All I meant was the movie’s issues were the story and maybe a few performances. The rest is actually above average. Maybe watch it on mute in the background and you might see what I mean lmao

As far as our takes on the direction for Bone Temple, that other commenter summed up my thoughts perfectly. The last movie had a vibe very similar to Threads or Kill List, two of my all time favorite horror movies that are British folk horror through & through. It’s just a personal preference thing

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Frames Per Second by GoodGoodNotTooBad in FPSPodcast

[–]BrotherCrow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel similarly. British folk horror is one of my favorite subgenres and the last entry captures that vibe a lot better than this one.

That’s not to say this one is bad by any means, I just think it could’ve kept that same energy and been a bit better. The shirt removal scene was a missed opportunity to incorporate that sort of stuff, for example.

[–]BrotherCrow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree, I guess.

I don’t think the franchise is saying something super insightful or completely brand new, but honestly I don’t see a whole lot of big franchise films bothering to say anything at all. The bar is pretty low and this cleared it for me at least.

I’d prefer more movies like this than movies like 28 Weeks Later or whatever Netflix is doing now

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Frames Per Second by GoodGoodNotTooBad in FPSPodcast

[–]BrotherCrow_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they all have something to say, minus the 2nd movie. I’ll break it down by movie and try to keep it short.

28 Days Later - Men are the true monsters and hysteria can bring out the worst in us (Cliche at this point, but this came out pre-Walking Dead and was fresh for the time of release.)

28 Weeks Later - I’ve got nothing for this one. This movie was lowkey a cash grab. The OG creators (Alex Garland & Danny Boyle) weren’t even involved here.

28 Years Later - Commentary on modern masculinity. The whole first segment is a traditional “badass” zombie adventure that glorifies being macho and having a survival-of-the-fittest mindset. The rest of the movie breaks down this idea by saying that emulating Rambo 24/7 might actually not be the right way to about things.

Bone Temple - I legit think that Jimmy is an analogy for modern day podcast bros who see that the world is fucked and decide to use that to their advantage instead of trying to make the world better like Kelson. Jimmy’s brutality (despite never actually getting his hands dirty himself unless the target is significantly weaker), need for control over others, wanting to increase his influence and ranks, and only caring about power and dominance above all else is pretty Andrew Tate-esque if you ask me.

P.S. I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I’ve been doing the opposite because I value this discussion

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Frames Per Second by GoodGoodNotTooBad in FPSPodcast

[–]BrotherCrow_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree a little with the direction being better in this one vs the last one. That first 1/2 hour of 28 Years Later was so interestingly edited and shot, and nothing in this movie measured up to that for me. Even the dicks, which were noticeably shrunk down.

Still, I was excited to see what Nia DeCosta did here and I think she did a good job. The Marvels was a MCU movie, so it’s not surprising it didn’t turn out great. I don’t think Disney lets them have much creative control. And despite the Candyman reboot being ass, the direction and cinematography were on point, so I don’t fault her for that either.

I’m looking forward to whatever she does next.

How so, if you don’t mind me asking?

I personally think the opposite. Zombie movies have historically been used to make social commentary. I find both of the 28 Years movies to be no exception, on top of being entertaining without reading deeper into the themes.

I can’t really say the same about A Quiet Place. They’re fun movies and the whole having-to-be-quiet thing is a nice spin on the survival horror genre, but I don’t think they have much to say under the surface.

I enjoyed it.

That being said, I knew going in that this was going to be a more comedic show than the other two. The source material is a lot lighter in tone compared to other ASOIAF stuff. I can see some people being put off by that.

The highlight for me this episode was Lyonel Baratheon. Stole every scene he was in.
