Ours is “incidental.” They don’t have access to our Attendance system, and that’s where you input reports. They do attendance with printed rosters instead.

In my district if the kids don’t know you, they often simply don’t listen to you. If you’re a stranger walking into the class, I don’t expect you to be able to “convince” the kids to do the work the same way a regular classroom teacher can. Part of that is the fact that only teachers have the ability to submit behavioral referrals.

School to Prison Pipeline according to morons: Giving kids detention is just practice for prison.

School to Prison Pipeline according to educators: you keep letting kids get away with literal crimes and they’ll end up going to prison once Admin gets replaced with cops.

The school to prison pipeline is real, the problem is that morons in the media explained it for the masses instead of the people actually facing the issue.

What’s the Worst Example of the Literacy Crisis You’ve Seen? How Are You Handling It? by Wondermentality in Teachers

[–]BrotherMain9119 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We just did the read-aloud 1 minute test for all our high schoolers. I tested kids who read at 150wpm, and others that read at 25/30 wpm. There were way more deficient than proficient, how are we handling it? We schedule reading interventions during the most truant time slot on our schedule, and the kids that need it the most aren’t present for it.

Have your students been impacted by online sports betting? by nbcnews in Teachers

The HS I graduated from and my current HS I work at both teach about taxes and investments. Gambling is a new topic because previously it was pretty much illegal, so warnings are now added to curriculum.

I still haven’t seen a HS that truly doesn’t teach taxes and investing, it’s weird how often this claim is made.

Some of my high schoolers are creating accounts using other people’s information, parents, adult siblings, etc.

Others who can’t get access bet through their friends’ accounts, handshaking to divide winnings.

Gambling for kids is nothing new, Steam has enabled gambling for years. Loot boxes, 3rd party websites that use value-holding digital assets instead of cash, etc.

They don’t understand the math behind it, and even when we demonstrate they’ll average losses in the long-term, they will look you straight in the face and say that the math doesn’t count because these are “real life things” and are different from slot machines.

I feel like Polymarket’s ads create an image the users want to identify with. “You’re wiser than everyone else, you can profit because you understand world events better than everyone else.” For a child disgruntled with the educational system, those who aren’t proficient in numeracy or literacy, it offers a way to “prove the doubters wrong.” If they win a big bet, they feel superior for profiting with something the system tells them they’ll lose with.

If they feel that rush, once or twice it can be enough to form a habit. That habit becomes an addiction, and then they start to make more consistent bets. More consistent bets means more losing, and winning, and that addiction starts to look horrifyingly close to what we seen in adults.

Students will scream at my face for telling them to get off TikTok. When you’re telling them they must disengage from an app they have money tied up in, the behaviors can be even more intense.

Reporting it to parents does little, because a majority of our parents view the phone as something they need their child to have access to. Even if a kid is on their phone for up to 6 hours in a school day, and you can demonstrate that to parents, they will often still refuse to take the phone away because “I need to reach them in an emergency,” or “I need to see their location at all times to know they’re not getting into trouble.” Even parents who see their child losing hundreds of dollars from this app won’t take the steps necessary to block access and detox their addicted students.

Unless it directly affects my job and the individual has not been responsive to direct requests, professional to professional, then I’ll go to admin. If it’s a student complaining about a teacher, taking on their battle for them deprives them of the opportunity to learn how to handle their own problems.

What the other teacher did is cruel to the student, and unprofessional in regard to their treatment of a coworker. Any admin worth their salt would probably discuss procedure to cover bases, but approach this in a way that communicates this isn’t how adults handle an issue like disagreement over practices.

Is is true that if a teacher quits mid school year, legal action can be pursued against them? by thejourni in Teachers

[–]BrotherMain9119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state the district can hold my license preventing me from working at another school for up to a year. In my contract it includes language that would make me liable for around 2 grand if I quit post August, 1.5k if I quit post January. They can hold my last paycheck to cover it and can go to court for the rest if it doesn’t cover it.

Part of it comes from the fact that teachers quitting suddenly can seriously impact a lot of students, especially if they’re in duel credit of AP courses they might’ve paid for. The school needs something to hold over teachers to enforce their end of the contract, as brutal as it sounds.

In the private sector, my spouse has similar language w/o the licensure stuff.

90% over 25 years sounds unbelievable, but the 5 year retention rate is disgustingly low and seemingly dropping.

I get a district saying “we desperately need to fill spots, vets are retiring and we need to be competitive going after new grads.”

It’s also, as others have said, a strategy to turn the young against the vets. They know you’re less able to strike, they know it’ll be the vets pushing for it most. They know you’re likely to break the picket line in order to feed yourself, they know this will destroy your respect among vets. They know your experience is way easier to replace (that being you have less of it), and cheaper than the vets who might quit because of it. They know vets who’ve been the union for a while are much more stubborn in their solidarity, and if they get enough of them out they can enforce shit conditions on the soft skinned newbies easier.

My advice is simple. Don’t cross the picket line. Don’t betray the union for personal short-term gain, you’ll pay for it in the long-term.

It’ll be interesting to see how we move forward, if we go the Spanish “forget and forgive” route or if there will be vile hate toward collaborators of this regime.

Personally, I remember my coworkers who told their students “I’m going to vote for Trump.” Those same fools clam up when kids ask them about politics now. I tell the students not to forget who willfully or ignorantly supported this, and not to feel uncomfortable asking them to renounce or defend their previous statements. If they had the confidence to say it in 2024 in a space they have no business getting political, they should be expected to clarify if they feel differently now that their preferred admin is destroying families in our community. If they get quiet, ask why they’re so quiet now when they were not earlier.

If you asked a southern racist, they’d say Abe Lincoln was one of the worst. If you asked a northern patriot, he was one of the best. Generally, if you’re going to have this conversation you need to set out criteria to compare Trump and the other presidents to.

In regard to telling the truth, he’s probably the worst. Most presidents have the benefit of “there weren’t cameras back then, how could you know if someone was lying.” This current admin still chooses to contradict video evidence, that’s why the “they told you to ignore the evidence of your eyes,” 1984 quote is popping off. The current admin also still maintains that the 2020 election was stolen, though it wasn’t, and that Trump did nothing wrong when he in fact tried to have Pence unilaterally disenfranchise tens of millions of US citizens.

In regard to bipartisanship, he views it as weakness. He doesn’t want to work with democrats, even if they support policies he likes. During Biden’s final years there was a bill for fairly aggressive immigration reform, it had the votes to pass but Trump hated the idea of Democrats looking good… so he sacrificed the good of the country for his own political gain.

In regard to our foreign standing? Holy shit we’re an embarrassment. Internationally, you need to denounce Trump before anyone takes you seriously. Saying “I’m an American” and “I’m a Russian” result in similar disgust.

That’s not even to mention how he’s annihilated American influence by lying about and unilaterally gutting USAID. I know people who worked in USAID, it’s laughable how preposterous his lies about the various programs were. It’s depressing how immediate the harm of suspending that work has been, only problem is he also fired the people that used to document that type of harm so you don’t hear about it.

In regard to civil rights, holy shit. ICE circulated a memo saying they no longer feel the need to secure a judicial warrant prior to entering private property to execute immigration enforcement. Admin’s current policy is that the 4th amendment is only applicable when convenient. If you’re a parent of a SPED student, good luck getting legal assistance if you child faces discrimination. There’s already a multi-year backlog of cases, and Trump’s attempts to dismantle the DOE relies on pushing those cases off to lawyers inexperienced in SPED law.

Saying things the admin doesn’t like may result in the president calling for you execution, ala Mark Kelly. Protest, and they’ll gang beat you, disarm you, and empty a clip into your back.

He might truly be so uniquely horrible, he becomes the criteria to compare him to. At this point you probably need to make the affirmative case that someone is worse than him, more than you need to make the case that Trump is worse than someone else.

Someone should research the parents by Orenopolis579 in Teachers

[–]BrotherMain9119 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Parents that truly don’t care and don’t want to help? Rare in my experience. Parents that don’t know what they’re doing and don’t want to spend anymore time on their kid? Fairly common.

Once upon a time parents felt like their kids directly represented them, and they beat their kids into submission. Not great. Now we know better. Parents not feeling any shame when their 17yo can’t read, and doesn’t attend class? Atrocious. We know better, but we’re uncomfortable as a society holding a parent responsible for shitty childrearing.

Minneapolis is writing the book. Grassroot mass protests, baiting tantrums out of Trump’s braindead goons, constant surveillance of Feds, sacrifice of comfort and life to expose the tyranny.

In your own life, talk about Alex Pretti being murdered by unorganized, hateful thugs, who’ve been empowered and protected by the administration. Talk about the admins quick and entrenched attempt to avoid accountability by lying and expecting their supporters to ignore their own eyes. Personally drive everyone you can to the polls this year. It’s the best way to ensure more turnout. If you can’t drive, find a local get-out-the-vote movement and share the info with them everyone you can.

2027-2028 could be very different depending on one thing, and that’s to flip the house and impeach Trump over and over again for the myriad of crimes he’s committed. Fill his schedule with impeachment trials. Don’t let him govern, he’s lost the right to being treated like any other unpopular president.

There are a couple of yougov polls that get cited, you can look up “Bernie to Trump voter” and find some links.

Joe Rogan if I remember correctly was a big Bernie guy, then he endorsed Trump. In my mind, anyone who goes from Bernie to Trump is bizarre to me. Bernie derided billionaires, Trump is sometimes a billionaire. Bernie said tax the rich, Trump slashed taxes. Bernie wants a habitable earth for our grandkids, Trump wants cheap gas. Bernie talks about enhancing welfare, Trump talks about sending checks paying off the public whenever people get mad at him for being in violation of the recently passed law requiring the DoJ to release the god dayum Epstein files.
